Woman from Sun Valley fatally shot after Tarzana hike, man arrested
A 24-year-old Sun Valley woman was fatally shot after a hike in Tarzana in which the suspect was allegedly testing his handgun, authorities said Monday. Heriberto Gonzalez, 20, of Reseda was set to be booked on suspicion of murder in the death of Angela Hernandez, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. “We're looking for any witnesses to come forward,” Detective Manuel Armijo said in a telephone interview.

Increased security at LA transit stations after threat to Universal City stop
An "imminent'' threat against the Universal City Station along Metro's Red Line prompted area law enforcement agencies to beef up patrols Monday at that and other stations, while investigators worked to determine the credibility of the threat. A caller used a public safety line to inform authorities of the threat, which was then relayed to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, FBI Assistant Director in Charge Deirdre Fike said at a news conference at the federal building in Westwood, where the FBI's Los Angeles field office is located.

South LA liquor store customer shot to death
A customer was shot and killed by a gunman while inside a liquor store in South Los Angeles, a police officer said Sunday. He was at first described by police as a 40-year-old man. The shooting attack was just before midnight Saturday night, inside the Gourmet Liquor Store, 714 W. Gage Ave., according to Officer Mike Lopez of the LAPD's Media Relation Section .

Video Uploaded To Snapchat Shows West Hills Teen Brutally Punched In Head
A video uploaded to Snapchat shows a teenage boy brutally punched by another teen he didn't know outside of a West Hills fast-food restaurant. Authorities said they received a call of a fight in the 6400 block of Platt Avenue around 4:40 p.m. They arrived and found Jordan Peisner, 14, suffering from severe injuries to the head.

USC faculty express safety concerns following professor's stabbing death
Academic colleagues of Bosco Tjan, a USC professor of psychology stabbed to death last week allegedly by a graduate student, pondered Monday what they can do to identify troubled students and to protect themselves. Their concerns arose as hundreds of students, faculty and staff gathered on the campus to remember the slain educator. “We are facing uncertainty each and every day,” said Ming Huang, 60, a professor of computer science.

L.A. Ethics Commission investigating LAPD's watchdog over handling of special inmate's jail log
Los Angeles ethics officials are investigating an allegation that the Police Department's watchdog broke city ethics rules by showing a reporter a confidential document outlining the movements of a high-profile inmate who was in special protection. A lawyer representing Inspector General Alex Bustamante said he met with ethics investigators in recent weeks and had tried to resolve the case, which he said is ongoing.

Jury Selection In Corruption Trial Of Former LA County Sheriff Lee Baca Begins
Jury selection was set to begin in the federal corruption trial of former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca on Monday. But that jury will be only part of his first trial after a federal judge ruled on Friday that his case would be split into two separate trials. The jury selection for Monday will involve charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges from 2011.

LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey sworn in for second term
Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey was sworn in Monday for her second term and pledged to focus more attention on protecting children from neglect and abuse and addressing a growing epidemic of opioid abuse. “We must do everything in our power to protect our children,” Lacey said. “It is time we re-assess the laws and procedures that are designed to protect minors from abuse and neglect, but sometimes fail them.” Lacey said she wanted to find new ways to use the resources of her office to fight these battles.

California Supreme Court limits police searches
Police officers may only conduct a search following a traffic stop if they believe there is probable cause a crime was committed, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday in a child pornography case involving a bicyclist pulled over for rolling through a stop sign. Torrance police stopped bicyclist Paul Macabeo in 2012 after following him a short distance with their patrol car's headlights off. They acknowledged he was not riding erratically and did not try to flee. Macabeo was arrested after the officers searched his phone and said they found photos of underage girls.

Off-duty Texas deputy dies when car goes into sinkhole
Officials say an off-duty sheriff's deputy has died and two other people hurt when two vehicles plunged into a water-filled sinkhole in San Antonio, Texas. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office on Monday identified the victim as 69-year-old Deputy Dora Linda Nishihara, who was a courthouse bailiff. A crane was used to retrieve her personal car from water about 12-feet deep. Nishihara's body was inside the vehicle.

LA Councilman Jose Huizar Declines To Run For Becerra's Congressional Seat
City Councilman Jose Huizar took himself out of the running Monday for the congressional seat expected to be vacated by Rep. Xavier Becerra, who accepted Gov. Jerry Brown's nomination for California Attorney General last week. “After careful consideration and much discussion with my wife Richelle and family, we have decided not to run for the 34th Congressional seat that will soon be vacated by the appointment of Congressman Xavier Becerra to the attorney general position,” Huizar said. “I will proudly continue as a Los Angeles City Councilmember for the 14th District.”

No rush to judgement: Councilman warns LA must ‘take its time' to find top city honcho
Councilman David Ryu Monday called for a nationwide search to find the successor to Los Angeles' top adviser to the mayor and City Council and warned against quickly picking someone for “one one of our most important” posts. Incumbent Miguel Santana announced last week that he is stepping down. Santana is leaving after seven years of serving as the city administrative officer to become CEO of the Los Angeles County Fair Association, which manages the Fairplex in Pomona. His last official day on the job is Jan. 16.

New era begins in L.A. County government as 'supermajority' of Democrats takes the helm
A new era began Monday at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors with the end of the old guard and the inauguration of a generation of board members that is likely to accelerate a shift toward more liberal policies on a variety of issues. Monday marked the inauguration of new board members Janice Hahn and Kathryn Barger. With this, the five-member board will have four women and four Democrats.
