Law Enforcement: Prop. 57 Will Put 'Hard-Core Criminals' Back on Streets
A group of law enforcement officials gathered in downtown Los Angeles Thursday to blast a measure on the November ballot billed as an effort to keep "non-violent" convicts out of prison, saying the proposition will put dangerous people back on the streets. "Do we really need more parolees and hard-core criminals on the streets? That's what Proposition 57 does," said Brian Moriguchi, president of the Professional Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles.

Man Found Fatally Shot on Street in Pacoima; Search on for Gunman
A search is underway for whoever fatally shot a man in Pacoima early Thursday morning. The shooting was reported about 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Oneida Avenue and Chamberlain Street, said Capt. Jim Setzer of the Los Angeles Police Department's Mission Area station. Arriving officers found a Hispanic man suffering from a gunshot wound, said LAPD Sgt. Bennie Boatwright.

Beck Testifies That Age Not Reason He Passed Up 67-Year-Old Lieutenant For Promotion
Chief Charlie Beck testified today that age had no bearing on his decision not to promote to captain a Los Angeles police lieutenant who later sued the department for age discrimination. Beck said he has the final say on which candidates become captains after personnel assessments are given him by assistant chiefs and bureau chiefs, which he referred to as “direct reports.” He said plaintiff John Cook II, now 67, was not passed over due to his age. “It turns out we're about the same age,” the 63-year-old Beck said. “I'm not ready to leave yet.”

Rape suspect escapee shot in carjacking, detective shooter named
Los Angeles police Thursday released the name of a detective who shot and wounded a kidnapping and carjacking suspect last month near County-USC Medical Center after the man fled from custody. Detective David Meza, a 26-year Los Angeles Police Department veteran, shot Freddy Bailon, 36, about 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 28.

Appeal denied for ex-LAUSD teacher who killed estranged wife
The California Supreme Court refused today to review the case against a former Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school teacher convicted of murdering his estranged wife, who had taken refuge at a friend's home in West Hills. Michael Rodney Kane was found guilty in March 2015 of first-degree murder for the June 15, 2013, stabbing death of his estranged wife, Michelle, 43. Kane -- who is serving a life prison term without the possibility of parole -- was also convicted of making criminal threats and disobeying a protective order.

Backpage.com goes on attack against Kamala Harris over prosecution
The operators of the classified ad website Backpage.com have asked a Sacramento County judge to dismiss criminal charges filed by state Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris, who accused them of conspiring to profit off the prostitution and trafficking of women and girls. In a motion filed Wednesday, attorneys for Backpage Chief Executive Carl Ferrer and the site's two former owners, James Larkin and Michael Lacey, contend that federal law and the 1st Amendment shield the publisher from prosecution over the content of ads posted by customers.

Police officers in Portland, Ore., have seen their ranks slowly dwindle as their fellow officers retire or seek other opportunities. At the same time, the city's population and number of 911 calls keep climbing. Officials say officers often don't even have time to investigate low-level crimes.

NY officer injured after cruiser explodes
A town police officer escaped with only cuts, bruises and a possible slight concussion when an oxygen tank in his patrol car apparently exploded Tuesday morning. The officer, Taso Karabelas, was on patrol near the intersection of Gardnertown Road and Union Avenue when he noticed smoke coming from his car.

Video: Austin cop shot, suspect killed in gun battle
An Austin police officer who fatally shot a burglary suspect who resisted arrest and opened fire last April will face no charges. A jury concluded that Officer Armando Perez will face no charges in the death of 25-year-old Darrin Martin, KHOU reported. According to the publication, a worker at an apartment complex thought Martin was acting suspicious and confronted him. After Martin fled the scene, the worker called 911 and pursued him. Officer Perez caught up to the pair in a parking lot.

Mexican judge denies El Chapo's appeals against extradition
A federal judge rejected five appeals by jailed drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to avoid extradition to the United States, a week after Mexico said it aimed to send him north of the border by early next year. The legendary Sinaloa Cartel leader, who has twice escaped maximum-security prisons in Mexico, can still appeal to higher courts and his legal battle against extradition is expected to continue.
