LAPD deputy chief's move to San Francisco will be a ‘big loss'
The news that Deputy Chief William Scott, a 27-year veteran of the police force, was chosen as the San Francisco police chief was viewed Tuesday as a loss for Los Angeles by his admirers, who include colleagues and even a critic of the department. Jerretta Sandoz, vice president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, previously worked under Scott when he was a lieutenant in the internal affairs division  “I've found Chief Scott to be an honest and humble leader who has supported the rank-and-file police officers under his command,” she said. “He has always approached police work with passion and integrity, and he will be missed.”

Body Found in Shallow Grave at Home of Suspect in Homicide of Missing Nurse and Former Reality TV Show Contestant: LAPD
A suspect was detained Tuesday after a former bridal reality show contestant disappeared under "suspicious circumstances" following a birthday party near Torrance over the weekend, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Jackie Jerome Rogers, a 34-year-old nursing student, was detained around 10:30 a.m. for questioning amid the ongoing search for 36-year-old Lisa Marie Naegle, a nurse and onetime contestant on E! Television's "Bridalplasty," LAPD Officer Tony Im confirmed.

L.A. steps up security measures during holiday season after Berlin market killings
Expect to see heightened security at Los Angeles shopping areas, farmers markets and other large gathering places in the coming days as authorities step up security measures in the wake of the Berlin Christmas market truck attack that killed 12 people this week. Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Michael Downing said Tuesday that his counter-terrorism bureau has been aware for some time of the potential danger from attackers using trucks or other large vehicles to run down pedestrians.

Police Commission backs LAPD's use of force in 2 shootings
The Police Commission Tuesday backed the recommendation of Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck and ruled that officers' use of force in two separate shootings nearly a year ago were within department policy. The commissioners discussed both cases in a closed session before making the announcement.

Struggling Father Recounts Being Gunned Down In South LA
A father of three was ruthlessly gunned down, left seriously injured and unable to support his family. The bullet that hit Oliver Limon exited through his left eye and damaged the nerves to his right eye, leaving him with blurred vision. The father of three was waiting for an Uber after a birthday party in South Los Angeles when another car pulled up.

Man Caught on Camera Stealing Bucket of Gold in NY Believed to Be in Los Angeles
The suspect caught on camera stealing a pot of gold in midtown Manhattan is Julio Nivelo, a 53-year-old believed to be in the Los Angeles area, police said Tuesday. Video of the alleged theft, which shows a man grabbing the 86-pound bucket of gold flakes out of the back of an armored truck in September, was circulated widely in the media and online after the NYPD released it last month.

Pacoima man charged with stabbing 3 of ex-girlfriend's relatives, including infant girl
Attempted murder and other charges were filed today against a Pacoima man who allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend's 11-month-old sister and two of her other relatives in Panorama City, then led police on a chase that ended with a four-hour standoff in Glendale. Jorge Gomez, 21, pleaded not guilty to three attempted murder charges and one count each of first-degree residential burglary, fleeing a pursuing peace officer's motor vehicle while driving recklessly and resisting an executive officer, along with a misdemeanor count of hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage.

Shooter gets life sentence for killing four at Valley Village restaurant
A man who opened fire at a memorial event at a Valley Village restaurant, killing a close friend and three other people and wounding two others, was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo said Nerses Galstyan engaged in an “unprovoked attack” and called the 33-year-old defendant's actions “calculated,” “callous” and “extremely violent.”

Glendale Officers, ‘Real Heroes,' Recount Rescue of 78-Year-Old Woman From Balcony of Burning Home
The family of a 78-year-old woman who was rescued from the balcony of her burning Glendale home on Tuesday got a chance to meet and thank the police officers who saved her life. The Glendale Police Department officers were first on the scene early Monday as flames engulfed the woman's home in the 2000 block of Dublin Drive.

California Supreme Court halts voter-approved death penalty measure
The California Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked a voter-approved measure intended to speed up the appeals process for the state's death row inmates to give it time to consider a lawsuit challenging the measure. In a one-page decision, the court stayed the "implementation of all provisions of Proposition 66" and set a timeline for filing briefs in the case.

Death penalty in steep decline, but not in Los Angeles County
Los Angeles County and the state of California again recorded the most new death sentences this year, amid a sharp decline across the nation in both executions and new death sentences. Judges and juries in Los Angeles County imposed a death sentence on four murderers during 2016, including Lonnie Franklin Jr., the so-called “Grim Sleeper,” who was convicted of killing 10 women. No other county had more than one death sentence, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Death sentences and executions are down, but voters still support death penalty laws
In 2016, 30 people were sentenced to death in America, and 20 people were executed. Those numbers are the lowest in decades, according to a report by the Death Penalty Information Center, which collects data on capital punishment in the United States, and advocates against the death penalty. The 2016 numbers fit with a multi-decade trend. Death sentences and executions have been declining steadily since the mid-1990s.

Honolulu police chief on paid leave amid federal probe
Honolulu's police chief surrendered his gun and badge Tuesday and went on paid leave from the department after receiving notification that he is the target of a federal investigation. The investigation began more than a year ago. A federal grand jury is looking into allegations of civil rights abuses and corruption.

Canadian police launch pilot program for new roadside drug test
Police have launched a pilot program that will test drivers for recent presence of drugs in their saliva.  CBC reported that the program will test how well police can use the device on drivers in different weather conditions. The program will run until spring of next year.  Officers have to make an assessment on the driver before performing the test, according to the publication. Personal data won't be collected, but a variety of drugs will be tested by the device.

Race for vacant LA City Council seat will be crowded — as in 20 candidates
The crowded field of candidates jockeying to fill the northeast San Fernando Valley City Council seat vacated by Felipe Fuentes includes a stuntman, an LAUSD school board member, a former Public Works board member and two neighborhood council members. The City Clerk's Office Monday released a list of certified candidates for the March election that shows 20 hopefuls have officially entered the Seventh District race.
