California crime measure triggers 52,000 fewer arrests
A 2014 California voter-approved initiative that reduced penalties for certain drug and property crimes has led to the lowest arrest rate in state history as police frequently ignore those illegal activities, experts say. Proposition 47 lowered criminal sentences by reducing them from felonies that can bring long prison sentences to misdemeanors that instead bring up to a year in jail. Recent state Department of Justice statistics show the number of felony arrests plummeted 28.5 percent last year, while misdemeanor arrests rose about 9 percent over 2014. That resulted in 52,000 fewer arrests overall and the lowest arrest rate since record-keeping began in 1960.

Rapper Kid Cali Gunned Down At ‘Mansion Pool Party' In Granada Hills
A promising young rapper was shot and killed at a pool party in an exclusive part of Granada Hills Saturday night. Kid Cali, 28, was shot and killed in the backyard of a large home on Longacre Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they said a 30-year-old man was found in the backyard of the home suffering from a gunshot wound. An internet flyer advertised it as a “Mansion Pool Party” with professional DJ Kid Red. The flyer said a surprise celebrity guest would be there.

Man Found Not Breathing, Unconscious After Being Shot In Jefferson Park, LAPD Says
A man in his 30s was found shot Friday in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles, authorities said. Officers responded shortly before 6:30 a.m. to a call reporting gunshots heard and a woman screaming in the area of West and Jefferson boulevards, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. An ambulance was also summoned to the scene.

Shootout at Canoga Park strip club leaves 2 suspects dead
Two men who lived near the Xposed Gentlemen's Club were identified Sunday as the purported robbers who were shot dead by security guards in a predawn shootout in the San Fernando Valley Saturday. Marvin Gonzalez, 24, of Winnetka, resident David Hernandez, 23, of Canoga park, were named by the coroner's office. Police had said they were suspected gang members.

Police Search For 4 Suspects In Connection With Sun Valley Home Invasion
A Sun Valley couple was beaten and hog-tied after confronting four men outside their home, authorities said. The suspects may have been trying to jump a wall to burglarize one of two neighboring businesses, said LAPD Sgt. Fred Cueto. The homeowners heard a noise, and went outside to check it out, said Cueto. Two of the suspects forced them back inside the home in the 8700 block of Bradley Street at gunpoint,added Cueto.

Police looking for man who tried to kidnap woman in North Hollywood
The North Hollywood division of the LAPD is looking for a man who they say tried to kidnap a woman in North Hollywood. Police released a sketch of the suspect who they describe as an Hispanic man between 23-26 years old and about five-feet-four inches to five-feet-six inches tall. Authorities say the suspect followed the victim as she drove home on August 11 around 10:30 pm, and approached her with a gun when she parked her car on Ethel Avenue.

LA's Most Wanted: Nelson Medrano and Anthony Valle killed in drive-by shooting
Nelson Medrano, 21-years-old, and his 16-year-old friend, Anthony Valle, were murdered in a drive-by shooting on Saturday, September 10, 2011. They were attending a barbeque at the home of friends near the corner of Juniper and East 97th Streets, across the street from the Jordan Downs Housing Development. Two other young men were wounded during the attack and two very young children narrowly escaped being killed.

Rams say security is 'top priority' after fights erupt at preseason opener
The long-awaited game ended in a victory for the home team, but three people were arrested and seven were ejected from the stands after some tempers flared. Eleven ambulances also were requested, but only one person had to be taken to the hospital, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Police Protective League issued a statement demanding that Stan Kroenke, the billionaire owner of the Rams, pay the full cost for necessary police services to ensure public safety at the team's home games as long as it plays at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Police Suspect Bad Batch of Synthetic Drug Caused Skid Row Illnesses
The use of a synthetic street drug from the same supplier is believed to be the common cause of some two dozen illnesses in the Skid Row section of downtown Los Angeles, police said. The first case of seizure-like symptoms was reported Friday morning, followed quickly by additional cases, and then another spike after noon, when the fire department called LAPD to assist. The wail of rescue ambulance sirens continued to be heard through afternoon and into the evening.

Minor arrested after striking, killing pedestrian in Sherman Oaks
A 17-year-old Canoga?Park resident was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and released to his parents after allegedly striking and killing a 21-year-old pedestrian with his car in Sherman?Oaks Saturday night, Los?Angeles police said. The incident occurred about 9:10?p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Riverside?Drive and Tyrone?Street, said LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman, a spokeswoman.

Calif. officer wounded after exchange of gunfire
Porterville police officer was shot in the hip and a suspect with whom he exchanged fire was struck four times by bullets late Thursday night at a major intersection in the city, police reported. The officer was released from the hospital early Friday and the suspect is in stable condition. Two officers made a traffic stop at Olive Avenue and Jaye Street about 11:15 p.m. A man identified as Ruben Corrales got out of his car and ran east on Olive with his partner in pursuit.

Dallas police leaders planning long-term mental health care for officers
The three Dallas police counselors jumped into "triage" mode in July after a lone gunman opened fire on officers as a protest was ending downtown, killing five and injuring nine others and two civilians. But in the month since the shooting, the trauma response has shifted toward creating a long-term counseling plan for police officers grieving those killed in the downtown ambush.

Hollywood Target, still dormant, remains at the center of furious legal fight
For a fleeting moment, it looked as if the long-stalled, partly built Target shopping center in Hollywood might finally be in the clear. L.A. city lawmakers voted in May to resurrect the project, changing the zoning for the site in response to a judge's decision invalidating the building's permits. At the time, the local councilman said he expected construction work to restart within weeks.

City seeks to examine whether South L.A. oil drilling site has flouted rules
In South Los Angeles, community activists had long complained that the city failed to follow up on neighborhood concerns about foul smells, noise and other nuisances from an oil drilling site. Now Los Angeles is taking a first step toward scrutinizing whether Freeport-McMoRan, the company that runs the Jefferson Boulevard facility, has flouted city conditions imposed on the drilling site.

LA County's Measure M would boost sales tax forever to fund transportation
A Metro county sales tax measure aimed at raising revenue to build, operate and maintain public transportation projects was officially certified by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder today for the Nov. 8 ballot. If approved by at least two-thirds of voters, Measure M would enact a half-cent sales tax hike to fund a package of transportation improvements that include new rail and bus lines, highway improvements and street repairs. The tax revenue would also help fund the operation and maintenance of the regional transportation system.
