LAPD mourns ‘tragic death' of detective assigned to Derrick Rose rape case
The Los Angeles Police Department is mourning the loss of a detective who died in Whittier in an apparent suicide. “We are heartbroken about the tragic death of Detective Nadine Hernandez, a 19-year veteran of the department,” the LAPD said in a statement Wednesday. “It is a loss that touches us all in the LAPD family.”

Police from around the country expected at memorial for slain L.A. sheriff's sergeant in Lancaster
Law enforcement officers from as far as New York are expected to join state and local dignitaries along with friends and relatives of slain Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Steve Owen at a memorial in Lancaster Thursday morning to commemorate his life. A procession starting at 8 a.m. will cause temporary road closures along the route as Owen's body is taken from the city's sheriff's station to Lancaster Baptist Church, where the service will begin at 10 a.m.

Suspect Armed With Rifle Killed After Shooting 2 Boston Police Officers
A man armed with an assault rifle and wearing a ballistic vest was killed after shooting two Boston police officers responding to a domestic incident Wednesday night, officials said. Both officers were in "extremely critical" condition early Thursday, with one of them suffering life-threatening injuries from the dramatic shootout, Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans told reporters.

How cops feel about the LAPD's new reforms
The Commission voted to have LAPD officers get more role-playing training to help them learn how to de-escalate encounters and avoid uses of deadly force. In his comments yesterday, Chief Beck didn't sound opposed to the Commission's directive. However, the union for his officers isn't happy. Lou Turriaga, a Director with the Los Angeles Police Protective League discusses how the Commission mandated new training but failed to provide any funding or staffing to implement the training.  This will make the city less safe, argues Turriaga, as more officers will have to be pulled from patrol and other assignments throughout the year.

You've seen the numerous protests across the country whenever a police officer is accused of shooting someone who may or may not be armed. But what if those people who are critical of police, got a chance to see what's it's really like to be an officer? Three Southern California residents got a chance to do just that.

Harbor City Hamburger Restaurant Owner Killed by Stray Bullet in Double Homicide: LAPD
The owner of a longtime hamburger establishment in Harbor City was killed by stray bullets fired by a gunman who had successfully targeted another man inside the restaurant on Wednesday morning, police said. The shooter walked into Bob's Hamburgers, in a strip mall at 1151 Pacific Coast Highway, and wordlessly fired on his intended victim, according to police on scene. The restaurant's owner came out, was in the line of fire and was shot, Los Angeles Police Department Detective David Cortez said.

2 Hospitalized In Unknown Condition After Shooting In South LA
Two people were hospitalized in unknown condition after being shot Wednesday morning in the Green Meadows neighborhood of South L.A., authorities said. The shooting happened at about 10:30 a.m. in the 900 block of 94th Street, said Officer Irma Mota, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Two suspects were observed running from the scene, according to witnesses.

Man critical in South LA shooting
A man in his 30s was shot and critically wounded this morning in South Los Angeles, police said. The shooting was reported shortly after 3 a.m. in the area of Flower and 42nd streets, said Officer Jenny Houser of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Division. The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition, she said.

Police need help in locating missing 84-year-old woman
The family of Maria Teresa Cruz and the Los Angeles Police Department's Missing Persons Unit are asking for the public's help in locating her. Maria was last seen on September 29, 2016, in the 800 block of World Way Avenue (Los Angeles International Airport) in the city of Los Angeles.  She has not been seen or heard from since, and her family is extremely concerned for her welfare.

Some South LA Residents Fed Up With Piles Of Trash Strewn All Over Their Neighborhood
Some South Los Angeles residents said they are fed up with the growing piles of trash that litters their neighborhood. Ashley Allen documented on Facebook the garbage that is strewn all over the streets, block after block. “This is what my son has to look at every morning,” Allen said. “The amount of trash that's been there, the illegal activity that's been there. It's just been kind of hard on all of us around here.”

Man charged with trying to kill 2 L.A. sheriff's deputies at Santa Monica Metro station
A 31-year-old man was charged Wednesday with trying to kill two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies who were patrolling a Metro station in Santa Monica, authorities said. Thomas Napack, 31, faces two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer. If convicted, he faces up to life in state prison, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Driver arraigned in deadly hit-and-run crash that killed octogenarian
An accused hit-and-run driver arrested three years after he allegedly fled the scene of a Van Nuys collision that killed an 84- year-old man with a walker pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a felony charge. Arthur Song, 32, was arrested last month in connection with the crash that fatally injured Asghar Abbassi, who was crossing in a marked crosswalk at White Oak Avenue at Valerio Street about 6 a.m. on Aug. 26, 2013, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Three sheriff's deputies were hailed as heroes Wednesday for preventing a suicidal woman from falling several stories at the Gov. George Deukmejian Courthouse in Long Beach. The incident occurred about 4 p.m. Tuesday at the facility at 275 Magnolia Ave., the sheriff's department reported.

Rowland Heights Woman Convicted After Fatally Stabbing Brother's Girlfriend With Scissors: DA
A 20-year-old woman was convicted of manslaughter after killing her brother's girlfriend with a pair of scissors, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.  Lisette Kimberly Moreno pleaded no contest to a felony count of voluntary manslaughter. Moreno also admitted a special allegation that she personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, scissors, during the crime.

Jury Begins Deliberations in Trial of Young Woman Charged in USC Grad Student's Death
Jury deliberations began Wednesday in the trial of the first of four young people to go on trial on charges stemming from the beating death of a USC graduate student from China, who was attacked near the campus two years ago. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge George G. Lomeli handed the cas against 18-year-old Alejandra Guerrero to the seven-woman, five-man jury just before 10 a.m.

Sacramento County annual gun sales increase 406 percent in last 15 years
Sacramento County residents continue to buy firearms at an unprecedented rate, according to data released Wednesday by the California Department of Justice. Annual gun sales increased 406 percent in Sacramento County during the last 15 years, a larger jump than in any other urban California county. Each year since 2015, on average, about three guns were sold for every 100 county residents.

Homeless housing crisis aided with $64.6 million loans
Half a dozen affordable and homeless housing projects in Los Angeles were awarded a total of $64.6 million in zero-and low- interest loans from the state's cap-and-trade fund, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Wednesday. The projects include four homeless housing developments totaling 348 units, and two developments with a combined 205 units to be valued at affordable or below-market rates.
