LAPD Officer Meets Fullerton Officers Who Saved His Life
More than two months after an crash sent him to the hospital in grave condition, a rookie Los Angeles police officer put his uniform back on. It's a day 25-year-old Nicholas Wiltz said he's been looking forward to. "Feel part of that family again, because it really is a family, being a police officer, it's an amazing feeling," Wiltz said.

Murdered LA deputy honored
A murdered Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy will be honored Tuesday when a sign designating the interchange of the San Bernardino (10) and Long Beach (710) freeways in memory of Thomas H. Pohlman will be unveiled. Sheriff Jim McDonnell, Pohlman's widow, Jenny Liepitz and children Bryan Pohlman and Kelly Padilla-Pohlman are scheduled to attend the 1 p.m. ceremony at Biscailuz Center Training Academy in East Los Angeles.

Man Locked Inside Griffith Park Arrested for Suspected DUI After Crashing Into Patrol Vehicle; 2 Officers Transported to Hospital: LAPD
Two officers were transported to a local hospital with neck and back pain after their patrol vehicle was T-boned by a suspected drunk driver in Griffith Park early Sunday morning, police said. The two-man unit was responding to a call about someone locked inside the park, and while searching for the individual another vehicle suddenly collided into theirs, according to Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Teresa Anderson.

LAPD, sheriff's department to patrol polling places on Election Day
The Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will have extra patrols near polling places on Election Day, authorities said Monday. Election Day is a “high profile community event” that calls for extra attention from the LAPD, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Jack Richter. Although he noted the department's staffing will be no different than previous elections, unless patrol officers come across something unusual.

Man Dies After Road Rage Fight on Van Nuys Street; Public's Help Sought in Identifying Suspect
The Los Angeles Police Department asked for the public's help in their search for a suspect accused in a fatal road rage fight in Van Nuys over the weekend that left a man dead. On Sunday about 9:50 p.m., officers responded to the 7400 block of Sepulveda Boulevard and found a man lying on the ground, with his passenger standing nearby, the LAPD said in a news release Monday.

Undercover LAPD officers shoot and wound man near MacArthur Park; 2 arrested
A confrontation on Monday between undercover Los Angeles police officers and two men led to police opening fire and wounding one of the men in the arm, authorities said. The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. near 8th and Alvarado streets in the Westlake neighborhood, LAPD Officer Mike Lopez said.

Police Search for Gunman Who Shot, Injured 2 in Tarzana
Police are searching for a gunman who shot and injured two men outside a car wash in Tarzana on Monday. The suspect ran into a residential area after firing as many as five rounds, according to witnesses. Two men were arguing with another man on the street just after 11 a.m. at Reseda and Bessemer Street, police said.

Police seek suspect in Van Nuys murder, carjacking
A 37-year-old man was killed in Van Nuys on Sunday and police are looking for a man wanted in connection to the death, who rode a bike and stole the victim's car. The incident was reported around 9:50 p.m. Sunday when Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a radio call for “robbery/grand theft auto” on the 7400 block of Sepulveda Boulevard in Van Nuys. The officers found a man lying on the ground and a witness next to him. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the man to a local hospital, where he died.

Man Fatally Struck By Vehicle While Walking In Van Nuys
A man was fatally struck by a vehicle Tuesday as he crossed a street in Van Nuys. The incident was reported just before 2 a.m. near Vanowen Street and Sepulveda Boulevard, according to police. Upon their arrival, authorities pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Robert Durst pleads not guilty to 2000 murder in LA court
A frail looking Robert Durst was rolled into the courtroom Monday in a wheelchair wearing a neck-brace. It was his first opportunity to go before the Los Angeles judge who will likely preside over his murder trial. Durst, wearing a blue and white striped shirt and glasses, took a moment to proclaim his innocence in open court.

Paul Ciancia, LAX Gunman Who Targeted TSA Officers, Sentenced to Life in Prison
The gunman whose 2013 rampage at Los Angeles International Airport left a Transportation Security Administration officer dead and three others injured was sentenced Monday to life in prison for the premeditated, deadly attack in which he targeted federal officers. Paul Ciancia, 26, had pleaded guilty to murder and other charges earlier this year as part of a deal that saw federal prosecutors withdraw their decision to seek the death penalty for the shootings at the airport's bustling Terminal 3.

Father Pleads Not Guilty in Stabbing Death of Toddler, Arson
A father accused of stabbing his toddler to death and setting their North Hollywood apartment ablaze pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of murder, assault on a child causing death and arson. Noe Torres' arraignment was delayed until this morning because he was hospitalized following the Oct. 21 fire. The 48-year-old defendant is due back in court Dec. 6, when a date is expected to be set for a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

LA-based gangmember convicted in 2013 San Bernardino homicide
A member of a Los Angeles street gang accused of murdering a San Bernardino gang member learned his fate Wednesday. Victor Angulo, 42, of San Bernardino was found guilty of second degree murder in the 2013 shooting death of Angel Cortez, 21, of San Bernardino. San Bernardino police responded to the home in the 200 block of East 11th Street May 22, 2013. In the backyard, detectives found Cortez's decomposing body at the bottom of a 4-foot deep hole.

Felon shoots, stabs maintenance worker to death, facing 50 years
A 26-year-old felon was convicted Monday of first-degree murder in the shooting and stabbing death of a maintenance worker near a Target store parking lot in Van Nuys. Jurors deliberated about an hour before finding Erick Renteria guilty of the murder charge and a firearm possession count, and also found true an allegation that he personally used a handgun causing great bodily injury.

Man Charged With Murder In Death Of Georgia Deputy
Authorities have charged a 57-year-old Georgia man with killing a sheriff's deputy and critically wounding another. Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge J.T. Ricketson said Monday that Ralph Stanley Elrod faces a murder charge and four counts of aggravated assault on a police officer following the Sunday afternoon attack on 41-year-old Sgt. Patrick Sondron, who was killed, and Deputy Daryl Smallwood near Byron, about 16 miles southwest of Macon.

2 Mo. officers shot, suspect in custody
Two police officers suffered non-life-threatening wounds when they were hit in the face with bird shot near Fox Elementary School on Friday afternoon. Arnold police Detective Lt. James Jones said a man, 52, was taken into custody after the shooting, which happened about 2:38 p.m. as officers were responding to a call for a “disturbance” in the 2100 block of Plaza Drive at Jeffco Estates.

Mass. cops hospitalized after suspect throws heroin
Two officers were hospitalized Friday after a suspect being booked on drug charges threw an open bag of heroin at them.  According to WJBD radio, officers were searching Russell Pena's vehicle on suspicion of distributing heroin and cocaine. They discovered marijuana, cocaine and $1450 in cash on Pena and passenger Michael Lopes.

L.A. voters to decide on $1.2-billion bond for homeless housing
Los Angeles voters who persevere to the end of a busy ballot Tuesday will decide whether to tax the city's property owners to provide housing for the homeless.
Proposition HHH, the 26th item on the ballot, would authorize $1.2 billion in borrowing to accelerate the pace at which mostly nonprofit developers build permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless people. The bonds would be repaid by a new property tax averaging just under $10 for each $100,000 in assessed valuation over 29 years.

Wilshire Boulevard, once a mecca for drivers, is trying a different path. It could offer a blueprint for L.A.
Los Angeles built Wilshire Boulevard as a majestic path for the automobile, and perhaps no place reflected that grandeur more than the Miracle Mile. In its heyday, this stretch of Wilshire offered drivers wide roadways divided by palm tree-lined medians and ornate street lamps built around sculpted metal of svelte topless women. Back then, the Miracle Mile was one of L.A.'s top shopping destinations, with gleaming neon signs luring drivers to sprawling parking lots behind the streamline-designed stores.
