Suspected Palm Springs cop killer to face death penalty, authorities say
Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a man charged with fatally shooting two officers in Palm Springs earlier this month, authorities said.  The Riverside County District Attorney on Wednesday announced his intention to seek the death penalty against 26-year-old John Felix.

LA County Sheriff's Sergeant Who Died After Crash Had Suffered Heart Attack: Coroner
A 47-year-old sheriff's sergeant who died after his patrol car crashed in Compton had suffered a heart attack, the coroner's office reported Wednesday. The crash occurred around 5:20 a.m. Monday at Myrrh Street and Willowbrook Avenue. Sgt. Al Lopez, a 26-year veteran of the department, died at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, according to the sheriff's department.

Few California voters likely know much, if anything, about the state Board of Parole Hearings — from the qualifications of the 12 commissioners to their success in opening the prison gates for only those who can safely return to the streets. Intoxicated gang member shot in North Hollywood
A man was shot in a hand today in North Hollywood, police said. Responding officers found the victim around 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of Burbank Boulevard and Vineland Avenue. The victim, a known gang member, was intoxicated and uncooperative, according to Los Angeles police, so no suspect information was received from him. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injury.

Suspect Arrested In Wilmington Shooting Near Banning High School
A suspect was arrested Wednesday morning for a shooting in Wilmington that killed an 18-year-old and left two other teens wounded. Authorities described the suspect as a male juvenile. His name has not been released. The shooting happened near Banning High School around 3:12 p.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Broad Avenue. Police believe the shooting is gang-related. Police said the deceased man was shot in the chest.

Mother Pleads for Witnesses 10 Months After Son Killed in Hit-and-Run
Robert Ryan, who was an aspiring model in Hollywood's LGBT community, was killed last year by a hit-and-run driver -- but investigators still have no suspects and very few clues.  Now, his mother is pleading for witnesses to come forward -- alongside a $50,000 reward -- with further information that could lead to the arrest of Robert Ryan's killer. The Los Angeles Police Department released a photo of Robert standing behind a DJ at Lure Nightclub, taken just hours before his death. Detectives are hoping to talking with the other people in the photo to see if they might have witnessed the accident or can help give investigators a timeline of Robert's night.

Owner Of Burglarized Vacation Rental In Hollywood Hills Learns Big Lesson
The owner of a vacation rental in Hollywood Hills said he learned a big lesson after his house with four bedrooms and four bathrooms was ransacked. According to Rudi Polak, when he listed his 2,866-square-foot property online for rent, he unknowingly advertised all his valuables shown on the photos depicting each room. He even included a calendar indicating when no one was home.

Man Shot by Police in Echo Park After Bar Fight Charged With Assault
A Los Angeles man was charged with assault with a firearm Wednesday following an Echo Park altercation during which he allegedly pulled out a gun. Andres Ramirez, 25, also faces one count of possession of a firearm by a felon with two priors, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The charges come after a fight Sunday at The Short Stop, a bar popular among Dodgers fans, that began after Ramirez and nine other men approached a group of three men and claimed gang territory, officials said.

No Jail Time For Coolio After Plea Deal On LAX Firearm Charge
Rapper Coolio has been sentenced to probation and community service after pleading guilty to bringing a concealed firearm to Los Angeles International Airport last month. The rapper, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey, entered the plea during a court appearance Wednesday. District attorney's spokesman Ricardo Santiago says the rapper was sentenced to three years of supervised probation and 45 days of community service.

'Dream Come True': Officers Build Mini Police Car to Fit Around Boy's Wheelchair
A young boy's Halloween hopes came true Tuesday thanks to two officers with the Ontario Police Department and a civilian. The three men constructed a mini police car — crafted with cardboard and wood — to place around the boy's wheelchair just in time for Halloween. The 5-year-old, Brayden Dieringer, was diagnosed with Perthes disease, a rare childhood condition in 2015.

State trooper struck by vehicle on upstate NY road dies
New York State Police say a trooper has died after he was hit by a vehicle on an upstate road while on duty near a state police station. Maj. William Keeler says 55-year-old Trooper Timothy Pratt had stopped his patrol vehicle around 6:15 a.m. Wednesday to check out a tractor-trailer parked in the median of the road. Keeler says the trooper was hit by a car after he stepped out of his cruiser.

2 accused of shooting at, trying to run down North Carolina deputy
Two men were charged with attempted first-degree murder and authorities were looking for a third man who they said was involved in shooting at a Johnston County sheriff's deputy during a car chase and then speeding toward her in their car while she was on foot. The deputy was unhurt, sheriff's spokeswoman Tammy Amaon said. She fired at the car, which she had chased into a cul-de-sac, and it crashed and the suspects jumped out, Amaon said.

How LA leaders plan to make the city more business-friendly
A city infamous for being unfriendly toward business voted Wednesday to create a “concierge” service to help Los Angeles businesses and boost job creation. After 15 months of talks with business groups, the City Council voted 13-0 to enact a sweeping citywide job creation plan. Its dozens of reforms include a one-stop service to assist businesses, an open door at City Hall for business input, more streamlined regulations, business incentive zones and up to 5,000 new city jobs for workers hailing from poorer neighborhoods.

Los Angeles Looks To Open Dialogue On Race With New Survey
Members of the Los Angeles City Council launched a new pilot program to open dialogue about race. "embRACE LA" asks Angelenos to weigh in on issues of race, ethnicity and diversity through an online survey. The survey will end in December 2016, and the city's Human Relations Commission will report on its findings.

What the LADWP's Reform Plan Could Mean for Customers
A new ballot measure, if approved by voters in November, would give the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's governing board more control over contracts and hiring, among other areas. If passed, the measure would affect the DWP's 3.9 million customers in five different ways, NBC4's media partner KPCC reports.
