Law enforcement officers gather at memorial for slain L.A. County sheriff's sergeant: 'He was the best of us'
They arrived in shades of blue, green, tan — with proud shoulders and weary faces. Many knew well the man whose body lay in the black hearse escorted into a Lancaster church parking lot. Many did not. Still, they had traveled from as far as Chicago and New York to pay tribute to a brother gunned down in what the sheriff of Los Angeles County had called a “calculated execution.”

‘Mr. Owen spoke up' for me, says homeless man at slain deputy's memorial
In the midst of the thousands who came to Lancaster Thursday to mourn slain Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Steve Owen was Herman Scarborough. It was Owen, all those years ago, who convinced a judge to give him 90-days in a rehabilitation program instead of a year in county jail. “I took the 90 days,” Scarborough said. “Mr. Owen spoke up and said jail time won't do any good. At the most, he would do three weeks. ‘Give him 90 days.'”

Mayor blames California governor in sheriff's sergeant death
The mayor of Lancaster claimed Thursday that a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department sergeant who served his area until being shot to death on duty last week would be alive if not for Gov. Jerry Brown's "realignment" plan to reduce the state prison population. The governor's spokesman said the mayor's "wild claims" are baseless.

Officer's Kevlar helmet deflects gunman's bullet, but mother and 9-month-old baby are wounded
A suspect who barricaded himself inside a home is dead after he gravely wounded his girlfriend and 9-month-old daughter Thursday, then fired numerous shots at police, striking an officer's Kevlar helmet, authorities in Tulare said. Larry Zamora, 37, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following an hours-long standoff and gun battle with law enforcement, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said at a news conference.

Fight Over Thermostat May Have Led To 911 Call, 2 Cops Shot
The domestic disturbance that Boston police were responding to when two veteran officers were shot and wounded may have started as an argument over the thermostat, police said. The officers were called late Wednesday night to an apartment in the East Boston neighborhood, where Kirk Figueroa, 33, was allegedly threatening his roommate with a knife, police Commissioner William Evans said.

Arrest Made in Fatal Double Shooting at Harbor City Hamburger Restaurant
A man was arrested in connection with a double homicide at a longtime hamburger establishment in Harbor City that killed restaurant's owner and another man on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. According to the LAPD, at about 9:25 a.m. Joey Mendoza walked Bob's Hamburgers, in a strip mall at 1151 Pacific Coast Highway, and fired several shots at his intended victim who was standing near the counter. That's when the owner came out and was struck by a stray bullet.

71-Year-Old Ice Cream Man Brutally Beaten, Robbed In North Hollywood
A grandfather selling ice cream in a North Hollywood neighborhood was brutally beaten and robbed of the $80 in his pocket. His devastated family is hoping to find the person responsible for the cold-hearted crime. On Thursday, David Juan Martinez was still bruised but recovering from the heartless beating. Tuesday night, the 71-year-old was pushing his ice cream cart along Vanowen Street near Lemp Avenue, walking the same route he's taken every day for 30 years.

Woman Fatally Struck By Vehicle While Crossing Street In Mar Vista
A woman was fatally struck by a vehicle Friday as she crossed a street in Mar Vista. The crash unfolded around 2 a.m. in the area of Culver Boulevard and Slauson Avenue, according to police. A preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the vehicle called 911 and waited for officers to arrive to the scene.

Nightclub owner sentenced to prison for laundering money in cross-border drug trade
A Pico Rivera nightclub owner was sentenced to prison Thursday for laundering money in a drug-trafficking ring operating in the United States and Mexico, authorities said. Edgar Fragoso, the owner and general manager of El Rodeo nightclub, had admitted to laundering about $235,000 in cash through his Washington Boulevard nightclub, according to court papers.

Rapper Coolio Charged After Firearm Allegedly Discovered in Bag at LAX
Weeks after a firearm was allegedly found in his backpack at LAX, rapper Coolio has been charged in the case, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Thursday. Coolio faces a felony count of possession of a firearm by a felon with two prior convictions, according to a DA's news release. He was convicted in 2001 of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle, and in 2009 on a charge of possessing a cocaine base.

Jury Finds 18-Year-Old Woman Guilty of First-Degree Murder in Beating Death of USC Engineering Grad Student
An 18-year-old woman, who was one of four people accused of the violent beating death of USC grad student Xinran Ji, was found guilty Thursday of first-degree murder, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday. Jurors also found true a special circumstance of murder during the commission of an attempted robbery against Alejandra Guerrero, who was 16 at the time of the fatal attack on 24-year-old Ji but tried as an adult.

How a San Bernardino officer builds community trust
On a recent Sunday evening, Jerry Segura heard a commotion outside his San Bernardino home. He looked outside, saw a San Bernardino police vehicle and heard raised voices. Curious, he went outside. Sgt. Christopher Gray, in full uniform, tossing a football back and forth with three young men, who moments earlier had accidentally struck the windshield of Gray's police SUV. The officers tracked the suspects and prevailed in a gun battle, preventing the attackers from doing further harm and rescuing a fellow LEO in the effort.

Stabbed 15 times, killer gets 16 years in pizza parlor murder
A Bakersfield man who brutally stabbed a man to death 15 times at a pizza parlor in Monterey Park almost four years ago was sentenced Thursday to 16 years to life in state prison. Jose De Jesus Ruiz, 26, was convicted July 7 of second-degree murder for the Oct. 6, 2012, killing of Patrick Raymond Ortega, 25, of Monterey Park, who was stabbed 15 times at a Shakey's restaurant at 1955 S. Atlantic Blvd.

New $350M federal courthouse unveiled; first case ex-LA Sheriff Baca
Almost four years in the making, downtown Los Angeles' new $350 million federal courthouse was unveiled Thursday for the first time. While the U.S. Marshals Service has begun operations at the mirror-and- glass building, judges will begin moving to the sleek structure at Broadway and First Street in the next few weeks.

Trial starts Monday in death of Bell Gardens mayor
As he weeped, Willie Crespo said, “I feel like this is just a nightmare and I'm going to wake up out of this and I don't.” Just over two years ago, Crespo's brother was killed. Daniel Crespo was the Mayor of Bell Gardens. His wife, Lyvette, was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of voluntary manslaughter and of firing three shots into Crespo's chest and killing him. At her arraignment, she pleaded not guilty.

An Accidental Shooting Kills a Child Every Other Day
Hours earlier, he was a happy 4-year-old who loved Ironman and the Hulk and all the Avengers. Now, as Bryson Mees-Hernandez approached death in a Houston hospital room, his brain swelling through the bullet hole in his face, his mother assured the boy it was OK to die. "When you are on the other side," his mother, Crystal Mees, recalls telling him, "you are going to see Mommy cry a lot. It's not because she's mad. It's because she misses you."

Los Angeles revenue modest, not as good as previous years
The city of Los Angeles saw a modest 2.9 percent growth in revenue in the 2015-16 fiscal year, which is not as strong as in previous years, according to a preliminary financial report released Thursday by Controller Ron Galperin. Galperin's review of the city's 2015-16 fiscal year found that revenue grew by $148 million for the city. Property tax revenue growth came in flat and was partly made up for by a record-setting 14 percent growth in hotel tax revenue.

Measure A in San Diego County is among the most controversial issues on the November ballot. The half-cent sales tax increase would give billions of dollars to new public transit, biking and walking projects. But north of San Diego, Measure M in Los Angeles County enjoys wholehearted support from a broad coalition of environmental, progressive, labor and business organizations. This is despite the share of highway funding being even greater, at 17 percent.

North Hills residents vent frustrations over homelessness at town hall meeting
Some homeless encampments are named after their respective residents in parts of the northeast San Fernando Valley, an alarming sign that street dwelling has firmly taken root in Los Angeles. Locals say “that's Rose's encampment and that's Felipe's encampment,” Los Angeles city staffer Jim Dantona, a top aide to Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez, explained at a Thursday forum on homelessness in North Hills.
