LAPD Reassigns Investigative Officers to L.A. Rams Games After Fights at Coliseum; Want Owner to Pay for Increased Security
The Los Angeles Police Department was forced to reassign officers, many of whom work for special investigative units, to security at Los Angeles Rams games after two fights broke out at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Mary Beth McDade reports for the KTLA 5 News at 10 on Aug. 24, 2016.

Young Man on Motorcycle Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash in Reseda; Driver Sought: LAPD
A motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Reseda Wednesday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department Department. The collision occurred around 6:45 a.m. in the 19300 block of West Vanowen Street, at the corner of Tampa Avenue. The motorcyclist died at the scene. His body was covered in a pink sheet on the sidewalk, next to a stoplight and not far from the motorcycle wreckage, Sky5 aerial video showed.

Gun Found After Teen Killed ‘Appeared' To Have Been Fired
The Los Angeles Police Department said Tuesday a handgun found after officers shot and killed a 14-year-old boy during a foot chase in Boyle Heights — had been fired.
Chief Charlie Beck told members of the Police Commission the gun was a 9 shot, 22-caliber revolver. “It appeared the gun had been fired,” Beck said. The LAPD said officers killed Jesse Romero August 9 during a chase, after the officers said they saw a gun in Romero's hand and heard a shot.

Can LAPDs proposed Family Liaison Program bridge the communication gap?
In an effort to create a dialogue between LAPD and the families of those who have been fatally shot or died while in police custody, the police department has proposed what is thought to be the nation's first Family Liaison Program. Police Commission President Matt Johnson said the program will provide families with an official point of contact for obtaining documents, including death certificates and other record required by insurance companies.

Kidnapped Children of Gorman Shooting Victim Found Safe in New Mexico
He three kidnapped children of a woman whose body was found in Gorman have been located safely at a motel outside Albuquerque, New Mexico, authorities said. The three children were left at a Motel 6 in the care of a person described as a Good Samaritan who notified local law enforcement. Arrangements are being made for their safe return to California.

Child-molesting couple sexually abuses kids of friends, family
A Newhall man was sentenced Wednesday to 48 years in prison for lewd acts involving 10 children of family and friends in crimes dating back as far as 2001. His live-in girlfriend has already been sentenced after a no-contest plea to one count of a lewd act on a child under 13.

Feds Ask For Competency Hearing For Former LA County Sheriff
Prosecutors have asked a federal judge to determine whether former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is competent to stand trial in his jail abuse case.The Los Angeles Times reports that the request came late Wednesday after a hearing in which Baca's attorneys cast doubt on the mental fitness of Baca, who has Alzheimer's disease.

Killer San Bernardino terrorists kin face justice
The older brother of the San Bernardino terrorist and two other relatives are slated to be tried at the federal courthouse in Riverside in November on charges stemming from an investigation immediately following the massacre. Syed Raheel Farook, 31, and his wife, Tatiana Farook, 31, both of Corona, along with her sister, Mariya Chernykh, 26, of Ontario, were arrested during two raids carried out by FBI agents and U.S. marshals in April.

California Bill Would Require Securing Guns In Vehicles
The California Senate is approving legislation that requires everyone, including law enforcement officers, to secure guns they leave in a vehicle. The bill sent to Gov. Jerry Brown follows several high-profile thefts from the vehicles of law enforcement officers in the San Francisco Bay Area. SB869 by Democratic Sen. Jerry Hill of San Mateo was approved in a 26-12 vote. It would require that handguns left in unattended vehicles be locked in the trunk or in a locked container out of view. Violating the law would be an infraction punishable by a fine of up to $1,000.

Illegal drugs are flowing into California's most guarded prisons — and killing death row inmates
The condemned inmates on California's death row are among the most closely monitored in the state. Death row's 747 inmates spend most of their time locked down, isolated from the rest of the prison system under heavy guard with regular strip searches and checks every half-hour for signs of life. Still, six death row inmates died between 2010 and 2015 with detectable levels of methamphetamines, heroin metabolites or other drugs in their system, according to Marin County coroner records.

‘Hey, Margaret': Jerry Brown scolds Fresno sheriff in voice mail
In his effort to pass a ballot measure to make certain nonviolent felons eligible for early release, Gov. Jerry Brown has turned to direct confrontation – scolding a California sheriff in a voice mail for what he called a “malicious” mailer opposing the measure. “Hey Margaret, I got that mailing on Prop. 57 that you signed,” Brown said in a message received by Margaret Mims, the sheriff of Fresno County, and obtained by The Sacramento Bee.

Soldier Who Killed 5 Dallas Officers Showed PTSD Symptoms
The Army reservist who killed five Dallas police officers last month showed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder after returning home from Afghanistan in 2014, but doctors concluded that he presented no serious risk to himself or others, according to newly released documents from the Veterans Health Administration. Micah Johnson had sought treatment for anxiety, depression and hallucinations, telling doctors that he experienced nightmares after witnessing fellow soldiers getting blown in half.

LAFD fire marshal steps down after criticism that he cut corners on safety
The Los Angeles Fire Department is replacing the official in charge of enforcing fire safety codes for apartment houses, schools, hospitals and other high-occupancy buildings after months of turmoil over lengthy backlogs in inspections. Fire Marshal John Vidovich leaves one of the LAFD's top jobs barely two years into his tenure, a term marked by embarrassing disclosures about delinquent inspections and mounting criticism from the firefighters' labor union.

Opposition group forms against ballot measure to overhaul LADWP
Environmentalists and unions are part of a newly formed coalition fighting a November ballot measure to overhaul the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the group announced Tuesday. “Neighborhoods Against the DWP Power Grab” will campaign against Charter Amendment RRR by raising funds and fighting the measure, organizers said. The charter amendment would give the DWP more power over contracts and hiring, while also expanding the size of the board of DWP commissioners. Backers include Los Angeles City Councilman Felipe Fuentes, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and the DWP's largest union, IBEW 18.
