Jump in assaults on California police officers alarms police, communities
Nine police officers have died in the line of duty so far this year in California, five of them since October. The total is not unusual – California loses 10 officers per year on average, according to the Attorney General – but the concentration of killings jammed into just a few weeks is unnerving to many on all sides of the thin blue line. More disturbing, perhaps, is the jump in assaults on police officers. Such attacks can include anything from armed ambush, similar to the one that killed two officers in Iowa on Wednesday, to a push or punch from a recalcitrant suspect.

NYPD sergeant fatally shot, another wounded in gun battle with suspect
A police sergeant was shot and killed and a second one was wounded Friday in a gunfight on a street with an armed man who had broken into his estranged wife's home, officials said. The gunman also was killed in the exchange of shots that took the life of Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, a 19-year veteran of the New York Police Department and the father of two young children. "The city is in mourning, and the family of the NYPD is in mourning," Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference held at a Bronx hospital.

One Peach County deputy dead after shooting
A dispute between neighbors led to a shooting Sunday that left one Peach County deputy dead and another seriously wounded. The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. west of Byron. One of the deputies was taken to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, in Macon, and the other was rushed to the Medical Center of Peach County.

Utah officer fatally struck by car during pursuit
A suburban Salt Lake City police officer was killed Sunday when authorities say he was struck by people fleeing in a stolen vehicle. West Valley City police Officer Cody Brotherson was deploying tire spikes when he was hit, authorities said. He is the first officer to die in the line of duty since the department formed in 1980.

Opponents of Prop 57 hold rally in downtown LA
The family of slain Lancaster sheriff's Sgt. Steve Owens joined other members of law enforcement and opponents of Proposition 57 for a rally in downtown LA Saturday. Opponents say the proposition poses a clear danger to the public and to officers. The crowd included members of the law enforcement community and families of recently slain officers in Lancaster and Palm Springs. Opponents say this measure would let more criminals out of jail and lead to more police officer deaths.

LAPD officers credited with saving rapper's life
Pioneering '80s rapper Kurtis Blow credited four Los Angeles police officers today with saving his life by performing CPR when he collapsed at a bus stop near the Topanga Mall in Canoga Park last Saturday. ``I died and these officers saved my life," said the 57-year-old Harlem-born rapper and record producer, whose real name is Kurtis Walker.

Body of missing Calif. police explorer found bludgeoned, stabbed and burned
A 21-year-old volunteer with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office missing since Wednesday was found dead at an East Oakland park, her body bludgeoned, stabbed and burned almost beyond recognition, authorities said Friday. Karla Ramirez-Segoviano vanished Wednesday evening in San Leandro. Her body — which police said was burned so badly the coroner had trouble lifting a fingerprint — was discovered around noon Thursday at Arroyo Viejo Park.

3 rapes have been reported at CSUN since October — and students want answers
Three rapes have reportedly happened over five weeks at Cal?State Northridge dorms, prompting administrators and police to consider offering educational safety programs at the campus and leaving some students to ask why they weren't notified sooner.

Woman, 2 Kids Struck By Car In Westlake District, LAPD Says
A woman and two children were struck by a car in the Westlake District on Friday, Los Angeles police said. The crash happened shortly before 8 a.m. near the intersection of James M. Wood Boulevard and Bonnie Brae Street. The woman and the children were transported from the scene. LAPD officials said the woman, 46, and the kids, ages 6 and 9, only suffered minor injuries.

Woman struck, killed while crossing South LA street
A woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday as she was crossing a street in South Los Angeles. The woman was later identified as Gevon Lisk, 39, according to Lt. Dave Smith of the coroner's office. The crash was reported at 1:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of Manchester Boulevard where the woman was crossing the street on foot, possibly jaywalking, police said.

Police seek hit-and-run driver who ran over 72-year-old woman in Van Nuys
Los Angeles police are calling on the public to help them find the driver of a car that ran over a 72-year-old woman in a Van Nuys parking lot, then fled the scene, leaving the victim “severely injured.” The incident happened on Oct. 17 in a shopping center in the 15000 block of Sherman Way, according to a release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck made his first public appearance Saturday since breaking his pelvis last weekend. Beck attended the Los Angeles Police Foundation dinner honoring Rams owner Stan Kroenke. The dinner and fundraising event– the True Blue Cocktail Gala —  was held in Elysian Park.

Erika Ward and Mo Lewis, two sisters of a man tragically killed while walking home in North Hollywood late last year, flew from across the country to find answers for their brother's unsolved murder. "He had become somewhat estranged from the family, came out here kind of doing his own thing and not really in contact too much," Ward said.

2 dozen emergency calls reported at LA Rams home game
Two dozen emergency medical calls were reported at the Los Angeles Rams' game in South Los Angeles on Sunday that attracted an estimated 77,000 people, Los Angeles fire officials said. The Los Angeles Fire Department handled 5 emergency medical services calls, including a patient that had to be taken to an area hospital, according to an LAFD alert. A private ambulance company reported 19 emergency medical calls, with three patients requiring transport, according to the fire department.

New York real estate heir Robert Durst arrived in Los Angeles on Friday and will be arraigned next week on a murder charge in the 2000 slaying of his friend Susan Berman, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said.

Former Playboy Playmate Charged After Allegedly Body-Shaming Woman Photographed At La Gym
Prosecutors filed a criminal charge against a former Playboy playmate accused of secretly photographing a nude 70-year-old woman in a gym shower and posting the image on social media. Dani Mathers, 29, faces one count of invasion of privacy, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office announced in a news release Friday.

Boyle Heights activists protest art galleries, gentrification
The Nicodim gallery operated in Chinatown and then Culver City before moving to Boyle Heights in early 2015. But to anti-gentrification activists, the Nicodims are the face of unwanted change. Last month, someone scrawled an obscene reference to “white art” on the gallery's metal screen door. On Saturday morning, members of the Boyle Heights Alliance Against Artwashing and Displacement held a news conference on the steps of the Nicodim gallery. They are incensed by the Los Angeles Police Department's decision to investigate the graffiti as a hate crime.

Councilman Seeks To Shut Down Sylmar Landfill Amid Longstanding Odor Complaints From Residents
Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch Englander is moving forward with plans to attempt to shut down the Sunshine Canyon landfill in Sylmar after thousands of odor complaints from nearby homeowners in recent years. Since 2009, there have been more than 9,000 complaints from Granada Hills residents about the landfill, according to Englander.

Mayor Calls For Change To L.A. Zoo's Emergency Response Policy After CBS2 Investigation
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said he will call for changes to the way medical emergencies are handled at the L.A. Zoo following a CBS2 investigation into an incident that left a toddler with severe brain damage. “Bureaucracy should never get in the way of saving a life,” the mayor said Friday. “I'm going to talk to the zoo director and make sure that when there is an emergency, first thing that's done before the assessment, call 911 – better safe than sorry.”
