Ky. detective killed by drunk driver
Two pedestrians — including a Louisville police officer — were killed early Saturday when police say they were hit by a drunken driver on South Upper Street in Lexington. Louisville police identified the officer as Detective Jason Schweitzer. The Fayette County coroner's office identified the other victim as Timothy Moore, 56, of Lexington, a University of Kentucky employee.

Fresno sheriff's deputy dies after being 'accidentally shot' on duty
A Fresno County sheriff's deputy died Monday after he was “accidentally shot” while on duty in a business park near Fresno's Yosemite International Airport, authorities said. The shooting occurred just before 4 p.m., when the deputy was working near Clinton and Winery Avenues, according to Tony Botti, a spokesman for the Fresno County sheriff's office.

Dangerous Felons Would Be Released Under Prop. 57
Prop. 57 pushes the criminal justice pendulum too far in favor of dangerous felons. Inaptly described as a “public safety” measure, Prop. 57 aims to save taxpayers money by granting early parole for dangerous felons. However, the voters are being misled by the campaign in favor of Prop. 57.

Stabbing Victim Was ‘Running for Her Life' Before Deputy, Guard Fatally Shot Attacker at Chatsworth Courthouse: Witness
A sheriff's deputy and a courthouse security guard opened fire on a man who was seen stabbing his estranged wife outside the courthouse in Chatsworth just after noon Monday, authorities said. The man and woman were both hospitalized, with the former being pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police Hunt Suspects In Fatal Stabbing Outside Flyer Party In Pacoima
Valley Bureau Homicide Detectives with the LAPD are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred outside a party in Pacoima. On Saturday, around 2:20 a.m., Foothill Area patrol officers responded to a radio call of a possible “Ambulance Cutting, Man Down,” in the 12400 block of Bernadette Street in Pacoima.

Stolen vehicle suspect in custody after pursuit through Van Nuys area
A male suspect in a stolen car drove at high speed and the wrong way as he tried to elude pursuing police in the San Fernando Valley, but the chase ended when the vehicle crashed head-on into a patrol car as a swarm of officers tried to box in the driver in a Van Nuys neighborhood.

Man Fatally Shot While Driving In South Los Angeles; Shooter At Large
A man in his 20s was shot to death while driving early Monday morning in the Manchester Square neighborhood of South Los Angeles, authorities said.  The motorist's vehicle crashed after the shooting, which was reported at about 3:30 a.m. in the area of 81st Street and Western Avenue, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Division said.

Man Struck and Killed in Sylmar Hit-and-Run Crash: LAPD
A man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver after getting out of his pickup, which was having mechanical issues, in Sylmar Monday morning, officials said. The driver then began walking south along Foothill Boulevard when he was fatally struck about 7 a.m. by another driver near the bike lane, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Chief Beck on the mend from off-road motorcycling; No surgery needed
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck received some good news Monday — he won't need surgery after fracturing his pelvis and cracking some ribs over the weekend while riding an off-road motorcycle in the Tehachapi Mountains with a group of friends. Beck fell Saturday on a rocky trail and broke his pelvis but was able to ride his dirt bike back to his truck and drive home.

Woman gets 21 years in prison for Hollywood fight
A woman shot by police after pointing a gun during a fight in a Hollywood parking structure was sentenced Monday to 21 years in prison. Diamond Shirley Vargas, 49, of Los Angeles was convicted of one felony count of assault with a firearm. Jurors deadlocked on five identical counts. Vargas was shot in the leg following a confrontation on Dec. 26, 2014, in the parking structure of the Hollywood & Highland center. Police were called to the scene after a security officer reported the fight.

Eleven years for man who killed fellow transient outside fast-food restaurant
One of two homeless men convicted in the beating and stomping death of a fellow transient outside a fast-food restaurant in downtown Los Angeles was sentenced Monday to 11 years in prison. Derek Miller, 31, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the Feb. 7, 2015, death of Derrick Hamilton. Co-defendant Charles Allender, 42, was charged along with Miller and convicted of second-degree murder following a trial. He is set to be sentenced Dec. 7 and is facing 37 years to life in prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Why ex-Sheriff Lee Baca's jail corruption trial will stay in LA County
Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca will be tried in Los Angeles County in December in connection with a jail corruption case after a federal judge denied his request Monday to hold the trial outside the area. U.S. District Court Judge Percy Anderson denied the motion to change the venue by Baca's attorneys, who argued that thousands of news stories about the high-profile case this year have saturated the public to the point Baca could not get a fair trial in Los Angeles County.

Proposal calls for officers who took their own lives to be honored on Australia's LODD wall
New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has proposed a plan to include officers who have taken their own lives on the Wall of Remembrance in Sydney. The names of police officers who have died in the line of duty are added to the wall annually, ABC Australia reported. But currently, the cases of suicide are excluded. The plan was proposed at a meeting of the state and territory police commissioners last week, according to the publication.

DA reviewing contributions allegedly linked to developer of Harbor Gateway complex
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office Monday opened a review of campaign contributions alleged to be linked to the developer of a $72 million apartment complex in Harbor Gateway. Donors identified in a Los Angeles Times investigation as having such ties gave more than $600,000 in campaign funding to Mayor Eric Garcetti, then- councilwoman Janice Hahn and several other members of the Los Angeles City Council.

LA may have 2 competing pot tax measures on March ballot
With the state possibly on the verge of legalizing recreational marijuana, two competing initiatives to regulate and tax marijuana in the city of Los Angeles may be headed for the March 2017 ballot. The L.A. city council is scheduled to vote on the two versions on Tuesday.  Why two? The short answer is, there's a marijuana industry version and a city version.

LA leaders explore replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day
Representatives of Italian American and other groups went to Los Angeles City Hall Monday to voice their opposition to a proposal to replace Columbus Day with a city holiday celebrating Native Americans instead of European explorer Christopher Columbus. The Los Angeles City Council is set to take up a Human Relations Commission recommendation to have the city join several others around the country in swapping out Columbus Day for a new holiday known as Indigenous Peoples Day.

Officials have spent billions of dollars to build more than 100 miles of passenger rail to connect the far-flung edges of Los Angeles County, from Azusa to Santa Monica, and North Hollywood to Long Beach.
