LAPD Critics Say Staffing Is Dangerously Low
The night after the election an impromptu demonstration downtown saw protesters shut down the 101 freeway, confront police and vandalize buildings, TV news vans and police cars. The next night  an undercover officer was reportedly punched and beaten  by a pair of demonstrators. The Los Angeles Police Protective League, which represents rank-and-file cops, said the department's staffing affected officer safety and was unacceptable.  "We were caught with our pants down," says LAPPL president Craig Lally.

Suspect In Fatal Police Shooting Upset Over Custody Battle
The suspect arrested in the ambush shooting of a San Antonio police detective has said he was angry about a child-custody battle and "lashed out at somebody who didn't deserve it." Otis Tyrone McKane was being led by police to the Bexar County Jail late Monday when he told reporters that he was angry with the court system for not letting him see his son and took it out on Detective Benjamin Marconi.

Police on alert after 4 shootings in 1 day
Police are on high alert -- and in at least one city, mourning -- after four officers were shot Sunday in incidents around the country. Perhaps most startling to law enforcement is that in three of the shootings, it appears the alleged perpetrators specifically targeted police officers, according to authorities and local media reports.

Police officers 'keenly aware' they are targets for violence
The shootings of police officers in Texas and Missouri on Sunday were the latest in what law enforcement officials say is an alarming spike in ambush-style attacks. One-third of police officers shot to death on the job this year were purposely targeted by their assailant, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Woman Fatally Stabbed In Venice
Two women and a man are being sought Tuesday in the fatal stabbing of a woman in Venice, police said. Officers responded to 80 Windward Ave. at 9:30 p.m. Monday to a call reporting a fight and an assault with a deadly weapon, Los Angeles police Lt. J. Radtke said. Arriving officers saw the woman being held by witnesses. She was treated by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics before being taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries, Radtke said.

Good Samaritan Stabbed By Shoplifting Suspect's Boyfriend In Valley Village
A Good Samaritan, who tried to help a Valley Village Gelson's Market security officer struggling with a shoplifting suspect, was stabbed by the suspect's boyfriend, police said. A loss-prevention officer at the grocery store stopped the woman right outside the front door around 10 a.m. Monday for allegedly shoplifting, Los Angeles police said. "The boyfriend ran to help, wanted to attack the loss-prevention officer when an innocent bystander intervened to try to help the loss-prevention officer, and the suspect stabbed the bystander a couple of times," said LAPD Sgt. Leonid Tsap.

Police: Female Vandal Captured On Camera Defacing Several Historic Los Angeles Landmarks
A female vandal was caught on camera defacing multiple historic landmarks in downtown Los Angeles last weekend. Security cameras captured a blue-haired woman vandalizing the walls of the Hall of Justice, Hall of Records and Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, all located on Temple Street. As the woman passed by the Hall of Justice with a cigarette in one hand and a can of blue spray paint in the other, she wrote anti-Trump graffiti on the walls.

Multiple pedestrians struck by vehicle outside LA Convention Center
A half-dozen people, five of them pedestrians, were hurt Monday when an electric vehicle on a test drive struck a cement planter and sent debris flying near the downtown Convention Center, where the annual Los Angeles Auto Show is being held. Paramedics were sent to the 1200 block of South Figueroa Street about 1:15 p.m. The pedestrians were on or near a sidewalk when they were injured, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Ex-LA Sheriff Lee Baca to return to court Tuesday in corruption case
Federal prosecutors will ask a judge Tuesday to bar testimony from a defense expert who is expected to say former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease while being investigated in a jail corruption scandal. During the proceedings, defense attorneys are hoping to introduce testimony by psychiatrist Dr. James Spar to link Baca's statements during an investigation of abuse within county jails to mild cognitive impairment. But in their motion, federal prosecutors previously said Spar's testimony “is irrelevant and not helpful to the jury.”

Why theft of a firearm, regardless of value, is once again a felony in California
A little-publicized provision of the firearms ballot initiative Proposition 63 approved by California voters this month did what an Inland assemblywoman's legislative attempts could not. The theft of a firearm worth less than $950, which became a misdemeanor under 2014's Proposition 47, is once again a felony after voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 63.

Off-duty Philly officer shot while shielding son from gunfire
An off-duty officer was shot Friday while shielding his two-year-old son from gunfire.  Officer Angelo Romero was walking in a neighborhood with his son when a group of armed suspects opened fire at each other, NBC10 reported. The topic of off-duty carry is too big an issue to ignore, especially when it is so starkly presented in the news headlines of the day. Police Commissioner Richard Ross told the news station the suspects are between 15- and 18-years-old.

Chicago shootings down another weekend, but violence still draws national attention Gun violence in Chicago declined for the second weekend in a row, but the shooting death of a congressman's grandson thrust the city back into the national spotlight.  There have been nearly 700 homicides in the city so far this year and nearly 4,000 people shot, a level of violence not seen in Chicago since the late 1990s, according to Tribune and police data.

Garcetti pushes back against possible cuts in federal funds over immigration stance
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Monday that President-elect Donald Trump would be making a “mistake” if his administration cuts federal funding to L.A. over the city's immigration stance. “Anything that would take away federal aid would cause social, economic and security problems,” Garcetti said. “I am hoping we can have this conversation separate and without threats.”

Council considering massive condo, retail towers near LA's Fashion District
The Los Angeles City Council will consider a mixed- use project Tuesday that would add 1,400 apartments and condominiums, a 200-room hotel and commercial space near downtown's Fashion District. The project at the site known for The Reef building, a design and wholesale showroom space at 1900 S. Broadway, includes a pair of residential buildings each towering over 30 stories, as well as retail and commercial areas.
