Man charged after allegedly ramming LAPD motorcycle officer in Castaic area
A Northern California man accused of deliberately ramming a Los Angeles Police Department motorcycle officer with his truck and then leaving the scene was charged Monday with assault and attempted murder. Philip Newlyn, 28, of Elk Grove, is facing one felony count each of attempted murder of a peace officer and assault of a peace officer, according to the District Attorney's Office.

LAPD probing gang connection to fatal shooting of rapper Kid Cali
Investigators are exploring a gang connection to a house party in Granada?Hills, where rapper Kid Cali was shot and killed, the Los?Angeles Police Department said Monday. “There is definitely some sort of gang connection to this case, but I don't know if Kid Cali was involved, whether it was the party or the participants,” LAPD's Operations-Valley Bureau Homicide Detective Richard Moakley said.

DJ Goonie details events at pool party that ends with Rapper Kid Cali's murder
DJ Goonie was set to play the last two songs of a pool party at a mansion in Granada Hills, Saturday. That's when he heard several gunshots and turned to see the crowd scatter. He left his equipment to calm the crowd and find out if anyone was hurt. He saw his friend Justin Lishey, better known as rapper Kid Cali, down on the ground, with his hands up near his chest, as if he was going to get up and brush himself off.

Knife-Wielding Man Arrested Following Standoff With SWAT In Highland Park
Police Tuesday arrested an armed man who barricaded himself inside of an apartment for several hours in Highland Park. The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. Monday in the area of York Boulevard between Ave 52 and Ave 54, according to police. Neighbors reported the man threatened to kill his stepfather and acted erratically in the street.

Lakewood man accused of Hollywood cabbie murder remains behind bars
A Lakewood man accused in the beating death of a taxi driver and recording artist who was attacked at a Hollywood gas station appeared in court today but did not enter a plea. Najib Halibi is being held without bail while awaiting arraignment in connection with the attack on Asfawosen Alemseged, who had worked for Yellow Cab for 24 years. Speaking today through an interpreter, Halibi agreed to postpone his arraignment to Sept. 6.

2 men fatally shot in Canoga Park strip club identified
Two men shot and killed by an armed security guard in a Canoga?Park strip club early Saturday during what police initially described as a possible robbery attempt have been identified. The two deceased men were identified Sunday as David Hernandez, 23, of Canoga?Park and Marvin Gonzalez, 24, of Winnetka, said Investigator A. Lopez of the Los?Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Synthetic Marijuana Creating ‘Public Health Crisis' in Skid Row: LAFD Medical Director
The use of synthetic marijuana known as “spice” has created a public health crisis among the homeless population in downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row area, the city Fire Department's medical director said after a multipatient emergency response Monday morning. Eighteen people were treated after being called to 429 E. Fifth St. in downtown L.A. about 10:30 a.m., according to an alert from the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Preservationists Aghast After Stained-Glass Windows Disappear From Hollywood Church
Hollywood neighborhood activists were aghast last week to see a familiar fixture along Sunset Boulevard — the stained glass windows of a Gothic Revival church — abruptly disappear. Local preservationists knew the 90-year-old building at Sunset and Alexandria Avenue was being converted into creative offices by a new owner. A push to enshrine the former Bethany Lutheran Church of Hollywood as a historic monument had been rejected months earlier.

Ex-L.A. Coliseum manager, a onetime rising star, to be sentenced in corruption case
Six years ago, Todd DeStefano was an up-and-coming executive for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the storied stadium built to honor the veterans of World War I that has hosted two Summer Olympics. It was a gig that promised glamour — if he and his boss were somehow able to lure the NFL back to Los Angeles. But instead of celebrating the return of the Rams, the disgraced ex-manager, now 43, is scheduled Tuesday to be sentenced to six months in jail after pleading no contest to one felony conflict-of-interest count in what prosecutors have described as a wide-ranging corruption scandal. He has also agreed to pay $500,000 in restitution to the county.

Reversal of death sentence reflects leftward tilt of California Supreme Court
Nearly two years ago, Gary Grimes lost his bid to overturn his death sentence. The vote on the California Supreme Court was close — 4-3 — and the decision was not technically final when the court changed membership. Two new justices, appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown, joined the dissenters to reconsider Grimes' appeals. On Monday, the court overturned Grimes' death sentence on a 4-3 vote, with Brown's appointees in the majority.

Traffic Fatalities Continued To Surge In First Half Of 2016
Traffic fatalities were up 9 percent in the first six months of this year compared with the same period last year, continuing a surge in deaths that began two years ago as the economy improved and travel picked up, according to preliminary estimates released Tuesday by the National Safety Council.

LA to Break Ground on 22,000-Seat Soccer Stadium at Exposition Park
Celebrities and politicians will gather in Exposition Park Tuesday to break ground on a $350 million stadium that will be home to the Southland's newest soccer franchise. The 22,000-seat stadium, at the site of the former Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, will house Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Football Club.

LA Declares Aug. 24 Kobe Bryant Day
The Los Angeles City Council has declared Wednesday as Kobe Bryant Day in Los Angeles as a way of thanking him “For his single-minded dedication to excellence, the fans and the entire city and the region.” The date, 8-24, commemorates the two uniform numbers he wore during his legendary career. Bryant, who won five titles and played his entire 20 years in Laker purple and gold, wore 8 for the first part of his career then switched to 24.
