The Cost of Workers' Comp
If you get injured on the job in California, you are promised a paycheck through the state workers' compensation system, with quick and efficient medical care so you can get back to work. But as the NBC4 I-Team discovered, many police officers say they are being betrayed by the system, costing taxpayers millions, decreasing the public's safety and causing unnecessary suffering. The police union is trying to convince the city to adopt an alternative dispute resolution process that would bypass the state system. Other cities have cut the time to resolve disputes by more than 100 percent with the system.

DOJ private prison phase-out doesn't affect immigrant detention, but a California bill could
An announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice this week that it will phase out its use of private prisons for inmates doesn't affect immigration detainees -- and immigration officials said Thursday that they don't plan to stop using private contractors. But a state bill that's up for an Assembly vote next week could put a wrench in some private detention contracts in California. KPCC 89.3 FM
Sacramento debating felony status for prosecutorial misconduct
California lawmakers are getting closer to passing a bill that would throw the book at prosecutors who withhold evidence in criminal trials. Rent increase sparks anger at Los Angeles city-owned senior building
A 6 percent rental hike is planned this year at Reflections on Yosemite, a 100-unit city-owned Eagle Rock senior building where the De Navas have lived for decades. The couple are part of a group of residents fighting the city over the rent hike, which they say could put people on the street. The rent increase is double what the city has charged in some past years, confirmed Tina Smith-Booth, a director at Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles. The city needs to keep with market rents in this eastside neighborhood, she said.
