Slain sheriff's deputy honored with memorial sign
Nineteen years after an off-duty sheriff's deputy was slain, family, friends and colleagues gathered Wednesday in Castaic to dedicate a memorial highway sign in his honor. On Aug. 14, 1997, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Shayne Daniel York was fatally shot by armed robbers while visiting a Buena Park hair salon with his fiancée, according to authorities.

Witness Saw 14-Year-Old Boy Fire Gun Before He Was Fatally Shot by Officer: LAPD
A witness told investigators that a 14-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police in Boyle Heights on Tuesday had fired at officers first, a deputy chief for the Los Angeles Police Department said during a news conference Wednesday. The teen, identified by the coroner's office Wednesday as Jesse James Romero, was one of two people police attempted to approach while responding to a vandalism call near the intersection of North Chicago Street and East Cesar Chavez Avenue at about 5:35 p.m., said LAPD Deputy Chief Robert Arcos.

Hollywood students ‘Shop With a Cop' for school
Twenty-five students from Hollywood-area campuses got to “Shop With a Cop” for school supplies on Aug. 4 and Aug. 8 to prepare them for the upcoming academic year.  The program was made possible by Capt. Cory Palka, commanding officer of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Division, and his friend, Dave Anderson, an expert in leadership training who donated $2,500 for school supplies.

Stabbing suspect prompts SWAT response in South LA
A man suspected of stabbing another man barricaded himself inside a South Los Angeles house Wednesday, prompting a SWAT team response. Police were called at 2:21 p.m. to the 100 block of 109th Place to investigate an assault with a deadly weapon and found the victim, who was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury, according to Officer Aareon Jefferson of the Los Angeles Police Department‘s Media Relations Section.

Police searching for 'dangerous fugitive' accused of stabbing woman; tried to gouge out a man's eyes
Police were searching Wednesday for a Los Angeles man accused of stabbing a woman and attempting to gouge out a man's eyes who fled a courthouse and cut off a monitoring bracelet. An arrest warrant was issued for Abel Munguia, 19, whom police called a "dangerous fugitive," after his electronic monitoring ankle device was recovered in Carson.

L.A. settles suit with police sergeant who alleged retaliation for speaking up about racism
Los Angeles will pay $500,000 to settle a lawsuit by a police sergeant who alleged that he suffered retaliation after speaking up about racism in the Los Angeles Police Department.  Guillary said he later spoke up in front of the Police Commission about “ghost cars” — police logging into the computers on their squad cars to falsely make it appear they were on patrol.

Search Continues For Attempted Kidnapper In Glendale
Detectives Thursday searched for a would-be kidnapper who targeted two young  children  in Glendale. The first incident took place shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, at the intersection of Chevy Chase Drive and Adams Street, when a suspect attempted to snatch a stroller carrying an infant  child  from it's mother.

Whittier Man, Woman Arrested at Mexico Border With Body of 2-Year-Old Girl in Duffel Bag: San Diego Police A man and a woman from Whittier were arrested on suspicion of murder after attempting to enter Mexico on foot with the body of a 2-year-old girl inside a duffel bag, San Diego police said Wednesday.  When they were stopped, Becerra allegedly fled, and Hartley was taken into custody with a duffel bag. “An X-ray of the duffle bag revealed a body inside,” the police news release stated. A 2-year-old deceased child was in the bag, police said.

San Bernardino shooter's insurance payout seized
The $275,000 in life insurance policies taken out by San Bernardino terrorist Syed Rizwan Farook naming his mother as beneficiary are subject to government seizure, a federal judge has ruled. Instead of going to Rafia Farook, the money has been deposited with the court clerk, where it will be held until further orders.

‘Pillowcase Rapist' suspected of violating release terms at Palmdale home
A Palmdale man who confessed to raping 40?women from Southern to Northern California violated terms of his supervised release, officials said Wednesday. Christopher Hubbart, 65, was arrested a day earlier after failing to comply with the terms of his living arrangement at a home in Palmdale where the state contracted with Liberty Healthcare, a company that supervises release programs.

Convicted Serial Killer 'Grim Sleeper' Formally Sentenced To Death
Convicted serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr., known as the "Grim Sleeper," was formally sentenced to death for the murders of nine women and a teenage girl over two decades in South Los Angeles. In June, a jury recommended execution rather than life in prison. On Wednesday, Judge Kathleen Kennedy agreed with the jury's recommendation and declined the defense's request for a new trial.

Man Buys Gun on Facebook, Despite Social Network's Gun Sale Ban
Shortly after the San Bernardino terrorist attack, Facebook banned private gun sales on its site -- a policy one California man decided to test, with surprising results. Buzzfeed news journalist Alex Kantrowitz bought his new AR-15 variant from a private seller on Facebook just to find out if he could. The social media giant announced their ban on gun sales in January off the heels of several mass shootings.

Protesters march in downtown Dallas despite chief's request
A small group of demonstrators took to the streets in downtown Dallas on Wednesday night to protest police use of force against black people, despite the police chief's request that they stay away out of concern for officers' safety. Police Chief David Brown told the organizer of the demonstration that holding such events downtown poses a tactical threat to officers. The group behind Wednesday's protest was the same one that planned the July 7 protest and march that ended in the sniper shooting deaths of five law enforcement officers.

Intense Fire Burns Homes in Pico-Union District
Several people had to climb out of windows to escape an intense fire that burned homes west of downtown Los Angeles Wednesday, fire officials said. The fire broke out in a three-story home at 4:48 p.m. in the 1240 block of S. Bonnie Brae St. in the Pico-Union District, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The fire had spread to two neighboring homes.

The money is starting to roll in on California's 17 ballot propositions. A lot of it
Political professionals who run California ballot measure campaigns always worry about how to get the attention of voters. And it all starts with a lot of money. Through early August, almost $200 million has been collected for campaigns to support or oppose propositions on the Nov. 8 statewide ballot. That hews to what campaign consultants have been predicting for months, with voters facing 17 measures — the most on any single ballot in California since March 2000.
