San Antonio officer shot to death during traffic stop
A San Antonio police officer was fatally shot during a traffic stop Sunday in what the department's chief described as a targeted killing similar to recent police shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Detective Benjamin Marconi, a 20-year veteran of the department, was shot in his patrol car outside police headquarters, Chief William McManus said Sunday in a news conference. Marconi was 50 years old. "[When] most families will be celebrating the holidays SAPD will be burying one of its own because of an ultimate act of cowardice by a suspect who will be caught and brought to justice," McManus said.

St. Louis police officer shot in face, critically wounded in ambush
A St. Louis police officer was shot twice in the face and critically wounded on Sunday in an ambush while sitting in his patrol car, city police said. St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the officer was shot when a silver-colored car pulled up next to his cruiser at an intersection and someone opened fire before speeding away. The wounded officer was conscious and able to speak after the attack, Dotson said.

Gladstone, Missouri police officer shot in traffic stop; 2nd Mo. officer shot and 4th nationwide on Sunday
A Gladstone police officer shot during a traffic stop Sunday night is recovering in the hospital and is expected to be okay, police say. The officer was shot Sunday evening around 10:34 p.m. during a traffic stop at NW Vivion Road and U.S. 169. According to Kari Thompson with the Kansas City Police Department, which is conducting the investigation, a Gladstone officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at Vivion Road and U.S. 169. As officers attempted to take the suspect into custody a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the suspect displayed a handgun, shots were fired and the suspect,who is described as a man in his late teens, was fatally wounded. A Gladstone officer was also shot, but sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Suspect caught after Sanibel officer shot during traffic stop
City officials said a suspect was in custody after a Sanibel city police officer was shot following a routine traffic stop Sunday night. The officer's shooting was a first for the island police department, according to police officials. The shooting took place shortly before 8 p.m. when the Sanibel city police officer was wounded by a drive-by shooter as he sat in his patrol car after completing a routine traffic stop near Bailey and Sandcastle roads. Other officers later exchanged shots with a suspect.

Details emerge in fatal shooting of US marshal
The hunt for a fugitive accused of shooting at police in South Carolina turned deadly when law officers tracked the suspect to southeast Georgia, where an attempt to arrest him erupted in gunfire. The brief shootout at a mobile home in rural Long County killed a deputy U.S. marshal as well as the man his team was trying to apprehend. The U.S. Marshals Service said Patrick Carothers, deputy commander of the agency's Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, died after being shot twice as the officers entered the mobile home.

Man Armed With Machete and Gun Shoots Police Officer
A police officer was injured in a shooting in Hawthorne on Saturday afternoon, according to the Hawthorne Police Department. The suspect, armed with an 18-inch machete and a gun, was "irate" and refusing to leave a public storage facility, police said. The officer was shot in the leg and taken to a hospital around 4:20 p.m. on the 4800 block of West Rosecrans Avenue, police said. The officer's condition is unknown. The suspect was also hit by gunfire in the stomach.

Long Beach Man Suspected of Kidnapping, Sexually Assaulting 2 Teen Girls Arrested: LAPD
A 29-year-old man suspected of kidnapping and sexually assaulting two teen girls in the past two months has been arrested, the Los Angeles Police Department announced Friday. Samuel Alexander Vasquez was taken into custody as he was leaving work in Long Beach, according to an LAPD news release. He was arrested Thursday, according to L.A. County inmate records. Vasquez is suspected in two cases in the Los Angeles area.

Detectives Investigate Apparent Murder-Suicide In Harbor
Detectives with the LAPD's Harbor division are investigating an apparent murder-suicide. Around 8 a.m. Thursday, citizens in the area of Gaffey Street and 36th Street, discovered a male and female deceased inside of a van parked at the scenic overlook. Detectives believe the suspect shot the female victim once and then turned the gun on himself.

Police: 'Unsafe speed' contributes to deadly crash in Echo Park killing 2 women
By all accounts, what happened Sunday at the corner of Sunset and Rosemont in Echo Park was terrifying. Police said 46-year old Bryan Gin was behind the wheel of his silver Mustang when he lost control of the car and hit three women standing at a bus stop. They were pronounced dead at the scene. LAPD Captain Jonathan Tom said the driver of the Mustang tried to pass another car when he lost control.

Tarzana Neighborhood on Alert After Home Surveillance Captures Suspicious Man With Knife Outside Porch
A Tarzana neighborhood in on alert after a home surveillance system captured a suspicious man lurking outside a family's porch with a knife. Kelley Voy woke up Wednesday and noticed that her front gate was wide open and looked over her surveillance footage from the previous night. That's when she saw it: a bearded man hanging out in her front porch with a large knife.

Suspect Taken Into Custody After Report Of Lewd Behavior, Barricade In USC Library
Authorities took a male suspect into custody Saturday afternoon on suspicion of doing a lewd act in the Doheny Memorial Library at USC and then barricading himself inside to avoid apprehension. Authorities said a female contacted USC public safety after she saw the man engaging in a lewd behavior. It was unclear what that action was. The suspect fled from officers when they tried to take him into custody, police said, and he then barricaded himself inside the library. The university issued an alert to students asking anyone inside the library to exit and that they would be escorted out by police.

$50,000 Reward Offered for Information in West Adams Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash
A $50,000 reward is being offered for information in a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred last weekend in West Adams, the Los Angeles Police Department officials announced Friday. Iris Davis, 50, was crossing West Adams Boulevard outside the crosswalk near the intersection with Vineyard Avenue about 1:40 a.m. Nov. 12. She was struck by a driver in a pickup truck who did not stop, police said.

Missing Campers Found In Good Health Near Mexico Border
Two people who were reported missing after they were believed to have gone camping at Joshua Tree National Park or the Imperial Sand Dunes were found in good health near the Mexico border, authorities and family members said. Los Angeles Police said on Friday that Aaron Morganstein and Mariya Mitkova were located in an area between Joshua Tree National Park and the U.S.-Mexico border. The couple reunited with family members in Blythe, a small town far from Joshua Tree near the Arizona border.

Gang member sentenced to life without parole for 2 murders
A gang member who pleaded guilty to the February 2008 shooting death of a man holding a toddler in the Cypress Park area of Los Angeles, along with a cellmate's killing in county jail about three years later, was sentenced Friday to a pair of life prison terms without the possibility of parole. Sparing himself from a potential death sentence if he had gone to trial, Jose Angel Gomez pleaded guilty Aug. 25 to the Feb. 21, 2008, killing of Marco Salas, who was carrying his 2-year-old step-granddaughter near Aragon Avenue Elementary School, along with the strangulation of Jonathan Najera in Men's Central Jail between Feb. 28, 2011, and March 1, 2011.

LADWP's overcharged customers get at least $67.5 million under settlement approved Friday
A judge late Friday gave a preliminary nod to a class-action settlement for customers of the Los?Angeles Department of Power who were overcharged at least $67.5?million as a result of a botched billing system. Los?Angeles Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle granted preliminary approval to the proposed settlement related to customer overcharges and complaints as a result of the faulty billing system designed by PricewaterhouseCoopers and launched in September 2013, according to an LADWP news release.
