FBI director: Data does not reflect concerns of epidemic of police violence
The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation told police officers at a national conference the data does not back up talk of an epidemic of situations involving police shooting black men. "In the absence of information, we have anecdotes, we have videos, we have good people believing something terrible is happening in this country," Comey said in a speech at the conference. "In a nation of almost one million sworn law enforcement officers, and tens of millions of police encounters every year, a small group of videos serves as proof an epidemic."

Suspect in S.F. Police Shooting Dies, Officer Critically Wounded
A man who allegedly shot a police officer in the head Friday night in San Francisco's Lakeshore neighborhood has died, according to the San Francisco Police Department. The deadly incident began around 8:15 p.m. Friday, when officers responded to the Lakeshore Shopping Center after receiving a call about a man causing a disturbance and making threats, police said. When officers encountered the man in the first block of Everglade Drive, police say he fired several shots toward the officers, striking one of them in the head.

2 Boston police officers wounded in shooting remain critical
Officials say the two Boston police officers shot and wounded remain in critical but stable condition. In Twitter posts Saturday, the Boston Police Department said Officer Matt Morris was undergoing surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.

2 Arrested In Deadly West Adams Party Shooting
Two people have been arrested in connection to a house party shooting in the West Adams area that left three people dead and 12 others wounded, authorities from the Los Angeles Police Department said Sunday. The suspects were identified as Mowayne McKay, 33, and Diego Reid, 25, both of whom are Jamaican nationals, police said.

Fundraising Page Created for Children of LAPD Detective
A GoFundMe page has been created to raise money for the education of the three children of a Los Angeles Police detective died Tuesday. Nadine Hernandez, 44, was found suffering from a gunshot wound after officers responded to a home in Whittier, according to Lt. Jay Tatman of the Whittier Police Department.

Crowd Gathers in Street After Police Traffic Stop and Fatal Shooting
A deadly shooting and a felony traffic stop within a block of each other caused tension among residents and police officers Friday night in a neighborhood where an 18-year-old was fatally shot by police earlier this month. Police got into a brief shoving match with lookiloos in a street in South Los Angeles after a traffic stop. Police ordered several suspected burglars out of a car at 108th Street and Western Avenue when a group of people approached.

Daring Package Theft Caught On Video In North Hills
Video captured a package thief snatching a couple's belongings right off their front porch in North Hills on Friday. A man seen on surveillance video walking up to a home doesn't live there, but acts like he does. He looks around to make sure the coast is clear, pauses on the front porch - long enough to swig out of a bottle - then makes his move, stealing a package from Amazon.

Man arrested in Studio City hit-and-run that killed Robert Meurer
A 53-year-old man was arrested in connection with the vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash in Studio City that killed a musical collaborator of Grammy winner Christopher Cross, police said Friday. Robert Meurer, a 65-year-old singer-songwriter and educator, was struck about 7:25 p.m. on Sept. 23 in the 12000 block of Moorpark Street, near Laurel Canyon Boulevard, by a car that left the scene, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Arrest Made in Carjacking and Kidnapping on UCLA Campus
A man accused of an Oct. 3 kidnapping and carjacking on the UCLA campus was arrested Thursday in Santa Monica. Jason Levi Garza, 42, was taken into custody about 1 p.m. following a traffic stop near his home, according to the campus police department.

1 killed, 2 injured in North Hills car crash; 1 arrested on suspicion of DUI
A 35-year-old motorist, suspected of driving drunk, was arrested on suspicion on gross vehicular manslaughter for allegedly triggering a five-vehicle crash in North Hills that killed another motorist and injured two other people, a police officer said Sunday. Panorama City resident Braulio Triana was traveling eastbound on Roscoe Boulevard in a Honda Odyssey at 9:10 p.m. Saturday when he allegedly hit a 2001 Ford Taurus that was northbound on Woodley Avenue, said Officer Bobby Hammers of the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division.

Person detained for questioning in deadly Koreatown crash
Police Sunday said a person has been detained for questioning in connection with a fiery two-vehicle crash in Koreatown, where a motorist allegedly ran a red light and caused the death of two men. A 2014 Audi A4 going westbound on Third Street failed to stop for the red light and hit a Nissan Murano going northbound on Wilton Place, according to Officer Jenny Houser of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.

Just months after adding 100 electric cars for non-emergency duty, the Los Angeles Police Department plans to test a Tesla sedan as a patrol car, a department official said Friday. The large battery capacity of the Tesla sedan, affording it both high performance and longer range, sets it apart from the smaller electric cars on the market. However, the cost of the batteries puts the Tesla in the realm of luxury cars.

Suspect found guilty in death of Calif. deputy
A Camarillo man accused of killing a Ventura County sheriff's deputy was found guilty of second-degree murder Friday, ending a years-long saga that began with the death of Yevhen "Eugene" Kostiuchenko in October 2014. After nearly two days of deliberations — jurors agreed that Kevin Hogrefe, 27, was guilty of the October 2014 death of Deputy Yevhen “Eugene” Kostiuchenko while driving drunk. The jury also found Hogrefe guilty of felony fleeing the scene of an accident.

LAPD Chief Beck, Chicago PD bet sandwiches over Dodgers-Cubs series
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson are making a friendly bet on the National League Championship series between the LA Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs. Memorial garden honoring 4 slain CHP officers getting makeover
It is known in law enforcement as “The Incident,” a 1970 traffic stop that sparked a fierce 4-1/2-minute gun fight in the parking lot of a Newhall restaurant. It left four California Highway Patrol officers dead. Their sacrifice was commemorated in a memorial garden at the CHP's Newhall station, but it has become time-worn over the years. Now, the memorial honoring slain officers George Alleyn, Walt Frago, Roger Gore and James Pence, is being spruced up through the efforts of the station's senior volunteers and two Santa Clarita Valley businesses.

Manson Follower Robert Beausoleil Denied Parole For 1969 Murder
California officials said Friday that they have again denied parole for a follower of cult leader Charles Manson who is serving a life sentence for a murder he committed 47 years ago. Parole officials decided that Robert Beausoleil, 68, should remain in prison for the 1969 death of musician Gary Hinman. He can seek parole again in three years, said board spokesman Luis Patino.

Heroin Crime Immunity Yields Mixed Results, AP Review Finds
Reeling from a surge in heroin overdoses, authorities in the Cincinnati area made an offer: Hand in potentially deadly drugs and you won't be charged. But the blanket immunity granted by a judge there over a month ago hasn't brought in any heroin so far. Results from similar efforts elsewhere have also yielded few drugs, according to a review by The Associated Press.

A 1-year-old girl is recovering thanks to two New York City police officers who sprang to action after observing the baby turning blue in her mother's arms. Police say Officers Felix Baez and Giovanni Laguna were patrolling a Bronx neighborhood when they saw Lilina Benigno running with her child, Ashley Dolores, down the street Friday night yelling "help" in Spanish.
