Miami motorcycle cop dead, 2 others critical after multi-vehicle crash
A veteran Miami traffic cop less than two years from retirement was killed Tuesday when an SUV rear-ended his motorcycle in a left-turn lane, setting off a violent chain reaction that damaged five other cars, left two other people in critical condition and sent 11 people to the hospital.

Florida deputy killed in collision with logging truck
A Florida community is in mourning after a Taylor County sheriff's deputy was killed Monday morning in a car crash. Deputy Scott Williams was driving his patrol car when he collided with the back of a logging truck, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. He was taken to a hospital where he later died due to his injuries.

LAPD cites better training in use-of-force, but ‘not done' improving
The Los?Angeles Police Department has improved its training in use-of-force de-escalation tactics from previous decades, officials said at a Police Commission meeting on Tuesday. An average of 61?officer-involved shootings were reported from 1986 to 1995 while the number decreased to 44?shootings from 2006-2015, officials said, citing a 10-year overview of use-of-force investigations, policy and training.

Man Fatally Stabbed His Coworker's 3-Year-Old Daughter at DTLA Garment Factory, LAPD Says
In an unprovoked attack with no known motive, a 34-year-old man fatally stabbed a coworker's 3-year-old child at the downtown Los Angeles garment factory where he and the girl's mother worked together, police said Tuesday. The man, identified as Ricardo Augusto Utuy, was booked on suspicion of murder in the little girl's death.

Man Found Shot To Death In Back Of Van In Los Angeles
A homicide investigation was underway after a man was found shot to death in the back of a van in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The man's body was found around 8:10 a.m. in the 3500 block of Emery Street. Los Angeles police said employees at a nearby business called 911 when they saw the white Chevrolet Astro Van and looked inside to see a man slumped over in the back.

Pedophile priest sentenced and defrocked, but still working with kids
A former Roman Catholic priest was convicted and sent to prison for molesting children during a period lasting many years. Gina Silva reports that the priest is not only out of prison, but back in church pretending to still be a man of the cloth.

Two Men Arrested, Charged With Murder After Fatal Attack Outside Hollywood Nightclub
Two men were charged with murder on Tuesday in connection with a beating that left a man dead outside of a Hollywood nightclub. Dietrich Canterberry, 34, and Cordell Shields, 35, were each charged with one count of murder. Shields also faces one count each of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury and battery.

Parents of Ezell Ford, who was fatally shot by LAPD officers, settle lawsuit with city
The parents of Ezell Ford, a mentally ill man who was fatally shot by Los Angeles police officers in 2014, have settled their wrongful death and state civil rights lawsuit with the city of L.A., according to court papers. Attorneys for Ford's parents and the city reached the tentative settlement Oct. 21, according to an order filed by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rita Miller. The terms of the agreement were not publicly disclosed, according to court papers.

Authorities identify man killed by deputy after stabbing woman outside Chatsworth courthouse
Los Angeles County coroner's officials Tuesday identified a man who stabbed a woman outside of a courthouse in Chatsworth before being fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy. Jose Armando Cueva, 55, was shot once in the upper body and was taken to a local hospital where he later died, coroner's officials said.

McLaren Totaled in Multivehicle Crash in Woodland Hills; 2 Hospitalized
A multivehicle crash in Woodland Hills left two people hospitalized and a green McLaren sports car destroyed Tuesday evening.The crash was reported at 4:48 p.m. just outside of Hale Charter Academy, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im.

Los Angeles jail inmate found dead in cell
Los Angeles police are investigating the death of a male inmate found in his jail cell early Tuesday, authorities said. A 36-year-old man was found dead at 9:52 a.m. in a cell at the LAPD's 77th Street Community Police Station jail, said Officer Drake Madison, a spokesman for the department.

Pursuit Driver Ditches Vehicle, Runs Into LA River Wash
A driver wanted for reckless driving and speeding was arrested after he ditched his vehicle and ran into the Los Angeles River wash Monday night in Universal City. The pursuit started at around 11:15 p.m. on the northbound 101 Freeway near Fountain Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Man who allegedly pushed mom from 2nd-story window arraigned on murder charge
A man who allegedly shoved his mother out of a second-story window during an argument at their Van Nuys apartment, then continued to attack her on the ground in front of bystanders, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a murder charge. Fernando Vargas, 41, is charged in the Oct. 10 death of his 70-year-old mother, Carlota. Vargas was allegedly arguing with his mother when he pushed her out of the window about 3 that morning.

LAX Observes Moment Of Silence For Slain TSA Officer
A moment of silence was observed at Los Angeles International Airport Tuesday, marking the third anniversary of the shooting death of a Transportation Security Administration officer. The silent salute to TSA Officer Gerardo Hernandez was held at 9:20 a.m., according to airport police.

Questions Remain 3 Years After Woman's Body Was Found Inside LA Hotel's Rooftop Water Tank
More than three years after a young woman's body was found inside a water tank on the roof of a downtown Los Angeles hotel, the mystery surrounding her death has only grown. Investigators closed the case in 2013, determining that Elisa Lam, a 21-year-old tourist from Canada, had died of an accidental drowning. But some people continue to suspect foul play. The case began as a search for a missing person. Lam was reported missing from the former Cecil Hotel on Jan. 26, 2013.

Man Killed In Drive-By Shooting In East Los Angeles
A 25-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting in East Los Angeles Monday night. Authorities said a call came in around 7:31 p.m. regarding a shooting in the 500 block of Williamson Avenue. When authorities arrived, they found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper body. The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

New Law Aims for Police Accountability in Use of Force Cases
A new law aimed at holding police accountable for use of force incidents has raised concerns among both police departments and civil rights groups. California Assembly Bill 71 requires police departments to submit annual data of their use of force, from shootings to altercations resulting in great bodily harm, and makes the records accessible to the public.

Oakland Sergeant Says Police Chief, Mayor Retaliated Against Him For Investigating Cop Who May Have Killed Wife
Sgt. James "Mike" Gantt, a veteran Oakland homicide investigator, filed a claim  against the City of Oakland today alleging that top officials retaliated against him because he broke ranks with the department during the investigation of a rookie cop, Brendan O'Brien, who he suspected of killing his wife.

Memorial for sheriff's sergeant who died of heart attack on duty
A memorial service will be held in San Dimas Wednesday for sheriff's Sgt. Al Lopez, who died of a heart attack Oct. 24 while on duty in Compton. Sheriff Jim McDonnell is expected to be among the mourners who will gather for the 11 a.m. service at Christ's Church of  the Valley, 1404 West Covina Blvd. Following the service, which will take about two hours, interment will take place at Oakdale Mortuary, 1401 S. Grand Ave., in Glendora.

LA City Council Approves Frank Gehry-Designed Sunset Strip Project
The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday approved a controversial mixed-use project designed by famed architect Frank Gehry that will replace an existing strip mall on the eastern end of the Sunset Strip. The project at 8150 Sunset Blvd., near Crescent Heights Boulevard and the border with West Hollywood, will replace a shopping center whose tenants include a bank, fast-food restaurants, a dry cleaner and an ice cream shop.

LADWP workers boost salaries with overtime, group says
For the second year in a row, a Los?Angeles Department of Water and Power supervisor topped the list of public employees who boosted their salaries with hefty overtime pay, a public sector compensation monitoring group said Tuesday. Last year, LADWP Electric Distribution Mechanic Supervisor Joseph Strafford earned $216,741 in overtime pay, boosting his annual earnings to $394,549, the highest of any special district worker surveyed, according to Transparent California, which compiles a database of public sector compensation and is a project of the Nevada Policy Research Institute, a nonpartisan, free-market think tank.
