LAPD officer fatally shoots two people just days apart. How quickly should officers who kill return to work?
While shootings by police have received much attention, they remain relatively rare events. In 2015, for example, the LAPD reported more than 1.5 million contacts between police and the public. Of those encounters, 21 ended with deadly gunfire from officers. But it's even more unusual for an officer to fatally shoot two people in such a short period of time. Lou Turriaga, a director for the union that represents the LAPD's rank and file, said he believed the department offered strong support for officers after shootings. It's rare for police to fire their guns in the line of duty, he noted — Turriaga said he hasn't during his 28 years as an LAPD officer — and each officer who does reacts differently.

LAPD Gets Tesla Model S Police Cruiser To Test Out
Most people know what an LAPD car looks like, but one marked black-and-white you may see in downtown L.A. looks a little different. It's a Tesla. "We found a car that is very spacious inside. It has lots of technology, and it has also the performance that actually can match any patrol car today," said Vartan Yagiyan with the LAPD's Administrative Services Bureau. The LAPD's one Tesla is a regular Model S, and yes, it would be plenty fast enough for one of Southern California's legendary police pursuits. The next question of course is, how much tax money was spent?

Officers wrestle with emotions after fatal shootings
For obvious reasons, much of the attention after a shooting goes to the deceased and their families, and to the policy questions that are raised about race, police tactics and accountability, especially when white officers kill unarmed blacks, as has been the case in the most disquieting incidents over the past several years. “A life was taken,” community activist Anthony Jimenez, who heads a group called Police Our Police, reminded the El Cajon City Council earlier this month. But the officers involved can also experience a variety of short- and long-term effects, research shows, including appetite loss, sleep disruption, nausea and fatigue.

“For a while,” says L.A. Councilman Mike Bonin, “I was teetering on the edge of homelessness. There were a few nights when I slept on the beach, and more than a few nights when I slept in my car or bounced between friends' couches. “I have a sense of how easy it is to go from being housed to un-housed, and a sense of how easy it is to go from sort of teetering on the edge to falling into the abyss.” Bonin says he was addicted to alcohol for many years, then crystal meth. About 22 years ago, he managed to push the poison away.
