LAPD Motorcycle Officer ‘Intentionally' Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver on 5 Fwy Near Castaic: CHP
An LAPD motorcycle officer was “intentionally” struck by a hit-and-run pickup truck driver on the 5 Freeway near Castaic, leaving the police officer hospitalized and a search for the motorist ongoing Wednesday, investigators said. He was in uniform and presumed to be on his way to work, CHP Officer Joshua Greengard said. The motor officer complained of pain but was expected to be OK. Investigators believe the hit-and-run driver pushed the officer for some time at “freeway speeds." “It was not an accident,” Greengard told the Times. “It was an intentional act.”

Why the Rams' Return to L.A. Could Mean a Spike in Sex Trafficking
As the NFL team prepares to kick off its season at the Coliseum, the LAPD and FBI gear up for a potential grim consequence — a jump in an illicit sex market involving the underaged and abused. With the Los Angeles Rams set to kick off their season at the Coliseum on Sept. 14, and the Super Bowl to take place in the team's new stadium in 2021, officials are concerned L.A.'s trafficking problem could get worse. ORS was scheduled for the days leading up to the Rams' first preseason game on Aug. 12, in part to establish a baseline for monitoring activity throughout the season, according to LAPD human trafficking unit detective Lina Teague. "It's just the beginning of the football season," says Teague, "We're preparing for an uptick in trafficking based on the season starting, and we're looking for that nexus."

Police Search For Shooter After Pursuit Ends In Eagle Rock
Police Thursday searched for a shooting suspect who bailed from his vehicle after leading officers on a pursuit through Los Angeles. The chase ended on Yosemite Boulevard across the street from Eagle Rock High School , Los Angeles police said. A preliminary investigation revealed officers responded to a home located near Broadway and Daly for report of a shooting.

Man killed in possible gang-related shooting in San Pedro
A 28-year-old man was killed early Wednesday morning in a possibly gang-related shooting in San Pedro, police said. Officers found the wounded victim after being dispatched about 2:25 a.m. to investigate a report of shots heard in the 300 block of West Third Street, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. The man died at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.

LAPD arrest man wanted in connection with multiple LA assaults
The LAPD have arrested a man wanted in a series of burglaries and rapes in the Echo Park, East Hollywood, and Silver Lake areas. On August first he was spotted walking into the open door of an apartment on Mariposa. He knocked a woman to the ground but her screams scared him off. 90 minutes later and a few miles away he was caught on security cam again in another complex. This time he was assaulting a woman when her dog attacked him and he fled.

San Pedro pot shop raided by LAPD back in business a day later
An illegal medical marijuana dispensary in San Pedro reopened this week a day after Los Angeles police officers raided the shop, confiscating its merchandise and making several arrests. The dispensary in the 600 block of West Seventh Street was one of several operating throughout Los Angeles without state permits under Proposition D, approved by voters in 2013 and designed to limit the proliferation of such operations. Police made the arrests on Monday and confiscated 5 pounds of narcotics, but the shop was back in business Tuesday, said Sgt. Catherine Plows of the LAPD's Harbor Division.

Pico Rivera Teen Charged In Killing Of 16-Year-Old Ex-Girlfriend
A 17-year-old from Pico Rivera has been charged with the fatal stabbing of his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend at her home, officials said Wednesday. Rory Murga has been charged as an adult with one count of murder. He is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend, Elena Lillian Moore, at her Pico Rivera home about two weeks after she ended their one-year relationship.

Mistrial Declared In Case Against Man Accused Of Hiring Hitman To Kill Pregnant Girlfriend
A mistrial was declared Wednesday in the case of a man accused of hiring a gang member to fatally shoot his girlfriend after she refused to have an abortion. The 12 jurors told the judge they were hopelessly deadlocked, with the foreperson reporting the split at 6-6. During the course of the trial, three jurors were replaced on two separate occasions. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Coen noted the panel had been considering the case against Derek Paul Smyer since Aug. 2.

L.A. lawsuit seeks to allow guns to be carried openly
Gun owners filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Wednesday challenging state and county restrictions on carrying firearms for self-defense in public. The National Rifle Association-supported lawsuit names state Attorney General Kamala Harris and Los Angeles County Sheriff James McDonnell as defendants because, the plaintiffs claim, their policies prohibit residents from exercising their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Social media threats toward Milwaukee officer intensify
A Milwaukee police officer has been targeted by online threats from people who say he fatally shot the black man whose death has sparked violence in the city. Police haven't released the name of the officer who shot Sylville Smith on Saturday, but widely shared social media posts and at least one news report Tuesday identified him as a 24-year-old patrolman — matching the age and departmental experience that police released. Many posts contained threats against him and a photo.

Labor groups cry foul at Airbnb's agreement to pay hotel taxes
A wide-ranging coalition representing hotels, labor, affordable housing activists and others urged city leaders to back off from an agreement in which Airbnb has agreed to pay hotel taxes on behalf of its short-term rental hosts. The groups say collecting taxes from an industry not regulated by the city sends a mixed message, and urged Mayor Eric Garcetti in a letter Monday to delay the tax collection agreement, which was reached in July and officially began Aug. 1, until after an ordinance has been adopted.

LA City Council panel backs plan to protect renters from unscrupulous landlords
When Los?Angeles landlords seek to remove tenants from rent-controlled properties, they're required by law to compensate their renters. But in a heated housing market, some landlords simply offer a sum of cash to get the renter out. The practice is called “cash for keys,” and is sometimes unethical because tenants don't get the full amount afforded to them under the law and mistakenly think they're getting a deal.

Measure to halt large developments in L.A. could be withdrawn
Proponents of a proposed ballot measure that would temporarily halt some large developments in the city of Los Angeles said Wednesday they are willing to withdraw their initiative if Mayor Eric Garcetti agrees to an alternate plan. Jill Stewart, the campaign director for the ballot initiative, said the coalition plans to submit its petition next week unless Garcetti agrees to the group's terms. “You said that you want to fix the broken system in City Hall, yet you have done nothing of note to achieve that goal, and time is running out,” initiative backers wrote in a letter to Garcetti.

Mayor Eric Garcetti On LA Becoming Host City For 2024 Olympics: 'I Like Our Chances'
Earlier this month, Mayor Eric Garcetti and officials traveled to the 2016 Summer Games' host city, Rio de Janeiro, to promote Los Angeles' bid for the 2024 Games. After spending time with the International Olympic Committee and pitching LA as the host city, the IOC confirmed Thursday that Mayor Garcetti and his team will proceed to the second stage of bidding. The IOC also expressed interest in bids from Paris, Rome, and Budapest, but Mayor Garcetti says California and all its resources will take the 2024 Games to a whole new level.
