SWAT team surrounds assault suspects barricaded in South LA home
Possibly four assault suspects were barricaded inside a South Los Angeles residence early Thursday morning in a standoff with the SWAT team, police said. Officers received a radio call around 1 a.m. about an armed assault involving five men and an adult male victim in South Los Angeles, said Los Angeles police Officer Liliana Preciado. A shooting occurred but the victim was not hit, Preciado said. The exact location of the shooting was not immediately reported.

Man Shot, Killed Near South LA Tire Shop
A man was shot and killed in his vehicle Thursday evening in South Los Angeles.
Police are looking for at least two suspects, but they say no one in the neighborhood is talking. The victim was parked near a tire shop on South San Pedro Street and East 99th Street when he was shot just after 6 p.m. He died at the scene. Officers say at least two men approached the vehicle and fired about ten shots.

Northridge Man Fatally Stabbed By Roommate During Bath: LAPD
A Northridge man was fatally stabbed by his roommate while he was taking a bath on Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers responded to the call around 12:48 p.m. and found the victim with multiple stab wounds in the bathtub. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suspect high on meth, arrested after stabbing random woman at taco truck
A 29-year-old man suspected of carrying out a knife attack on a woman in East Los Angeles remains in custody Friday. The 23-year-old victim who was taken to the hospital for stab wounds to her hands and arms remained in stable condition today, said Lt. Alex Salinas of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's East Los Angeles station. Salinas said deputies who happened to have been in the area used force to take down the man, who later told deputies he had been high on meth all day prior to the attack.

Big rig hits and kills pedestrian on southbound 405 near Westwood; morning traffic snarled
A big rig struck and killed a pedestrian on the southbound 405 Freeway in the Westwood area early Friday, closing all but the carpool lane for more than three hours and snarling morning traffic. The accident near Wilshire Boulevard occurred just after 1 a.m., said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos. All lanes reopened at 4:28 a.m. The victim was described as a 35- to 40-year-old male, Villalobos said

LAPD and L.A. County sheriff unveil phone app for reporting terrorist activity
Los Angeles-area residents who witness potential terrorist activity can now report the details to law enforcement using their smartphones. On Thursday, the LAPD and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department unveiled a new phone app called iWATCHLA that makes filing a report as simple as a few keystrokes.

Police seek information on fatal shooting in Sylmar
Police are asking for the public's help for any information that could lead to the suspect who gunned down a 23-year-old man in Sylmar. Alan Castor was found by police lying on the ground in the parking lot of an apartment complex at Sayre Street and Dronfield Avenue early Wednesday morning. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he died.

Woman in Mercedes-Benz Arrested in Thefts of Hundreds of Packages
Los Angeles police have arrested a woman who they say has been stealing mail and packages all over Southern California. According to police, the woman drove around in a new Mercedes-Benz, grabbing mail and packages from doorsteps. Video shows a woman who appears to be the suspect in action, calmly taking parcels from the front porch of an upscale home in Studio City. David Pulido says he may be a victim.

Echo Park Mom Pleads Not Guilty to Murder of Malnourished Son Found Dead in Closet
A mom from Echo Park accused of killing her 11-year-old son, who allegedly died due to neglect and severe malnutrition, pleaded not guilty to murder and child abuse charges Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported. Veronica Aguilar, 39, was charged with one count each of murder and child abuse resulting in death after the body of her son, Yonatan Daniel Aguilar, was found wrapped in a blanket inside a closet in their home in the 2100 block of Santa Ynez Street last month, authorities reported.

With tens of millions of people flying through Los Angeles International Airport every year, security screeners have their work cut out for them. And that includes the K9s who work with the TSA to sniff out potential explosives. The K9 program at LAX is the largest in the country, and that means plenty of work for dogs like four-year-old Orca. She's a German shorthaired pointer who is trained to detect the odor of explosives, poking her nose around just about everything from passenger luggage to vehicles, cargo facilities and airplane interiors.

A state appeals court panel Thursday upheld the killer's conviction for a series of 2009 gang-related shootings in which two men were killed and another was wounded. The three-justice panel from California's 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected the defense's contention that Andre Upshaw received ineffective assistance from his trial attorney.

75 guns seized in LA County probation sweeps
Seventy five more guns are now off the streets in Los Angeles County and out of the hands of people who've been ordered not to handle them. County officials displayed the guns on Thursday at the Hall of Administration building, touting the recent probation sweeps that seized them.

Judge dismisses case against L.A. County sheriff's deputy accused of filing false police report
A judge has dismissed a perjury case this week against a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy after a jury deadlocked over whether the deputy filed a false police report. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge C.H. Rehm dismissed the case Wednesday against Gregory Rodriguez, who was charged last year with one count each of perjury and submitting the untrue police report.

San Fernando man cleared in 2000 murder of good Samaritan
A San Fernando man arrested this summer in connection with the killing of a good Samaritan who tried to intervene in a dispute nearly 16 years ago was cleared Thursday after authorities determined that he was not the man wanted by police. DNA testing determined that Guillermo Torres was not Samuel Calvario, the man being sought in the Nov. 9, 2000, killing of Daniel Felix, according to Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney John Colello.

Decision on charges in Oakland police sex scandal to be announced
Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley is expected Friday to announce decisions about charges in a sexual misconduct scandal rattling several Bay Area law enforcement agencies. The woman at the center of the case, a 19-year-old sex worker from Richmond who calls herself Celeste Guap, said she had sex with 29 officers from various cities over the past two years.

Santa Clara police union urges officers to work at 49ers game, despite 'concerns' over Kaepernick's comments
The union representing rank-and-file members of the Santa Clara Police Department recommended Thursday that officers continue to voluntarily work at San Francisco 49ers home games. In a letter addressed to Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor and released publicly, the union's board of directors said it would “encourage and support” officers to continue providing security at Levi's Stadium. The union also thanked the mayor for clarifying “a major misconception that we are required to work at 49ers games.”

Fla. deputy seriously injured after thrown from motorcycle
A St. Johns County sheriff's deputy was injured after being ejected from his motorcycle Wednesday afternoon in a crash on State Road 16 near where it meets St. Francis Road in St. Augustine. Westbound traffic was stopped following a crash near the intersection about 4:40 p.m. as a marked motorcycle driven by Deputy Thomas Bickhart was heading west in the eastbound lane of State Road 16 to get to the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Wells Fargo Allegations Sparked by L.A. Times Story, City Attorney's Investigation
Calling it “outrageous” and “a major breach of trust,” local and federal regulators hammered Wells Fargo & Co. for a pervasive culture of aggressive sales goals that pushed thousands of workers to open as many as 2 million accounts that bank customers never wanted. Those allegations, first uncovered by the Los Angeles Times in 2013, led to a massive $185-million settlement package announced Thursday. The settlements put to rest a lawsuit filed last year by Los Angeles City Atty. Mike Feuer.

Can LA new homelessness czar really do anything?
Los Angeles' war on homelessness opened a new front Thursday with the appointment of a new city czar. Meg Barclay, a veteran of affordable housing policy and former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development official, will serve as the city's top adviser on homelessness issues, city leaders announced. Barclay will work out of City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana's office as the city's homeless coordinator.

Bureaucrats beware: Ex-LA City Council members blast DWP ballot measure
Richard Alarcon and Greig Smith joined a growing group of former members of the City Council who have come out strongly against a relatively obscure city measure aimed at changing the governance structure and hiring practices of the Department of Water and Power. Alarcon and Smith issued a joint statement saying Los Angeles Charter Amendment RRR, which is on the November ballot, “takes away voters' decision- making powers and gives it to unelected bureaucrats.”
