LAPPL Board of Directors meet with L.A. Mayoral Candidate Mitchell Schwartz
Today, the Los Angeles Police Protective League Board of Directors met with Mayoral Candidate Mitchell Schwartz to listen to his ideas about reducing crime, increasing the number of police officers patrolling our streets and improving our city. The League Directors also shared with Mitchell examples of the chronic understaffing faced by our patrol divisions. They strongly urged him to support the utilization of overtime to put in place a baseline patrol staffing model to help keep our city safe.

Father Of 3 Fatally Shot In Apparent Road-Rage Attack In Panorama City
A 24-year-old father of three was fatally shot in what authorities believe was a road-rage attack on the same block where his family lives in Panorama City. The victim, later identified by the coroner as 24-year-old Jesus Alejandro Benitez-Jaimez of Panorama City, was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends and family say he has three young children - two of whom live in an apartment complex just feet away from where the shooting happened.

A male was shot to death Monday morning in Sylmar, authorities said.
The shooting was reported at 3:20 a.m. at Ralston Avenue and Astoria Street, said Officer Aareon Jefferson of Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations. A news videographer reported from the scene that the deceased male was the driver of a car that crashed into parked cars and that a wounded victim was found at the end of a bloody trail on Bradley Avenue near Oro Grande Street.

2 Men In Custody After Openly Carrying Rifles In Inglewood Protest, Police Say
Two men were taken into custody by police in Lake View Terrace on Tuesday morning, authorities said, hours after they openly carried rifles while walking around Inglewood in what the pair described as a "peaceful protest." The Los Angeles Police Department began tracking the pair after they left Inglewood and headed northbound on the 405 Freeway into the San Fernando Valley.

Warm memories and war stories traded at 50 year LAPD class reunion
"See these guys?" retired officer Larry Manchester gestures around a reception hall at the Hyatt Recency in Huntington Beach, CA. "Manson? The Weather Underground? The Watts Riots? These guys were there." Manchester is referring to the few dozen cops, all in their 70s, fraternizing gregariously on the 50th anniversary of their graduation from the LA Police Academy. Their service spanned some of the most iconic events in LA history.

LAPD Continues Investigation Into Fatal Attack on Taxi Driver at Hollywood Hills Gas Station
As friends mourned Asfawosen Alemsegen Monday, Los Angeles police continued to look for a passenger who fatally attacked the taxi driver. Alemsegen died after the altercation occurred early Sunday at a 76 in Hollywood Hills. Steve Kuzj reports for the KTLA 5 News at 1 on Aug. 15, 2016.

City shuts down illegal San Pedro medical marijuana shop
Authorities shut down an illegal medical marijuana shop in San Pedro on Monday, the latest in a series of closures prompted by the enforcement of a measure approved by voters in 2013 to limit the proliferation of such operations. The storefront in the 600 block of West Seventh Street — next door to a gourmet hamburger cafe — was one of several that have opened and operated throughout Los Angeles without state permits.

Alleged Stalker Posts Videos Of Him Picking Up Women In Downtown L.A., Sparking Outrage
A self-proclaimed pickup artist who roams the streets of downtown Los Angeles has many people on alert. One of the videos Dan Cilley posted on YouTube shows him aggressively approaching women saying things like “Can I get an image of your butt? Are you 18 years old? Sorry if I creeped you out or anything. I don't want to touch you or do you want to touch me?”

Fans Brawl in Stands at Rams' Preseason Game
Fists flew when a fight broke out among fans at the Los Angeles Rams' preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday. NBC4 viewer Carl Hankins recorded cellphone video showing fisticuffs in the stands at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Some of the fans were wearing Rams apparel, while others wore Cowboys gear. More than 78,000 people attended the game, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Three arrests were made and seven people were ejected from the stadium. It's not clear if those were connected to the fight.

Authorities Find Inmate Who Walked Away From Halfway House in South L.A.
An inmate who walked away from the Los Angeles County Male Community Re-entry Program facility, or halfway house, in South Los Angeles was located and taken back into custody, authorities announced Monday. Sarkis Akopyan, 33, left the re-entry facility at South Grand Avenue and removed his GPS tracking device around 10 p.m. Friday. He was apprehended at 8:05 p.m. on Saturday in Glendale by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Special Service Unit and transported to the California Institution for Men in Chino without incident.

Prosecutor Accuses ‘Hollywood Arsonist' Of Wanting ‘America To Burn'
A German national accused of setting dozens of fires in Hollywood, West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley “wanted America to burn,” a prosecutor told jurors Monday. “He was angry with America because his mother had been arrested and was in custody of the United States, being held for extradition to Germany,” Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney said during opening statements.

LA County deputies to limit use of restraints on inmates after Twin Towers death
Sheriff's deputies who serve in Los?Angeles County's jails will use new procedures when restraining inmates after several prisoners were tethered to tables or doors for long periods of time without care or supervision, resulting in one man's death. A report completed in June but made public Friday listed a set of new policies to guide deputies and their supervisors when restraints are necessary. The report, released by the Los?Angeles County's Office of Inspector?General, found that while deputies and their supervisors were wrong in their methods, vague policies also misguided them.

Californians on pace to buy 1 million guns in 2016
Californians are on track to buy nearly a million guns in 2016, a huge jump from previous years. The soaring gun sale totals — which show 554,203 firearms sales through late July — come in the wake of mass shootings in Orlando and Dallas, followed by calls for gun control legislation. KPCC obtained the new data from the California Department of Justice's gun tracking system, the Dealer Record of Sales (DROS). The system shows gun sales on track to surpass 2015 nearly everywhere in the state.

California Lawmakers Move to Limit Seizures by Police
California lawmakers took a major step toward reining in a controversial practice that has allowed law enforcement agencies to keep cash and other property seized during traffic stops — even if the owner was never convicted of a crime. On a bipartisan 66-8 vote, the state Assembly passed Senate Bill 443 Monday, nearly a year after the same house soundly defeated the measure. The difference? This year, powerful law enforcement groups that lobbied hard in 2015 to kill SB 443 stayed neutral after intense negotiations and some significant changes.

DEA warns of Fentanyl's 'unprecedented threat' to cops, K-9s
Fentanyl, the powerful painkiller more than 50 times stronger than heroin, has become so prevalent that the Drug Enforcement Administration is warning police and first-responders not to touch or field-test drugs they suspect contain it. Calling fentanyl an "unprecedented threat," the DEA released a video to all law enforcement agencies nationwide about the dangers of improperly handling the drug and its deadly consequences -- especially to drug-sniffing police dogs.

Whatever happened to that plan for a bridge connecting Griffith Park and Atwater Village?
After years of delays and escalating costs, the city of Los Angeles has moved to take over planning and construction of a pedestrian, equestrian and bicycle bridge over the L.A. River that would connect Griffith Park and Atwater Village. City leaders originally called for a $5-million bridge but now estimate the total cost of construction and maintenance at about $13 million.

Metro subway project through Beverly Hills can continue, judge rules
During more than three decades of discussion and planning, Los Angeles County transportation officials have cleared almost every obstacle to the long-planned Wilshire subway. The main exception has been Beverly Hills. Over the last five years, the city and the local school district have spent nearly $10 million fighting the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's plans to tunnel beneath Beverly Hills High School for a nine-mile heavy rail link between Westwood and Koreatown, where the subway line currently terminates.

Metro Celebrates Opening Of Pedestrian Tunnel In North Hollywood
Los Angeles County transportation officials were hosting a grand opening on Monday for a new pedestrian tunnel in North Hollywood. The tunnel will make it easier for passengers to connect between the Metro Orange and Red lines. It will join the mezzanine of the Red Line station with the plaza of the Metro Orange Line station.

LA Rams Fans Face Outrageous Parking Prices at Preseason Game
Some Los Angeles Rams fans were shocked by parking prices around the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Saturday, facing prices as high as $100 to park for the game. Although most Angelenos are used to heightened parking prices for concerts or events, Rams fans took to social media to document how some parking lot operators were charging $50, $80, and even a $100 flat rate fee to park in the area.
