Police Search for Several Suspects in String of Studio City Business Burglaries
Police said Thursday they are searching for several suspects after eight burglaries occurred last month at businesses along Ventura Boulevard in Studio City. Kacey Montoya reports from Studio City for the KTLA 5 News at 3 on Sept. 15, 2016.

Loved Ones Hold Memorial Service for Yonatan Aguilar, Boy Found Dead in Echo Park Closet
Family and friends attended a bilingual memorial service for 11-year-old Yonatan Aguilar, who was found dead inside a closet at his Echo Park home in late August. When Yonatan was found on Aug. 22, authorities said he was malnourished, abused and only weighed 34 pounds. His mother, 39-year-old Veronica Aguilar, was arrested and charged with murder and child abuse resulting in death.

Ex-LAPD cop sues city over public disclosures of records
A now-retired Los Angeles police sergeant who detained a “Django Unchained” actress in 2014 after responding to a report she and her boyfriend were having sex in a car sued the city Thursday to prevent public disclosure of his personnel records and those of other officers during an upcoming administrative hearing.

USC Linebacker Osa Masina Charged with Rape in Utah
Things have gone from bad to worse for USC linebacker Osa Masina. After he was suspended indefinitely along with fellow linebacker Don Hill from all team activities earlier in the week, Masina was charged on Thursday with three felonies in the state of Utah. Masina is accused of sexual assault in both Utah and California after the same woman awoke to Masina assaulting her in two separate incidents.

12 Trained Safety Dogs at LAX Failed Bomb-Sniffing Tests
Nearly two dozen trained safety dogs at Los Angeles International Airport failed tests measuring their bomb-sniffing skills from 2013 to 2015. Mary Beth McDade reports from LAX for the KTLA 5 News at 10 on Sept. 15, 2016.

‘Self-harm incident' ties up LAX traffic
A man was taken into custody to be medically evaluated Wednesday night at the parking structure and terminal area at Los Angeles International Airport tying up traffic. The Los Angeles Fire Department assisted the operation at 8:30 p.m., according to a news release, and the incident caused a closure of at least one lane occurred in the Central Terminal Area. The exact address for the incident was 401 World Way, which is parking structure P-4 at the airport.

Man vs. machine: L.A. sheriff's deputies use robot to snatch rifle from barricaded suspect, end standoff
An hours-long standoff in the darkness of the high desert came to a novel end when Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies used a robot to stealthily snatch a rifle from an attempted murder suspect, authorities said Thursday. Officials said the use of the robot to disarm a violent suspect was unprecedented for the Sheriff's Department, and comes as law enforcement agencies increasingly rely on military-grade technology to reduce the risk of injury during confrontations with civilians.

Former L.A. Coliseum executive sentenced to jail in corruption case
Six years ago, Todd DeStefano was an up-and-coming executive for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the storied stadium built to honor the veterans of World War I that has hosted two Summer Olympics. But instead of celebrating the return of the Rams, the disgraced ex-manager, now 43, is heading to jail for his role in what prosecutors described as a wide-ranging corruption scandal that also implicated entertainment promoters who put on raves at the taxpayer-owned venue.

You're not getting out! Triple murderer fails in life sentence appeal
The California Supreme Court refused Wednesday to hear the case against a man convicted of murdering three men, including two brothers, in a West Hollywood apartment during an apparent drug deal that went bad. The state's highest court denied a defense petition seeking its review of the case against Harold Yong Park. In a June 24 ruling, a three-justice panel from California's 2nd District Court of Appeal found that “compelling circumstantial evidence” pointed to Park as the gunman who killed Pirooz Moussazadeh, 27, his older brother, 38-year-old Shahriar Moussazadeh, and Bernard Khalili, 27.

New top cop for Covina police
Covina police Capt. John Curley has been named the city's police chief, it was announced Thursday. Curley will replace Kim Raney, who is retiring on Oct. 13 after serving as the city's police chief for 16 years. Curley, a 23-year veteran of the police department, will assume the duties of chief on Oct. 14.

More Victims in Bay Area Police Sex Scandal, Victim's Attorney Says
An attorney for the young woman at the center of a sexual misconduct scandal involving several California Bay Area police departments says there are other victims. “We could not stand by idly when we learned of this young woman's story, and we became very clear that she was not the only one,” attorney Pamela Price said in a news conference outside a detention center in Stuart, Florida, on Wednesday.

Gov. Brown signs law inspired by cases involving the rape of janitorial workers
Legislation based on a national investigative report detailing cases involving the rape of women working late-night janitorial shifts was signed into law Wednesday by Gov. Jerry Brown. The new law, Assembly Bill 1978, requires janitors and their supervisors to complete sexual harassment training beginning in 2019.

Ohio trooper struck by vehicle dies
An Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper has died after he was hit by a passing car during a traffic stop. Trooper Kenneth Velez, 48, was conducting the stop and was hit outside his patrol vehicle, NewsNet5 reported. “This is a tragedy for the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety,” said Colonel Paul Pride, Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent. “Our prayers go out to the Velez family during this difficult time.” Velez is survived by three children.

LA City Council President Wesson is ‘caretaker' of Valley district vacated by Fuentes
Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson has appointed himself caretaker of the San Fernando Valley City Council district vacated by Felipe Fuentes. Wesson will oversee the working-class district until next spring's election, he announced Thursday, noting in a statement that he “loves the Valley too much” to let it go without representation.
