Deputy killed in Modoc County — the 4th on-duty California officer to die in 2 weeks
A 31-year-old sheriff's deputy in Northern California was fatally shot Wednesday while responding to a disturbance call, and the suspected gunman was taken into custody, authorities said. Modoc County Sheriff's Deputy Jack Hopkins responded to a reported assault or disturbance about 10:30 a.m. in a rural area 10 miles south of Alturas, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

2 Arrested in Quadruple-Fatal West Adams Party Shooting Released, Not Charged
Two men arrested on suspicion of murder in a fatal shooting at an unpermitted West Adams restaurant have been released, and the investigation is continuing, authorities said Wednesday. The shooting occurred early Saturday morning at a birthday party being held at a home in the 2900 block of Rimpau Boulevard. The home is used as a makeshift Jamaican restaurant, police said.

LAPD's Beck: Reforms on use-of-force are shift in focus, not disciplinary change
LAPD Chief Charlie said a sweeping set of reforms approved by the Police Commission earlier this month won't have a huge impact on police training or policy, but will mean a new focus for both. “I don't think there's gonna be a huge change,” Beck told Airtalk host Larry Mantle, “because we already do role-playing. We already do scenario-based training. We already have our fire arms trainings simulators. Much of this is in place, and it's a further refinement of things that we already do.”

Hunt for killer in downtown LA stabbing: Do you know ‘witness' in video?
Police Wednesday released surveillance video of a man wanted for questioning in a deadly stabbing near downtown Los Angeles. The crime occurred about 8:20 p.m. July 23 in the 2000 block of West Pico Boulevard. Robert Delgado, 25, died at the scene.

Former LA-area teacher slashes throat in court after guilty sex assault verdict
Moments after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage relative of his live-in girlfriend, an English teacher slashed his throat Wednesday with a razor in a Santa Ana courtroom. Jeffrey Scott Jones of Huntington Beach, who was out of custody on bail during his trial, was rushed to a hospital.

Burglars Sought After Stealing $6,000 From 92-Year-Old Montecito Heights Woman
Los Angeles police are searching for two suspects on Wednesday after a 92-year-old woman was robbed in her home. Police responded to a grand theft call in the 4000 block of Via Marisol on July 3. There, officers spoke with the victim who explained how the burglars followed her and stole her money.

Suspected DUI driver takes out power pole in Valley Village
A suspected DUI driver hit a light pole, collapsing power lines Wednesday morning at the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Magnolia boulevards in Valley Village. Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Liliana Preciado said officials received a traffic collision call at 1:51 a.m., and when authorities arrived they learned a vehicle hit the pole, which then “completely collapsed.”

Surveillance Footage Shows Burglars Stealing $100,000 Worth of Jewelry From Woodland Hills Home
An unknown number of thieves jumped the fence at a Woodland Hills home Saturday, reportedly making off with $100,000 in jewelry. Luckily, the family has 12 security cameras and was able to catch the crime on tape, but they are hoping to find the culprits before they strike more in the area.

Homeless killer guilty in stomping, beating death of fellow transient
A homeless man was convicted Wednesday of a fellow transient's beating and stomping death outside a fast-food restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. A Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated less than three hours before finding Charles Allender, 42, guilty of second-degree murder in the Feb. 7, 2015, attack on Derrick Hamilton in the parking lot of an eatery in the 700 block of Cesar Chavez Avenue.

Man gets 21-year prison term for involvement in Sun Valley killing
A 22-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday to 21 years in state prison for his role as an accomplice in a Sun Valley killing that was motivated by a plot to collect on a $2.5 million life insurance payout. Nazaret “Nick” Bayamdzhyan pleaded no contest Sept. 12 to voluntary manslaughter and admitted a gun allegation stemming from the April 24, 2013, killing of 33-year-old Joshua West.

Derrick Rose was wearing a big smile as he walked out of the federal courthouse Wednesday in Downtown Los Angeles. His jury of six women and two men cleared him of all of the allegations. He and two friends were accused of gang-rape allegations. The jury said it didn't happen.

Sex attack by massage therapist? NoHo worker pleads not guilty
A massage therapist accused of sexually assaulting a woman during a massage session at her home in Santa Clarita pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a felony charge. Daniel Holbert, 48, of Burbank, is charged with one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object by fraudulent representation stemming from the alleged March 12 assault. Holbert — who works out of a North Hollywood gym — was arrested Aug. 23 and released the same day on a $100,000 bond.

UCLA says analysis of campus shooting led to security improvements
Students and faculty saw police swarm their campus. They heard rumors of gunshots and hid in bathrooms. When they classrooms didn't lock, they piled furniture against the doors and tried to construct makeshift barricades. At UCLA, June 1 was a day of tragedy, fear and confusion. The campus was on lockdown until noon. Only later did the news break that a former doctoral student had stormed the office of engineering professor William Klug, 39, and shot Klug before killing himself.

Man in wheelchair detonates pipe bomb in Oakland clinic, killing himself
A man in a wheelchair killed himself Tuesday after detonating a pipe bomb inside a health clinic in Oakland, police said. The deadly incident was reported about 6:26 p.m. at the San Antonio Health Center in the 1000 block of International Boulevard, according to the Oakland Police Department.

San Jose could require gun owners to lock firearms at home when they're away
Gun owners in the city may have to lock up their firearms when they're not at home under a proposal a City Council committee considered Wednesday that the police chief said could be enacted by next winter. City Councilmen Ash Kalra and Raul Peralez had proposed that rule — believed to be a first of its kind for a big city — as part of a “gun violence prevention” ordinance in San Jose. State law requires gun owners to keep firearms locked up if they have children in the house.

Georgia Executes Man Who Killed Police Officer, Wounded 2nd
A man convicted of killing an Atlanta police officer and wounding a second officer with an AR-15 rifle was executed late Wednesday, becoming the seventh inmate put to death in Georgia this year. Gregory Paul Lawler, 63, was pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m. at the state prison in Jackson after he was injected with the barbiturate pentobarbital. He was convicted of murder in the October 1997 slaying of Officer John Sowa and for critically wounding Officer Patricia Cocciolone.

Garcetti rejected as Hillary's VP: Mayor at Vegas debate
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti could have been a contender – for vice president of the United States. While Garcetti will attend the debate between Clinton and GOP candidate Donald Trump as a supporter of Hillary, the mayor and former secretary of state have had a little bit of a rocky past. Garcetti's mayoral office last November issued a written statement endorsing Clinton, but an hour later issued a second news release saying the endorsement had been sent in error. Turns out the mayor's office said the error was making the endorsement using government resources of the mayor's public office.

For years, many Los Angeles residents have watched with alarm as homeless encampments spread across the city, from the sidewalks of skid row to alleys in South Los Angeles, behind shopping centers in the Valley and even on the bluffs above the Pacific Ocean. Next month, voters will have to decide whether these concerns are strong enough to approve a new tax to fight homelessness.
