Ambush Shootings of Police Officers Reach Highest Total in Decades
Police officers across the country say they are taking new precautions in response to a spike in what they call “ambush-style” attacks against them. Cops are teaming up to respond to emergency calls, suiting up more often in ballistic vests and helmets, even taking greater care to monitor their surroundings while dining out, police officials from half a dozen cities who spoke with The Trace said

Attacks on Police Officers Would Be Deemed Hate Crimes Under Proposed California Law
Alarmed by a wave of shootings targeting police officers, state Assemblyman Jay Obernolte (R-Big Bear) has introduced a bill that would make an attack on law enforcement a hate crime in California, allowing stiffer penalties for those convicted. Obernolte's bill comes after a series of shootings that have left 62 law enforcement officers dead so far this year, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. That is up from 38 officers shot to death in the line of duty by this time last year.

L.A. police officers complete run to Sacramento to benefit fallen colleagues
Two Los Angeles police officers who ran 420 miles across the state for their fallen brothers and sisters arrived in Sacramento late Monday night. Los Angeles Police Department Officers Joe Cirrito and Kristina Tudor finished their journey around 11:30 p.m. at the California Peace Officers' Memorial in Sacramento. They were trailed by a line of police and fire vehicles.

West Hills teen sucker-punched, left with brain injury wants to know ‘why?'
Jordan Peisner has one burning question for the teen who randomly sucker-punched him in the head Friday outside a Wendy's at a West Hills shopping center. “Why?” the 14-year-old asked in a telephone interview from his hospital bed this week. “Why did you do this to me?” The freshman at El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills, who has been recovering after being airlifted to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, is now dealing with a 14-millimeter blood clot in his brain, a concussion, skull fracture, ruptured eardrum, hearing loss and “screaming headaches” that require him to be closely monitored, according to his father, Ed Peisner.

LAPD Pursue Suspected DUI Driver in Tujunga
Los Angeles police pursued suspected DUI driver for over an hour in Tujunga Tuesday night. The pursuit started around 10 p.m. in Pacoima. The driver was driving on his right rear rim after his tire blew out during the pursuit. The pursuit ended on Silverton Street in Tujunga after the driver crashed into a civilian's vehicle. He was safely taken into custody. The driver may have possibly been armed and is a known gang member, police said.

It was a great night in Hollywood for the LAPD and possibly some of its future officers. The department, with money provided by local nonprofit Learn to Lead, held a scholarship awards dinner Monday, Dec. 5, 2016.

Metro Subway Commuters Encounter Heavy Security as L.A. Responds to Terror Attack Threat
Law enforcement in Los Angeles bulked up its presence Tuesday on the Metro transit system after a tip about a terror attack threat. The FBI says it got the tip from a foreign government source Monday and passed it along to authorities. The Universal City Metro Red Line station was the object of a potential threat that was to take place Tuesday. More police and sheriff's deputies, K-9 bomb teams and undercover officers have been deployed along the transit system.

LAPD Officer Fined for Leaking Audio Recording of 'Django Unchained' Actress
The Los Angeles Ethics Commission ruled Tuesday that former Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Jim Parker violated city rules by releasing an audio tape of his conversation with a "Django Unchained" actress during her arrest in 2014, and fined him $500. Staff had recommended a fine of $10,000, but all four present members of the commission agreed that a more nominal fine was appropriate.  Los Angeles Police Protective League President Craig Lally and Acting Director Mark Cronin spoke before the commission in support of Parker. Both recounted times they had released audio recordings of incidents in the field to the media in the past and were not disciplined.

FBI Determines Red Line Threat Not Credible
The FBI has found no evidence that the threat to the Metro Red Line in Los Angeles was credible, officials said Tuesday night. FBI officials say the same anonymous caller who provided the tip in Australia may have provided tips in the past that did not materialize. The agency said the Joint Terrorism Task Force will continue to try to determine the identity of the caller and warned that anyone who provides false information to law enforcement is subject to prosecution.

Owner of home where Kid Cali was killed issued ‘illegal house party' complaint
The owner of the Granada Hills mansion where rapper Kid Cali was fatally shot in August has been issued a complaint for allegedly having an illegal house party, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said Tuesday. Edith Kafui Augustt, 50, was slapped with a misdemeanor land-use violation and faces a possible six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine, authorities said. She's set to be arraigned on Jan. 11 in the San Fernando Courthouse, according to Frank Mateljan, spokesman for City Attorney Mike Feuer's office.

LAPD critic sues city alleging retaliation when she was arrested during 2014 downtown protests
A political consultant and writer who has written highly critical stories about commanders in the Los Angeles Police Department has filed a lawsuit accusing the agency of violating her civil rights when she was arrested during a protest against killings by police in 2014. Jasmyne Cannick's attorneys filed the lawsuit Friday, alleging that she was taken into custody as payback for stories she wrote that embarrassed the LAPD.

Man Accused Of Killing Beloved USC Professor Appears In Court
A student accused of killing a well-known USC professor just appeared in court for the first time late Tuesday. CBSLA has learned the professor was very close to the student and was his mentor. Police say 28-year-old David Jonathan Brown stabbed Bosco Tjan to death Friday. Tjan was a beloved professor in the neuroscience graduate program. Tjan was an expert on perception, vision and vision cognition and helped found the USC Dornsife Cognitive Neuroscience Imaging Center, where he served as co-director.

Former FBI Fugitive Charged With Quadruple Murder Due in Court
A former FBI fugitive and suspected gang member is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on capital murder charges for allegedly killing four people in in a shootout in South Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office. Marlon Jones, 41, has been charged with four counts of murder along with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders for a wild gun battle that erupted in a home Oct. 15 after he shot and killed a rival Jamaican gang member, according to the FBI and the District Attorney's office.

Sex with girl, 13, by Roman Polanski: Poland nixes LA extradition try
Efforts by Los Angeles prosecutors to bring back Roman Polanski to punish him for having had sex with a 13-year-old girl almost 40 years ago suffered a major setback when the Polish Supreme Court rejected a request by Poland's government to extradite the Oscar-winning filmmaker. Polanski was arrested in 1977 on charges that included the rape of a 13- year-old girl at the home of actor Jack Nicholson. He left the United States in 1978 before he could be sentenced under an agreement calling for him to plead guilty to statutory rape.

Suspect opens fire on Wash. police agency in ‘direct attack'
Police are searching for a suspect who shot at a local sheriff's department Saturday night.  Q13Fox reported that the Pierce County Sheriff's Department was struck by five bullets while two deputies were working inside. “If someone has the twisted idea that this is an opportune time to strike out at law enforcement, they will learn that they are sorely mistaken,” Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor said in a statement.

'The laws must be followed': City issues warning to L.A. school districts considering digital billboards
The Los Angeles city attorney has told local school district officials that installing commercial billboards on school property would violate city law. Although school districts, including L.A. Unified, have broad latitude over land-use matters — sometimes trumping city authority — the rules of the city prevail in this situation, City Atty. Mike Feuer said in a statement in response to news that the school district was exploring the idea of putting up a billboard at Hollywood High School.

Sales Tax Measure to Aid L.A. County Homeless Placed on March Ballot
After listening to a cavalcade of speakers praise them for a vote they hadn't yet taken, Los Angeles County supervisors on Tuesday unanimously placed a quarter-cent sales tax proposal on the March ballot to fund homeless programs. The five supervisors voted with little comment on the measure, which is expected to raise about $355 million a year over its 10-year lifespan if it gains the two-thirds majority required. Instead, they left the talking to nearly 100 speakers who came to promote the homeless tax.
