University Police Officer Shot In The Head In Detroit
A police officer is in critical condition after he was shot in the head while on patrol near a university campus in Detroit, and authorities have said they are interrogating a man about the attack. Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Wayne State University officer Collin Rose, 29, was on duty around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when he radioed to say he was investigating possible thefts of navigation systems from cars and SUVs and that he was about to speak to someone on a bike.

Police Union Says Anti-Trump Protests Showed LAPD Is Understaffed
In the days following the election, thousands took to the streets of downtown to protest the election of Donald Trump. There were, certainly, a number of takeaways to be absorbed from the demonstrations. For the Los Angeles Police Protective League, however, the focus was on police staffing, or, in their opinion, a lack thereof.The LAPPL, a union of police officers, said in a recent statement that the protests showed that the LAPD is dangerously understaffed. "LAPD officers were completely overwhelmed by the number of protesters," wrote Craig Lally, president of the LAPPL.

Officers Respond to Triple Shooting in South L.A.; Gunman Dead, Victims Likely to Survive
Authorities were investigating a shooting in Los Angeles Tuesday night that wounded a mother and her two children and left the gunman dead, police said. Officers responded to reports of shots being fired on the 1400 block of East 51st Street in the Central-Alameda area south of downtown just after 10 p.m., according to Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Alex Baez. The victims — a 39-year-old mother, her 16-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son — were able to approach police when they arrived on scene and their injuries did not appear life-threatening, Baez said.

Suspects sought after pregnant mom stabbed to death in Venice
Authorities on Tuesday sought public help to find three people involved in the fatal stabbing of a pregnant mother in Venice. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Division went to 80 Windward Ave. at 9:30 p.m. Monday in response to a report of a fight and an assault with a deadly weapon, said LAPD Lt. John Radtke. Police are looking for two women and a man who left the scene traveling east on Windward Avenue in a dark-colored SUV. Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call LAPD West Bureau Homicide detectives at (213) 382-9470, or (877) LAPD-247.

Venice Store Owner Fights Off Robber
A robber apparently picked the wrong place in Venice to hold up. Security video showed a man in a hoodie entering Simons Market on Rose Avenue and pointing a gun at the store owner and the cashier at 7:17 p.m. Monday. The owner, Simon Mellor, immediately came up behind the gunman, put him a headlock and began wrestling with him. The struggle continued outside the store, where Mellor was able to knock the gun out of the robber's hand. But he had a second weapon hidden on his body.

Security Guard Shot During Marijuana Dispensary Robbery
A security guard was shot during the robbery of a marijuana dispensary in South Los Angeles, police said Wednesday. The shooting was reported around 8 p.m. Tuesday on Imperial Highway and South Broadway, said Sgt. F. Macias of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southeast Division.

Family of Hit-and-Run Victim Pleads for Driver to Come Forward
The family of woman killed during a hit-and-run is mourning her loss and pleading for the driver to come forward. Iris Davis, 51, died after someone ran her down on Adams Boulevard at Vineyard Avenue on Nov. 12, according to LAPD traffic detectives. Instead of celebrating Thanksgiving at her home, like it usually does, the family is reeling from the pain caused by the loss of the mother of four. "You have to be sub-human not to feel this," said Vivian Gibson, Iris Davis' mother.

No Charges For Man Who Crashed Car At LA Auto Show
Police will not seek charges against a man test driving a car at the Los Angeles Auto show who crashed it into a concrete planter and injured himself and five others. The impact sent shards from the planter flying but Officer Sal Ramirez says investigators determined Monday's crash was an accident. Paramedics evaluated eight people and took six including the driver to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries.

Man who stole San Diego patrol car, ran down officer gets 20 years in prison
A man who stole a San Diego police patrol SUV and then used it to run down an officer was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years and four months in prison. William Frank Bogard, 27, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and other charges in connection with the January 2015 incident that injured Officer Jeffrey Swett.

'America's Invisible Crime': Cargo Theft Expected to Surge During Holidays
Truckers are being warned about the risk of cargo theft during the holiday weekend, especially in Southern California. Since the beginning of the year, nearly $30 million in cargo has been stolen off of highways and from distribution centers throughout California. That is a 40% increase over last year, according to CargoNet, a cargo theft prevention and recovery network.

Florida Police Dog Fatally Shot While Chasing Fugitive
Investigators say a fugitive fatally shot a police dog that was chasing him in central Florida. Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson tells local news outlets the dog named Forrest was shot Tuesday evening while chasing a man who started shooting at deputies. The man continued running into the woods in Deltona, which is near Daytona Beach.

After hearts across Southern California collectively broke watching an officer's despair unfold as his K-9 partner Credo was shot and killed in the line of duty, the officer now has something to help ease his grief: a new partner in law. The smile on Long Beach Officer Mike Parcells' face said it all as he stood beaming next to his new partner, Storm, at a reveal Tuesday.

Slain San Antonio officer recalled as genuine and generous
A slain San Antonio police detective was a genuine and generous man who took seriously his job of protecting the community both on duty and off, his friends said. Detective Benjamin Marconi's immediate family members declined to comment, but a friend, Mike Bobo, who owns a deli in San Antonio, said Marconi never wavered from doing what was right.

South Gate police officer and wife found dead in Long Beach condo
A South Gate police officer and his wife were found fatally shot at their Long Beach condo, and police said Tuesday that the double shooting was under investigation as a possible murder-suicide. Officers were called about 10 p.m. Monday to a possible domestic violence incident in the 1000 block of Park Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department. The condo's door was ajar, and inside, officers found Kyle Kurian, 25, and his wife, Greta Kurian, 22, with gunshot wounds in their upper torsos, police said.

L.A. City Council Approves Building Controversial $1.2 Billion Skyscraper in Historic South-Central
The Los Angeles City Council approved a controversial plan Tuesday to build a $1.2-billion residential, hotel, and retail skyscraper project in Historic South-Central that community activists said would lead to increased housing costs and displacement of low-income residents. Minutes after the council passed the development of the Reef Project with a 12-0 vote, the audience erupted in chants of, “No to the Reef! The community does not approve!” and “Shame on Price!” a verbal admonishment directed at Councilman Curren Price, an early supporter of the project.

Proposal Would Legalize LA Sidewalk Vendors
Two Los Angeles City Council members want to legalize sidewalk vendors, arguing it will help people who fear deportation in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's promise to ship out millions who are in the country illegally. Joe Buscaino and Curren Price sent a letter Tuesday to their fellow councilmembers outlining a policy to decriminalize and regulate street vending.
