Tenn. officer fatally shot while responding to call
A police officer has died in a shooting in eastern Tennessee. Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said the officer responded with a Blount County sheriff's deputy to a domestic disturbance. Sheriff James Berrong says when the two arrived Thursday afternoon, a man came out firing and fatally wounded the officer. Crisp said the other officer returned fire. He says the suspect wasn't hit and was taken into custody. Crisp didn't identify the officer, saying some family hadn't yet been notified. He said the man had three small children and had been with the department for several years.

Mother of 11-year-old Echo Park boy found dead in closet charged with murder
It was inside the home in the 2100 block of Santa Ynez Street where police found Yonatan Aguilar's abused body on Monday, after receiving a tip. Police arrested his mother, 39-year-old Verónica Aguilar who was charged Thursday with one count each of murder and child abuse resulting in the boy's death. She is being held on $2 million bail. Yonatan “allegedly died due to neglect and showed signs of severe malnutrition,” prosecutors said in a statement.

Canoga Park strip club shootout may have been sparked by dispute over money
Two armed men who were killed in a Canoga Park strip club by a security guard last week were shot following an apparent confrontation over money, Los Angeles police and the club owner said Thursday. One of the patrons who was fatally shot at the Xposed Gentleman's Club at about 4:20 a.m. Saturday said he lost his wallet before the shooting, according to Detective Bob Dinlocker of LAPD's Operations-Valley Bureau Homicide. After it was found, “he claimed that there was money missing from it,” Dinlocker said.

Caught On Video: Burglars Ransack Home In LA
Detectives sought the public's help Friday to identify three burglary suspects who targeted a home in Los Angeles. Around 6:20 p.m. on July 20, officers responded to a home located in the 15400 block of Deerhorn Road for report of a burglary. Upon their arrival, authorities learned the suspects had made their way into the victim's home by smashing in a sliding back door. The suspects proceeded to take the victim's jewelry, money, clothing and two safes. They fled from the area in a gray Hyundai Santa-Fe.

A man wanted for killing his male and female lovers in the Midwest more than 30 years ago may be dressing as a woman and hiding in Los Angeles, a Michigan investigator chasing the cold case said Wednesday. The trail leading to John Kelly Gentry Jr. went cold after 1983, when he was on the lam and mailed a postcard to his father from Los Angeles, said Monroe County sheriff's Detective Jeff Smith.

A driver has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in North Hills and led to a high-speed pursuit. Mark Christian Johnson, 54, of Escondido was charged with one felony count each of hit and run driving resulting in death, fleeing a pursuing peace officer's motor vehicle while driving recklessly and vehicular manslaughter, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

The driver of a stolen vehicle surrendered to Los Angeles police officers after a brief pursuit in the northeastern San Fernando Valley on Thursday morning. The chase of the stolen car began about 10:41 a.m. at San Fernando Road and Kadota Street in Sylmar, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Jenny Houser.

Suspect Surrenders in Fatal Reseda Hit-And-Run
A driver who was sought in the hit-and-run death of a motorcyclist in Reseda early Wednesday turned himself in Thursday, police said. The driver, identified as Pedro Ramos, 54, of San Fernando, was wanted in connection with a collision that happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday at Vanowen Street and Tampa Avenue. Investigators said the motorcyclist slammed into the truck as the driver made a turn at the intersection. The truck then sped off and the motorcyclist died in the street, officials said.

Police arrested one suspect today and are looking for another who fled on foot after a vehicle pursuit ended in a crash in Eagle Rock Police were in pursuit of a stolen Toyota Prius early this morning and the vehicle crashed near Yosemite and Ellenwood drives, authorities.

Gang member pleads guilty to Cypress Park and jail murders
A gang member avoided a potential death sentence in pleading guilty today to the 2008 murder of a man who was holding a toddler when he was gunned down in the Cypress Park area of Los Angeles and the killing of a cellmate three years later. Jose Angel Gomez, 27, will be sentenced Nov. 18 to two consecutive life prison terms without the possibility of parole. Gomez pleaded guilty to the Feb. 21, 2008, killing of Marco Salas, who was carrying his 2-year-old step-granddaughter when he was killed near Aragon Avenue Elementary School, along with the strangulation of Jonathan Najera in the Men's Central Jail sometime between Feb. 28 and March 1, 2011.

A Los Angeles family asked for help Thursday as they search for a missing loved one who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Lena Wiggins, 76, was last seen August 8, at the family home on South Figueroa Street. “She's just the best woman I've ever had in my life, I can't explain how great she is,” said Wiggins' husband Kenneth Tears. “She's a wonderful mother, wonderful grandmother.” According to the family, Lena Wiggins was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about a year ago, and the disease has progressed quickly.

Accused Kidnappers Who Fled State Arrested in Colorado
A man and the younger sister of a woman found dead in northern Los Angeles County were arrested Thursday in Colorado, as detectives continued to investigate the motive for the slaying and the subsequent kidnapping of the victim's children. The three young children of 26-year-old Kimberly Harvill of Fresno, whose body was found two weeks ago, were found safe Wednesday in a motel outside Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the care of a good Samaritan who notified local law enforcement, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Pursuit Driver Dies in Fiery Crash After Huntington Beach Officer Shot, Saved by Badge
A man suspected of shooting an officer in Huntington Beach before leading authorities on a high-speed pursuit was killed in a fiery crash in the Cajon Pass Friday morning. The incident began when officers responded to a domestic violence call in Huntington Beach at about 12:15 a.m., said Officer Jennifer Marlatt with the Huntington Beach Police Department. Officers attempted to contact a man involved in the incident when he got into a vehicle and drove away, Marlatt said.

Brock Turner: Judge in Stanford sex trial to no longer hear criminal cases
The Santa Clara County judge who faces a recall threat for giving a light sentence to a Stanford student convicted of sexual assault will no longer handle criminal cases -- at his own request. Judge Aaron Persky asked to be reassigned from hearing criminal cases at the Palo Alto courthouse, where he has been under intense fire since early June for sentencing former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner to six months in jail rather than a longer term in state prison for sexually assaulting an intoxicated, unconscious woman outside a fraternity party.

Fewer ex-cons return to prison as crime rates remain steady
Corrections officials say former California prison inmates are being arrested and convicted of new crimes at a relatively steady rate after release. But more are going to county jails instead of state prisons under a law that took effect nearly five years ago. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Thursday that 45 percent of inmates released five years ago were back in prison within three years. That's down from 54 percent last year and a high of 67.5 percent a decade ago.
