Should California make it a hate crime to attack a police officer?
In response to a spike in attacks targeting law enforcement, one California Republican wants to make doing so a hate crime. Assemblyman Jay Obernolte is proposing a bill that would put attacking a police officer under the purview of California's hate crime statute, and therefore allow for the addition of one to three years onto an offender's sentence. "The cold blooded targeting and murder of police officers in America must end," said Jerretta Sandoz, Vice President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. "Sixty three officers have been murdered this year in our country. Many targeted simply because they wear a police uniform."

Kamala Harris has doubled down on prosecuting three men behind the classified ad website Backpage.com, releasing a trove of company emails to support pimping charges after a Sacramento County judge said he was inclined to reject the case outright. Judge Michael Bowman had said in a tentative ruling last month that the federal Communications Decency Act shielded Backpage from prosecution over the content of users' ads. The judge let both sides submit new arguments before issuing a final decision, expected to be released Friday.

L.A. prosecutors are accusing four big retailers — JC Penney, Sears, Kohl's and Macy's — of tricking shoppers
The Los Angeles city attorney's office has sued four big retailers, alleging deceptive advertising that it says misled shoppers into believing that thousands of products were on sale at a hefty discount. The retailers — JC Penney, Sears, Kohl's and Macy's — falsely advertised high “list” or “regular” prices on merchandise that was never actually for sale at that price, according to the lawsuits filed Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. That led customers to believe that they were getting a better bargain with the “sale” price than they actually were.
