2 Detained After Torrance Officers Are Fired on in Wilmington; Bystander Struck: LAPD
Two people were detained after shots were fired at Torrance police officers and a bystander was struck by gunfire in Wilmington on Wednesday afternoon, according to LAPD. About 3 p.m., the Torrance police officers were were fired upon but not struck, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Sal Ramirez. It's not yet known if the officers were in their vehicle or on foot, he said. A bystander was struck by a bullet and was hospitalized with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, Ramirez said.

LAPD Asks for Help Finding L.A. Couple Who Never Returned From Weekend Desert Camping Trip
A Los Angeles couple last seen en route to a camping trip in the desert has gone missing, and LAPD on Wednesday asked for help finding them. Mariya Mitkova, 27, and Aaron Morganstein, 33, left Elysian Valley, also known as Frogtown, about 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, and have not been seen since, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Described as frequent campers, the couple was believed to have been bound for Joshua Tree National Park or the Imperial Sand Dunes, police said.

‘Porch pirates' beware: LAPD plans special holiday delivery for Valley thieves
With the holiday season upon us, police are urging residents not be become victims of any Grinch out there looking to nab valuables. In a news conference Wednesday at the Topanga community station, Los Angeles Police Department officials announced plans to crack down on “porch pirates” — thieves who swipe packages from residents' front doors. The next time a thief grabs a box off a porch, it could contain a GPS device so undercover officers can track the suspects and learn where they stash their stolen goods.

Neighbors Demand Action After I-Team Exposes Hollywood Tour Dangers
Neighbors and local business owners are challenging city and state leaders to address dangerous and deceitful behavior by Hollywood tour van operators. A town hall meeting held at the American Legion Hall Auditorium in Hollywood on Wednesday night came in response to an NBC4 I-Team undercover investigation that exposed some tour van operators driving recklessly in unsafely modified vehicles, and lying to unsuspecting tourists about the locations of celebrity homes.

Man Pleads Not Guilty in Shooting Deaths of Restaurant Owner, Customer
n 18-year-old reputed gang member pleaded not guilty Wednesday to double murder charges stemming from a shooting at a burger restaurant in a Harbor City strip mall that left two people dead, including the longtime owner of the eatery. Joey Alfred Mendoza is charged with two counts of murder stemming from the Oct. 12 shooting at Bob's Hamburgers that killed Charalambos Antonelos, 61, of San Pedro, and Louis Garcia, 23, of Wilmington. The alleged gunman, whose face was covered during the attack, was identified through surveillance video, witness statements and "gang intelligence," according to a statement released by the Los Angeles Police Department.

In a sentencing hearing on Tuesday, 54-year-old Shannah Tenner pleaded no contest for the unlawful use of a badge while stealing a man's pet poodle. After Tenner learned of an alleged dog abuse inside an apartment complex in Echo Park, she partnered with Jenny Smiley to steal Cesar Aguilar's dog Fanny. Initially, Los Angeles police searched for the two dog-nappers impersonating animal cruelty officers and issued an alert that garnered thousands of shares on social media.

Only 1 Protester Charged Out of More Than 450 Arrested in DTLA Anti-Trump Actions
Out of more than 450 protesters arrested in Los Angeles in last week's protests against the election of Donald Trump, only one person has been charged, authorities said Wednesday. The one individual being prosecuted was charged with and pleaded guilty to possession of brass knuckles, according to Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office.

Sentencing for ex ‘Bling Ring' defendant, second man in stalking case
A man previously convicted of the so-called “bling ring” burglaries of celebrities' homes is set to be sentenced Thursday for his guilty plea to a misdemeanor stalking charge. Nicholas Frank Prugo, 26, pleaded guilty Sept. 12 to a charge that he stalked West Hollywood esthetician Dawn DaLuise. Co-defendant Edward Robert Feinstein, 32, pleaded no contest to the same charge and is also set to be sentenced.

Ex-LA Sheriff Lee Baca mentally competent: Defense won't oppose expert's opinion
Attorneys for Los Angeles County's former sheriff will not oppose a court-appointed medical expert's conclusion that the retired lawman, now in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, is competent to stand trial on obstruction of justice charges, according to court papers obtained Wednesday. In a stipulation filed in Los Angeles federal court, lawyers for the prosecution and defense have agreed not to contest the so-far unidentified psychologist's opinion that Lee Baca is mentally healthy enough to stand trial next month. However, defense attorneys still want to tell a jury that their client was impaired from the disease as early as 2011.

Police Cruiser Rear Window Shot Out In Baldwin Park; Suspect Sought
Authorities searched for a suspect who shot out the rear window of a police cruiser in Baldwin Park Wednesday night. The shooting occurred around 8:45 p.m. near Ramona and Baldwin Park boulevards in a Burger King parking lot. The officer had just finished a traffic stop and was pulling out of the parking lot when his window exploded. Lt. Chris Kubbery said that the neighborhood and surrounding area were being searched as a precaution with the help of K-9 units and a helicopter.

California judge rejects pimping charges involving major escort site Backpage.com
A California judge tentatively rejected pimping charges Wednesday against the operators of a major international website that advertises escort services and was called the "world's top online brothel" by the state attorney general. Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Michael Bowman cited a federal law involving freedom of speech while ruling that the state attorney general's office cannot continue prosecuting Backpage.com's CEO Carl Ferrer and former owners Michael Lacey and James Larkin.

In a proof-of-concept study released Monday, UC San Diego researchers recovered and processed enough of these chemicals from targeted cellphones to get a partial snapshot of what food the phone users recently ate, which beauty and hygiene products they used and which locations they may have visited.

Texas officer dies in collision with train
A police officer was killed Wednesday after his vehicle was struck by a train. Sgt. Nathan Brandley told the Caller-Times that Officer Ken Starrs, 65, was driving in a pickup truck en route to his office, attempted to cross the railroad tracks and was struck by an oncoming train. Brandley said the intersection does not have railroad crossing arms.

Ala. sheriff found dead inside office
An investigation is underway after the Bibb County sheriff was found dead this morning at sheriff's headquarters from an apparent gunshot wound. Sheriff's investigators said they received the call shortly after 9 a.m. Hannah was found dead from a single gunshot wound to the head in the restroom that adjoins his office.

Ore. deputy shot; suspect in custody
A sheriff's deputy was shot in the leg and a man was injured after a shooting Tuesday morning in Happy Valley, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said. The deputy responded after Steven W. Wilson, a pedestrian, was struck by a vehicle at Southeast Sunnyside Road and 139th Avenue, said sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. Brian Jensen. The deputy and Wilson then got into an altercation, Jensen said.

Los Angeles tops the nation in chronically homeless people, federal report finds
For the second year in a row, Los Angeles reported the largest number of chronically homeless people in the nation — nearly 13,000 — and 95% of them live outdoors, in cars, tents and encampments, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's report to Congress released Wednesday.

DWP to lease rooftops from homeowners for solar panels program
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is planning to lease hundreds of rooftops under a program to install solar panels in various neighborhoods around the city, it was announced Wednesday. The Board of Water and Power Commissioners this week approved a plan to pay homeowners $30 per month to lease their rooftops for 20 years. DWP is looking to install solar panels on up to 400 single-family homes over three years, and will keep the energy generated.
