Police Commission tells officers to run away, or else
Run away. If a police officer is confronted by a suspect with a weapon, those entrusted to set policies for the Police Department believe officers should run away. That's the recent finding from the Los Angeles Police Commission which has turned Monday morning quarterbacking into a weekly agenda item at the three-ring circus they preside over every Tuesday morning.

LAPD chief defends officers in fatal shootings: 'nothing else they could do'
A day after the city's police commission ruled two officers were out of policy in a police shooting near downtown, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said there was nothing else the officers could have done. “I think that the commission recognizes that at the point where they discharged their weapons, there was really nothing else they could do,” Beck said, speaking to AirTalk on Wednesday.

110 freeway shuts down after LAPD cop is injured in crash
A Los Angeles police motorcycle officer suffered minor injuries Wednesday afternoon in a crash that briefly shut down the northbound Pasadena (110) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles amid afternoon rush hour. The collision was reported about 3:30 p.m. near Stadium Way, according to the California Highway Patrol. The officer sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. He was able to radio for a rescue ambulance following the crash. One northbound lane was reopened about 45 minutes after the crash, and the other two lanes by about 5:15 p.m., the CHP reported.

MacArther Park argument, shooting between ‘total strangers' leads to arrest
A 34-year-old man was in custody Thursday on suspicion of shooting and wounding a man during an argument in MacArthur Park. The shooting occurred around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Alvarado and Sixth streets. The men were “total strangers” and it wasn't immediately clear what the argument was about, said Detective Frank Marino of the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Station.

A boy was shot and wounded in Boyle Heights Wednesday afternoon, and the suspect was on the loose, police said. The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. in the 100 block of South Utah Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

One person wounded in Westlake district shooting
One person was wounded in a shooting in the Westlake district Wednesday and the suspected shooter was arrested. The victim, a male whose age was not immediately available, was shot about 6:10 p.m. in the area of Alvarado and Sixth streets, according to Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department.

K-9 Officer Bites Teenage Robbery Suspect In South LA
Police Thursday searched for a robbery suspect in South Los Angeles. Four teenagers, who are all under the age of 15 years old, robbed at least two people at gunpoint around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 36th Street and Cimarron, according to police. Upon their arrival, authorities detained two of the suspects at the scene.

$50k Reward Offered In Search For Gunman Who Killed 19-Year-Old Marine In South Los Angeles
Several hundred people gathered in South Los Angeles Monday night to honor a young Marine who had been gunned down in cold blood. Carlos Segovia, 19, was on weekend leave from Camp Pendleton when he was shot in the head last week. He was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car after leaving his girlfriend's home. Doctors declared him brain dead on Sunday.

$15K reward offered for string of cell phone robberies in L.A.
Los Angeles police need your help in their search for two men caught on surveillance video robbing multiple cell phone businesses. The men are believed to have robbed fourteen stores since July 16. At least twelve of the robberies occurred in Central or South Los Angeles.

Robber Sought in South Los Angeles
Three people were detained and police are seeking for one more that were involved in a string of robberies that occurred Wednesday night in South Los Angeles.
Police received an assault with a deadly weapon call at 9:35 p.m. from the area of 37th and Ruthelen streets near Exposition Boulevard, according to the LAPD Southwest Division.

2 extricated and critical in Van Nuys crash
A five-vehicle crash in Van Nuys Tuesday night resulted in a male and female being extricated from their vehicle and transported to a hospital in critical condition. The Los Angeles Fire Department initially reported the crash as involving two vehicles on the 6200 block of Woodman Avenue, but LAPD Valley Traffic Division Detective William Bustos said on Wednesday that the crash involved five vehicles.

Family Of Hit-And-Run Victim Pleads For Break In Case
The family of a woman dragged to her death by a hit-and-run driver is begging someone to give police the break they need. Maria Covarrubias, 79, was crossing Western Avenue at 79th Street in South L.A. on Sept. 14. She had a green light when she started, but detectives think it may have turned red before she made it across.

Woodland Hills man killed opening gate for pizza remembered as loving father
The wife of a Woodland Hills man who was gunned down opening his gate expecting a pizza delivery disputes the police suggestion that he was killed as a result of a business or domestic argument. Hovik Krboyan, a father and military veteran who worked in real estate, was gunned down Sept. 13 in his upscale neighborhood. But his wife, Lilit Muradyan, doesn't believe her husband knew the suspects.

LAX OKs $12M agreement for new police cars
A $12 million agreement to purchase 150 vehicles to replace part of the Los Angeles International Airport's police division fleet was approved by airport commissioners. The board signed off on a purchase agreement with Wondries Fleet Group to buy the vehicles for use by Airport Police personnel.

East Hollywood School Crossing Guard Honored For Saving Girl From Attempted Abduction
A crossing guard at an East Hollywood elementary school was being honored on Wednesday for rescuing an 8-year-old girl from an attempted abduction. She may not be very tall, standing at 4 feet 8 inches, but crossing guard Adrian Young used all her might to fight off a woman who attempted to kidnap a child from Alexandria Avenue Elementary School.

California student had hit list, plans for school shooting
A student had a list of 33 names of students and staff members from his Southern California high school who he wanted to shoot, and a detailed plan to do it, authorities said Wednesday. The student at Encore High School had the intent and capability to carry out the attack, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said at a briefing for parents and press.

As California voters weigh two ballot measures this fall to either abolish the death penalty or institute changes that aim to expedite it, fewer counties are sending murderers to death row. A Bee analysis of death row records found that the verdicts since 2011 come from just 14 of California's 58 counties. In each five-year period before that – going back three decades – at least 22 counties had imposed death sentences.

Riots over police shooting engulf Charlotte for 2nd straight night
What started out as a prayer vigil after the shooting of 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday turned into an angry march and then a night of violence. A man was shot and critically wounded as protesters charged police in riot gear trying to protect an upscale hotel. Charlotte-Macklenburg police tweeted early Thursday that at least four officers suffered non-life threatening injuries in the unrest.

Ventura County Firefighter Killed in Rollover Crash While Headed to the Canyon Fire
A 38-year-old Ventura County firefighter was killed Wednesday morning in a rollover crash while driving to the 12,300-acre Canyon Fire on the Central Coast, authorities said. Two firefighters assigned to the massive blaze were in a water-tender truck when it crashed around 6:20 a.m. on Highway 246 at Purisima Road in the Lompoc area, according to a Ventura County Fire Department news release.

LA leaders give renters more protection against shady landlords
Seeking to protect Los Angeles renters from unscrupulous landlords, the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday voted to require landlords to tell tenants of their rental rights during so-called “cash for keys” deals. Under the new law, landlords seeking to remove tenants from rent-controlled properties with cash offers must now draw up buyout agreements with those renters. A copy must be filed with the city.

L.A. City Council members vent over distracted drivers and pedestrians
Los Angeles City Council members have a message for drivers and pedestrians more focused on sipping lattes, texting friends and reapplying mascara than on getting home safely: Knock it off. A routine vote Wednesday on whether to accept a $500,000 grant to promote Vision Zero turned into a passionate discussion of the dangerous habits of drivers and pedestrians. Vision Zero is a citywide campaign to reduce traffic fatalities to zero by 2025.

Rome Possibly Backing Out Of 2024 Olympic Bid May Help LA's Chances To Host
Although there is still a year left for the International Olympic Committee to decide which city will host the games, if Rome really drops out of the running, it could be good news for Los Angeles. With elaborate plans already in place, there was a significant shakeup on Wednesday in the race to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. After only three months in office, the new mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, rejected her city's bid, saying in a news conference that pursuing the games any further would be financially irresponsible.
