Detroit sergeant wounded in gunfire succumbs to injuries
A Detroit police sergeant shot earlier this week during a manhunt for a carjacking suspect on the city's east side died from his injuries Saturday, Chief James Craig announced from outside St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Sgt. Kenneth Steil's condition was improving this week, Craig said, but it took a turn. "This is certainly a sad day," Craig said as police cars lined Moross outside the hospital. "We lost a hero."

2 officers shot in Texas while answering suicide call
Two police officers have been shot and wounded while answering a reported suicide at a house in Fort Worth, Texas. The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Friday. Fort Worth police spokesman Sgt. Marc Povero said officers arriving at the house found a man unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. The officers were told a witness was in a backyard shed. Povero said the officers were shot after opening the shed door. Police returned fire.

Police continue search for gunman in East Hollywood shooting
Police on Saturday continued their search for a gunman who opened fire on four men standing outside a home in East Hollywood, killing two and wounding two. The two survivors of the gang-related shooting were listed in stable condition at an area hospital, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Mike Lopez. At about 7:50 p.m. Friday, a man in his 20s walked up and opened fire on a group of people who were congregating at 555 N. Heliotrope Drive, near the Hollywood (101) Freeway, according to Lopez.

Man shot, killed in Watts
A man trying to drive past a vehicle that was blocking a street in Watts was shot and killed early Sunday, and sheriff's detectives were searching for three suspects. Deputies were called to the 1500 block of West 103rd Street at 2 a.m. in response to a shots fired call, according to Deputy Mike Barraza. Deputies found a 24-year-old man in the driver's seat of a vehicle with gunshot wounds. The victim died at the scene, according to Barraza. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

2 men shot, wounded at Sun Valley house party
Two men were wounded at a party Saturday in Sun Valley but police said their injuries were minor. The gunfire erupted at midnight in the 8100 block of Potter Avenue, according to Sgt. Lucas Hamilton of the Los Angeles Police Department's Foothill Division. The two men were treated and released for their wounds, he said, but no one identified the shooter.

LA Police Chief: No Known Threats After East Coast Bombs
Police Chief Charlie Beck says there are no known credible threats to security in Los Angeles after explosions rocked New York City and New Jersey, but residents should remain vigilant. Beck said people should feel safe Sunday attending the first regular season home game of the Los Angeles Rams in 22 years and the annual Emmy Awards.

U.S. Marine Shot in Head in South LA While on Military Leave
A young U.S. Marine has been declared brain dead Sunday after getting shot in the back of the head in South Los Angeles, L.A. police officials said. According to LAPD Media Relations officials, Carlos Segovia was shot once in the head near 31st Street and Western Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. Friday night. Police said a vehicle pulled up beside his and a suspect or suspects opened fire. Segovia was not in uniform when he was shot, according to authorities.

Man critically wounded in Jefferson Park shooting
Police are investigating the shooting of a man who was critically wounded in South Los Angeles' Jefferson Park neighborhood, authorities said Saturday. The gunfire was reported at 8:40 p.m. Friday in the 2100 block of 31st Street, according to Sgt. Carlton Brown of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southwest Division. The victim, estimated to be 25 years of age, was shot in the head while sitting in a vehicle, Brown said. He was taken to the hospital and has shown no brain activity but is still alive, Brown said. There was no suspect information available.

Authorities Seek 3 Men in Connection With Shooting That Left Man Dead in Westmont Area of South L.A.
Authorities are looking for three men in connection with a shooting in the Westmont area of South Los Angeles early Sunday that left a 24-year-old man dead in his car, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Deputies responded to the 1500 block of West 103rd Street about 1:55 a.m.

13-year-old hit by gang gunfire in North Hills
A 13-year-old is in stable condition Friday after what Los Angeles Police Department officials are calling a gang-related shooting when he was wounded by a gunman from a group of five people just after midnight in North Hills. The incident occurred at 12:12 a.m. at Sepulveda Boulevard and Chase Street, said LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman.

LA Officials Team Up to Reverse Trend of Deadly Crashes
If you are driving in the city of Los Angeles, chances are good that you haven't received a speeding ticket. That's because police are not able to run radar or laser on about 80 percent of the streets. The number of speeding tickets has dropped about 80 percent as well. NBC4 first reported this in June, and now the city is taking action. We asked LAPD Traffic Officer Troy Williams to take us on a tour of the streets where he can no longer use radar or laser. "It's almost like a state of lawlessness right now," Williams said.

Man shot outside Hollywood apartment complex
A man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg Saturday while arguing in the front of his Hollywood apartment building with an another man, authorities said. The victim is expected to survive his gunshot wound and the shooting is not believed to be gang-related, according to a watch commander at the LAPD's Hollywood station.

Coolio Arrested at LAX
Rapper Coolio and his bodyguard were arrested for possession of a stolen, loaded firearm Saturday, an airport police officer said. Around 10:50 a.m., Los Angeles Airport Police responded to reports of a prohibited item at Transportation Security Administration screening in Terminal 3 of Los Angeles International Airport, Airport Police Officer Alicia Hernandez said in a statement Saturday.

A man was taken into custody following a head-on hit-and-run collision early Sunday in the North Hills area that injured three people, including the suspect and his passenger, authorities said. Another man was seriously injured and required hospitalization.

Dianey Santos never got the chance to say goodbye to her two young daughters. "For me, it's hard to believe," Emily Santos said. "It's hard to believe that from one day to the other, she's gone." Emily, 15, and her 9-year-old sister Melizabeth got an LAPD escort to the hospital the same night their mother was shot in the head by an alleged South LA gang member. "I didn't know it would be something that horrible," Emily recalls.

Naked Man Flees Venice Residence After Being Confronted by Homeowner
A homeowner in Venice Beach called police Friday morning after a man entered a residence and began taking his clothes off. The incident in the 800 block of Flower Avenue was reported to police just before 2 a.m., said Sgt. Peters with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Kid Cali murder suspect denies shooting rapper
The man accused in an apparent gang-related killing of local rapper Kid Cali at a Granada Hills mansion party has pleaded not guilty. Kenny Birdine, 19, of Inglewood made the plea Friday at the San Fernando Courthouse, a day after he reportedly refused to exit his jail cell at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles. Birdine is accused of fatally shooting 30-year-old Cali — whose real name is Justin Lishey — on Aug. 20 during a party in the 12400 block of Longacre Avenue.

Mistrial Declared in Sanity Phase of Hollywood Arsonist Trial
A mistrial has been declared in the sanity phase of the trial of Harry Burkhart, accused of setting more than 40 fires in Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley. Jurors already convicted Burkhart of setting 49 fires. But they could not reach agreement on whether he was sane at the time. The deadlock means it is likely that the sanity phase of Burkhart's trial will be repeated with a new jury.

Man in custody after armed standoff aboard Amtrak train in San Fernando Valley
An hours long standoff with an armed man who barricaded himself aboard an Amtrak train ended early Saturday after police used tear gas. The man was taken into custody without incident and police recovered a handgun, Amtrak spokeswoman Christina Leeds said. The train carrying 187 passengers and five crew members was evacuated Friday night after several reported seeing a man with a weapon acting erratically.

Mother gets 21 years to life for drowning toddler in custody dispute
An Oceanside woman was sentenced to 21 years to life in prison for intentionally drowning her toddler son after learning she'd have to split custody of the boy with his father. Veronica Rivas, 30, pleaded guilty in Vista Superior Court last month — three weeks before trial — to second-degree murder and willful cruelty to a child.

Feds side with Anaheim Police over secret 'stingray' cellphone tracking
The U.S. Justice Department has sided squarely with the Anaheim Police Department in an ongoing civil liberties legal battle over clandestine cellphone-tracking technology that is increasingly being deployed by law enforcement agencies. Federal prosecutors argue in a recent court filing that police in Orange County's largest city properly withheld key details about the equipment from the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

LA leaders take action to save Bob Hope's Toluca Lake estate from demolition
It came up Friday as a demolition inspection permit for a pool house, production hut and garage. But when Councilman David Ryu saw the pending demolition of outbuildings at the famed Bob and Dolores Hope estate in Toluca Lake, he called for emergency legislation. Faster than one of the late comedian's machine gun zingers, the City Council voted 12-0 to halt any pending teardowns until the city decides whether to deem the Bob Hope estate a city-cultural monument.

LA to dump fossil fuel? 12-0 vote points to 100% green goal
The Los Angeles City Council took a step Friday toward developing a plan for how the city can move away from fossil fuel and toward getting all of its energy from renewable sources like wind and solar. The council voted 12-0 to approve a motion asking the Department of Water and Power, which provides electricity to about 4 million residents, to begin assembling a team of experts, government regulators and stakeholders to research how and when the city could achieve the goal.
