2 LAPD Officers Injured After Cruiser Slams Into Power Pole
A Los Angeles police cruiser has been involved in a traffic collision in the Pico-Robertson area, officials said Tuesday. The cruiser slammed into a power pole just before 2:30 a.m., located on La Cienega Boulevard near Guthrie. Firefighters extricated two officers from the vehicle, and paramedics transported them to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision.

Task force arrests 38 in connection with killings in South L.A. gang war
Authorities have arrested more than three dozen people linked to a trio of feuding gangs in South L.A. whose violence led to at least nine killings and other retaliatory attacks, officials said Monday. For more than a year, a task force of local and federal investigators has focused on quelling what authorities described as a violent gang war in the Vermont Corridor, a four-mile stretch that runs along Vermont Avenue. The violence stemmed from an alliance between two gangs targeting a third, authorities said.

Driver Arrested in Connection With South L.A. Crash That Killed 5-Year-Old in Apartment Building
A man who was being sought for his involvement in a car crash that killed a 5-year-old boy while he was sleeping in a South Los Angeles apartment was arrested on Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Jorge Ruiz-Garcia, 28, turned himself in on Dec. 9 when he was arrested on suspicion of a hit-and-run. Garcia was allegedly involved in a car crash a week before that left the little boy dead.

Mayor Garcetti Discusses LA's Rise In Hate Crimes After Election
On ABC7's "Eyewitness Newsmakers: Ask the Mayor," Mayor Eric Garcetti said reports of hate crimes in Los Angeles have doubled since the presidential election. While 30 reports is still a relatively low number, the mayor said incidents of troubling race-based comments are also on the rise. In the days since the fatal Oakland fire, Garcetti said Los Angeles police and fire are working together to head off a similar circumstance here.

Second arrest made after West Hills sucker-punch assault
A second juvenile has been arrested in connection with an unprovoked punch of a teenager resulting in serious brain injuries outside a Wendy's in West Hills, Los Angeles police said Monday. The juvenile was booked Thursday for felony conspiracy less than a week after another minor, who allegedly sucker-punched 14-year-old Jordan Peisner in the head on Dec. 2, was booked for felony assault, said Detective Angela Stewart of LAPD's Topanga Community Police Station.

Gang murderer gets no love from higher court: ‘Kill zone' appeal fails
A state appeals court panel Monday upheld a gang member's conviction for the deadly shooting of a man and wounding another person outside a Westlake District church just over four years ago.The three-justice panel from California's 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected the defense's contention that a Los Angeles Superior Court judge erred in instructing jurors that they could find Pedro Martinez guilty of attempted murder based on a “kill zone” theory.

Twitter ends data access for LE surveillance tool
Twitter has ended access to its user data for a law enforcement tool that allowed police officials to monitor social media. According to Fortune, the Media Sonar tool allowed departments to search for key terms to help police “identify illegal activity and threats to public safety.” In addition to keywords tied to things like drugs and prostitution, terms such as “policebrutality,” “JusticeForMike,” and “dissent” were flagged as well, according to a discovery by the ACLU through a 2015 public records request.

Man who dissolved UK officer in acid gets life term
A judge in London has given a crystal meth addict a life term in prison for killing a police officer during a bondage sex session and then attempting to cook and eat his body parts. Judge Nicholas Hilliard sentenced Stefano Brizzi on Monday to life in prison with at least 24 years to serve for killing 59-year-old Gordon Semple, whose dissolving body was found in an acid bath.

LA Councilman David Ryu won't run for open congressional seat
City Councilman David Ryu announced today that he will not run for the 34th Congressional District seat, expected to be vacated when Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Los Angeles, is confirmed as the state's next attorney general. “After careful thought, it's even more clear to me that my heart remains here in Los Angeles, in the neighborhoods and schools where I grew up, and with the diverse communities I have the honor of serving. Therefore, I will not seek the 34th Congressional seat.” Ryu said in a statement.

Los Angeles mayor talking up cities — even liberal ones — to Trump
During the presidential campaign, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti called President-elect Donald Trump “a racist” and “a bigot” as he campaigned for Hillary Clinton. But since election day, the Democratic mayor of the nation's second-largest city says he has spoken three times with Trump and “encouraged him to leverage cities in a good way and reward those cities that step up” with innovative ideas and ways to fund them. “If the president-elect knows anything,” Garcetti said Monday during a visit to San Francisco, “he knows leverage. Deal-making leverage.”

LA exploring use of taxpayer money to start savings accounts for kindergartners
A Los Angeles City Council committee Monday explored the option of establishing a children's savings account program for the approximately 72,000 kindergartners who enroll in the Los Angeles Unified School District each year. “It works. This works. This is a proven program,” said Councilman David Ryu. “We will not be the first, but we would be the first large city to implement this and I am very excited about this.”
