LAPD Motorcycle Officer Injured in Crash on 10 Freeway Near Arlington Heights
A Los Angeles Police motorcycle officer was injured in a crash along the eastbound 10 Freeway near Arlington Avenue Thursday night, officials said. The crash was reported about 9:25 p.m. in the Arlington Heights area and an ambulance was called for multiple contusions, Officer Tony Im said. A car changed lanes in front of the officer and he crashed into the rear of the car, Im added. The officer, who was on duty at the time, works at the west traffic division of the agency, Im said.

Police Investigate Man's Death on USC's Fraternity Row
A man's death Thursday on USC's fraternity row near the school's South Los Angeles campus prompted a police investigation. The death was reported about 4:35 p.m. in the 600 block of West 28th Street, near Figueroa Street, in the University Park section of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im. The investigation was taking place on USC's fraternity row and was being handled by the LAPD, according to David Carlisle of the university's Department of Public Safety.

Man Shoots, Critically Injures Himself in L.A. After Shooting Girlfriend in Fontana: Police
A man shot and critically injured himself in front of a LAPD station after allegedly shooting his girlfriend and stealing a car in Fontana Thursday night. The incident was reported about 8:25 p.m. in a home along the 18200 block of Orange Way, according to Fontana police said in a news release. Officers discovered that Kayvon Isaccs, 25, was involved in an argument with his girlfriend when he shot her one time and ran away. The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

Suspect Steals Man's Car In Northridge, Captured In Red-Light Camera Photo
A man whose car was stolen in Northridge ended up receiving a red-light camera ticket that showed the suspect's face. Esteban Duran said he was targeted by thieves three nights in a row. On the first night, they broke into his Mercedes and stole his wallet. They stole his Toyota Corolla the second night, and the car happened to have spare keys to his Mercedes inside.

Man Charged With Vandalizing Trump's Walk Of Fame Star To Appear In Court
A 52-year-old man who admittedly defaced Donald Trump's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is schedule to be arraigned Friday on a charge of felony vandalism. James Lambert Otis, of Los Angeles, could face up to three years in jail if convicted as charged, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Otis previously said that he originally intended to “remove” the entire star from the 6800 block of Hollywood Boulevard to auction it off in New York.

Woman Appeals Defeat in Rape Lawsuit Against Derrick Rose
The ex-girlfriend who lost her lawsuit accusing NBA star Derrick Rose and two friends of raping her appealed the verdict Thursday on the grounds that damning testimony should have been excluded and other evidence should have been admitted at trial. Jurors cleared the Knicks point guard and his friends last month in Los Angeles federal court after they testified that the woman was coherent and willingly engaged in sex with them during an evening get-together at Rose's rented mansion in Beverly Hills and again early the next morning at her apartment in August 2013.

Appellate panel upholds man's 12-year prison sentence for live-in boyfriend's killing
A state appeals court panel Thursday upheld a man's 12- year prison sentence for fatally stabbing and mutilating his live-in boyfriend at the West Hollywood apartment they briefly shared. The three-justice panel from California's 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected the defense's contention that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark Windham should have sentenced Andre Davids to six years in prison for the March 29, 2014, death of Kurtland Ma. Davids, now 39, was convicted last December of voluntary manslaughter. Jurors acquitted him of the more serious charge of second-degree murder in the 34-year-old emergency room doctor's killing.

Slain Downey Officer Ricardo Galvez Honored At Fallen Officer Memorial Ceremony
Friends, family and fellow officers attended an emotional plaque dedication ceremony to honor fallen Downey police officer Ricardo "Ricky" Galvez, who was gunned down last year. The 29-year-old was sitting in his car in plain clothes outside the Downey Police Department when he was shot and killed in a targeted attempted robbery in November 2015. "He lived life as a shining example for others to emulate," Downey Police Chief Carl Charles said during the ceremony. Gavlez was a Marine veteran who served two tours and had been a police officer for five years. His career dream was to become a K-9 officer, which is what he had just finished training for when he was shot.

CHP motorcycle officer injured in 10 Freeway crash in Mid-City area
A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was injured when he crashed Thursday on the eastbound 10 Freeway in the Mid-City area. The crash occurred shortly before 9:45 p.m. near Normandie Avenue, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Scott said. All eastbound lanes were closed for the investigation.

Cop hero saves older dog ‘Kolby' from S. Pasadena house fire
A police officer rescued a 17-year-old dog from a house fire in South Pasadena, authorities said Friday. Around 1:10 p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched to the fire in the 1000 block of Garfield Avenue, finding the house to be partially engulfed in flames. After attempting to locate any occupants verbally, South Pasadena Police Department Cpl. Craig Phillips and Officer Brian Wiley forced entry into the home and encountered the small Maltese named Kolby cowering in the corner of a downstairs room, police said. No one else was inside.

Legal Loophole Could Give Murderous Brothers Erik And Lyle Menendez Chance For New Trial
Brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez, raised as young Beverly Hills scions, are two of California's most notorious murderers. The two killed their parents with a shotgun and were sentenced to life in prison. The two — Erik is now 46, Lyle now 48 — have tried to appeal their conviction for decades. But Paige said they are appealing their case because they were not allowed to present a key element in their defense. In their second trial, which ended in the life convictions, the judge wouldn't allow the defense to present all the allegations of abuse.

Man Accused Of Killing 2 Officers Had Called Police 'Heroes'
Days before he allegedly killed two Iowa police officers, Scott Michael Greene sent a note to one of their departments apologizing for prior run-ins, saying his "dark days" were over and praising police as "absolute heroes." In an online compliment form addressed to the "many officers" of the Urbandale Police Department, the unemployed 46-year-old father wrote Oct. 29: "I love you folks."

Idaho K-9 dies days after being shot during manhunt
A police dog who was shot last week during a manhunt for a shooting suspect has died, the department reported. Boise Police posted several photos and a message on its Facebook page that K-9 Jardo was rushed to the hospital after his family noticed he was acting strangely. He died after going into cardiac arrest.

L.A. City Leaders Will Fight to Protect Undocumented Immigrants From Deportation Under Trump
Los Angeles city leaders are considering a series of moves designed to protect immigrants in this city illegally in the wake of Donald Trump's election, including the hiring of an immigration advocate and policies to prevent L.A. residents from being deported. Worried that Trump will pursue mass deportations once in office, Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson announced the effort Thursday, saying Angelenos are “deeply concerned” about changes to federal immigration policies under Trump.

L.A. narrows list of developers for upcoming homeless-housing projects
Officials on Thursday took a preliminary step toward using city land to build about 500 housing units for Los Angeles' chronically homeless population. The City Administrative Office recommended four developers who will have exclusive negotiating rights to build on 10 parcels scattered across Lincoln Heights, the San Fernando Valley, the Westside and South Los Angeles.
