Man accused of killing Modoc sheriff's deputy could face death penalty
A man accused of killing a Modoc County sheriff's deputy has been charged with murder and could face the death penalty, authorities said. Jack Lee Breiner, 47, faces one count of willful, deliberate and premeditated murder for the death of Deputy Jack Hopkins, one count of attempted murder for shooting at Modoc Sheriff Mike Poindexter and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Modoc County district attorney's office. The charges carry the special-circumstance allegation of intentionally killing a peace officer while he was engaged in the performance of his duties.

LAPD Officers Coach South LA Youth Football Team While On Duty
There are some Los Angeles Police Department officers who not only protect lives around the city, but are taking the time to coach the Watts Bears, a football team made up of young boys who live in Watts. The officers do the coaching while on duty. The four officers wanted to start a mentoring program with a sports element and that's how the Watts Bears were developed.

LAPD Pursue 2 Men in South L.A. After Reports of Assault
Los Angeles police pursued a white vehicle in South Los Angeles on Thursday after reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. The pursuit began near Vermont Avenue and 52nd Street around 7:45 a.m. The driver stopped on the west side of Hoover Avenue and 57th Street where authorities took him and another man into custody without incident. An object was thrown from the window of the car during the pursuit.

Records Reveal Echo Park Boy Was Kept in Closets for 3 Years Before Death
For three years, the young boy was hidden in locked closets, sedated by liquid sleeping aids allegedly given to him by his mother. When people asked Veronica Aguilar where her son was, she told them he had been placed in an institution in Mexico, according to court records. Only her three other children two of whom slept on a bed just outside the closet door knew the truth, and they said they were forbidden by the mother from saying anything, authorities say.

Man wanted for vandalizing Trump's star on Walk of Fame arrested by LAPD
The man who admitted vandalizing Donald Trump's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a crime he says was committed as an act of protest against the Republican presidential candidate's alleged mistreatment of women, was arrested Thursday, police said. James Otis was arrested by Los Angeles Police Department detectives before he got a chance to carry out his plan to hold a 9:30 a.m. news conference today at the site of Trump's star at 6801 Hollywood Blvd. with his
attorney.

Man charged in North Hollywood toddler death
Felony charges have been filed against an apparently drug-crazed man accused of stabbing his toddler to death and setting their North Hollywood apartment on fire last Friday, prosecutors said Thursday. Noe Torres, 48, is facing charges of murder, assault on a child causing death and arson, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Arraignment is pending because he remains in the hospital for injuries sustained that day.

Man fatally shot by security guard at Sylmar grocery store ID'd
Authorities Thursday identified a man who was fatally shot by a security guard at a Sylmar grocery store after allegedly threatening employees with a shard of glass.
The shooting was reported about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 13700 block of Foothill Boulevard, said Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section. Joshua Kistler, 32, of Palmdale died at the scene.

Manhattan Beach Woman With Alzheimers Missing Since Trip to LACMA 2 Weeks Ago; Public's Help Sought
The family of a 55-year-old Manhattan Beach woman with early-onset Alzheimers is asking the public's help in locating her. Nancy Paulikas was last seen around by her family around 2:45 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Security footage showed her at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and McCarthy Vista heading west around 15 minutes later, authorities said, but that is the last sign of her.

Teen death in Sun Valley: No seat belt?
A 17-year-old girl who may not have been wearing a seat belt was killed and three other people were injured when their vehicle crashed and rolled over in Sun Valley, police said Friday. The girl, whose name was not immediately released, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. There was no official word is she had been wearing a seat belt.

Study Finds Rise In Distracted Drivers, Pedestrians Near Schools
Schools are supposed to be safe places for kids, but a new study found that school zones are becoming increasingly dangerous. The study from Safe Kids Worldwide looked at the actions of almost 100,000 students and drivers in school zones and found sharp increases in distracted walking and unsafe street crossing, resulting in more pedestrian injuries and deaths in those areas. More than five teens were killed every week walking to and from school last year, according to the study.

More Than 2 Tons Of Cocaine Seized From Submarine
A U.S. Coast Guard crew based out of California seized more than 5,600 pounds of cocaine from a submarine in the Pacific Ocean last month, authorities said Thursday. The crew intercepted the self-propelled semi-submersible (SPSS) which authorities say was laden with more than $73 million worth of cocaine off the Central America coast Sept. 6. Five suspected drug smugglers were also apprehended, officials said.

Manson Follower 'Tex' Watson Denied Parole in California
California parole officials recommended Thursday that Charles "Tex" Watson, the self-described right-hand man of murderous cult leader Charles Manson, should remain in prison 47 years after he helped plan and carry out the slayings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people. Watson's 17th parole hearing was held at Mule Creek State Prison, near Sacramento. He can seek parole again in five years.

Jury acquits leaders of Ore. standoff of federal charges
A jury delivered an extraordinary blow to the government Thursday in a long-running battle over the use of public lands when it acquitted all seven defendants involved in the armed occupation of a national wildlife refuge in rural southeastern Oregon. Tumult erupted in the courtroom after the verdicts were read when an attorney for group leader Ammon Bundy demanded his client be immediately released, repeatedly yelling at the judge. U.S. marshals tackled attorney Marcus Mumford to the ground, used a stun gun on him several times and arrested him.

City Controller Ron Galperin on Thursday released PropertyPanel.LA, the most sweeping map ever made of city properties. He also called upon city officials to hire an asset manager to oversee 9,000 holdings. Now everyone can know what we all own a piece of, said Galperin, in a statement. The extent of the holdings revealed by this map shows that we as a City have the opportunity to engage in widespread economic and community development, as well as to generate revenue for much-needed city services.

The LA84 Foundation held a youth sports summit on Thursday at the JW Marriott LA LIVE, and Mayor Eric Garcetti, trying to bring the 2024 Olympic Games to Los Angeles, made it clear he understands the importance of youth sports in the development of young men and young women. "I literally wouldn't be here without youth sports," Garcetti said. "Encino Little League, playing basketball, I wrestled _ I did things for me that really shaped who I am."
