Man Shot By Home Invasion Robbers In Northridge
A man suffered a graze wound to the ear Thursday while fighting off an intruder inside his home in Northridge. According to police, officers responded just before 11 p.m. Wednesday to a home located in the 9100 block of Encino Avenue for report of a home invasion robbery. Upon their arrival, authorities learned three masked men entered the home through the front door, which was unlocked.

2 LA murders are linked, and city offers $100,000 to solve them
Police are seeking the public's help in solving the murders of two young East Los Angeles women whose bodies were found alongside two Los Angeles freeways a few years ago. The Los Angles City Council, at the request of First District Councilmember Gil Cedillo, approved $100,000 in rewards, $50,000 for each murder, for information leading to the identity, arrest, and prosecution of the person or people responsible for the deaths of Michelle Lozano and Bree'Anna Guzman.

Tragedy Fuels LA Man's Self-Defense Course for Women
Maurice Gomez, of Los Angeles, considers teaching women to protect themselves his life's purpose, and he usually does it for free, NBC News reports. This purpose stems from a personal tragedy, when Gomez learned his girlfriend was raped and killed by a stranger, then left on the side of the road. "I put blame on myself because I should have been there," said Gomez, owner of MG Kenpo Academy in Duarte, California, and a tactical self-defense instructor for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police search for hit-and-run driver connected with North Hollywood death
Police were continuing a search for the driver behind the hit-and-run death of a man knocked into the street by a security guard outside a North Hollywood club last week and run over by a passing car, Los Angeles police said Tuesday. The curbside scuffle and death 47-year-old Apollo Rodriguez occurred early Thursday morning outside a club in the 6600 block of Lankershim Boulevard, according to LAPD Valley Bureau homicide detectives. The man was popped in the face, staggered into the street and then hit by a car.

LA sues to fight Crips gang activity at strip mall
The owner and one of the tenants of a South Los Angeles strip mall alleged to be a hotbed of gang activity are the targets of a lawsuit filed today by City Attorney Mike Feuer. Diamond Property Management Inc., which owns the center at 3312 W. Florence Ave., and Mohammad Mansour, the owner of African Tobacco, are named as defendants. Neither could not immediately be reached for comment.

Man Who Allegedly Confessed to Burying Body of Ex-Reality Show Contestant on Lennox Property Held on $2 Million Bail
The man who police said Tuesday confessed to burying the body of a missing former reality television show contestant at his home in Lennox has been arrested and booked into jail, according to inmate records. Police continued to search the yard of 34-year-old Jackie Jerome Rogers on Wednesday morning, one day after the female remains were discovered in a shallow grave on the property, which is located in the 5000 block of West 106th Street.

Two L.A. Sheriff's Deputies Share Ultimate Holiday Gift After Successful Kidney Transplant
After first meeting four years ago as mentor and trainee, two Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies on Wednesday shared the story of how their friendship deepened until the two became inextricably linked when one needed an organ transplant. On Nov. 29, Carson Sheriff's Sgt. Darrin Offringa underwent a four-hour surgery to provide a kidney to Lakewood Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Ay, who was diagnosed with renal failure in 2013, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Doctors successfully transplanted Offringa's left kidney, and he and Ay are both recovery well, authorities said.

Unattended Bags Prompt Police Probe At LAX On Busy Holiday Travel Day
Unattended bags prompted suspicious package probes at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday, creating chaos on what's already expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season. Authorities initially reported unspecified police activity at terminals 6 and 7 around 9:45 a.m. Shortly thereafter, Los Angeles Airport police said on Twitter that an "incident" at terminal 6 had been cleared, and the area was secure. As for terminal 7, airport officials said a suspicious item was found on a curb, and the terminal's screening area was briefly closed shortly after 10 a.m.

Alleged pimp tattooed his ‘Classified' nickname on teen girls
An alleged pimp is expected to be arraigned today on federal charges of trafficking a 16-year-old girl and advertising her services online as an Inland Empire-based prostitute. Lawrence Gunn Jr., 32, who was arrested without incident last month at a Woodland Hills apartment complex, faces felony charges of conspiracy and sex trafficking, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Gunn — also known as “Classified” — branded his prostitutes with tattoos of his nickname to mark his “stable” of sex workers, federal prosecutors allege.

'Special Master' Appointed To Review Evidence In Robert Durst Murder Trial
A judge agreed to appoint a "special master" to review evidence in the murder trial of real estate heir and former fugitive Robert Durst Wednesday. Durst appeared at the hearing and sat in a wheelchair. The 73-year-old faces one count of first-degree murder in the 2000 execution-style killing of his friend, Susan Berman. During his hearing, defense attorneys said they used warrants to obtain documents that were prompted by the six-part HBO documentary series Durst was part of. "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst" looked at his life and accusations against him for multiple crimes.

Why LA is seeing fewer fentanyl deaths even as trafficking rises in the region
A new federal analysis has found that deaths related to the powerful opioid fentanyl more than doubled nationally from 2013 to 2014. But the drug has not caught on in Los Angeles County, according to a senior public health official. At the same time, a federal drug official says more and more fentanyl is passing through California on its way to other parts of the country.

Aspiring poker star sentenced to prison for following casino players home and robbing them
A judge sentenced an aspiring poker player to nearly nine years in prison for targeting guests at Los Angeles-area casinos, following them home and robbing them. A jury convicted Dominick Blair Roberson, 27, in October of four counts of second-degree robbery and one count of attempted second-degree robbery, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Man who lifted $1.6-million pot of gold flakes in N.Y. could be in Los Angeles, police say
Police say a man who managed to snatch a pot of gold off an armored truck on a busy New York City street has made his way to Los Angeles. On Tuesday, the New York City Police Department identified its suspect as 53-year-old Julio Nivelo, who also goes by David Vargas. Police said they think Nivelo is hiding out in the Los Angeles area, although it is unclear if he is carrying the 86-pound load of gold.  The pot contained $1.6 million in gold flakes, police said.

This is the season for gun accidents. Deaths spike during the holidays
The happiest of seasons is also among the deadliest: Unintentional shootings spike during the holidays, and are more likely to occur than any other time of the year, according to an analysis by The Associated Press and the USA TODAY Network. In all, 32 people were killed nationwide and 59 injured over the past two years from Christmas Eve through New Year's Day, which the analysis identified as the most likely day for accidental shootings each year. The victims were mostly male and young, with a median age of 19. Nearly half the shootings were self-inflicted, and most occurred in their own homes.

Ala. officer in critical, but stable condition after being shot in head
A Saraland police officer shot early Wednesday morning has now been identified as Officer Jackie Tucker, according to WKRG. Tucker is listed in critical, but stable condition, reports say. According to Saraland Police Chief, James West, the suspect, Blake Richardson opened fire on two responding officers immediately, striking Turner in the head.

Body cam captures moment before fatal shooting of Ga. officers
The GBI released a video Wednesday from the killing of Americus police officer Nicholas Smarr. The video was captured on Smarr's body camera and shows a bit of what led up to the fatal shooting of Smarr and Georgia Southwestern State University campus policeman Jody Smith. The suspected shooter, Minguell Lembrick, was found dead the next day from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Los Angeles sues Boyle Heights recycling center after massive pile of trash burns for 6 weeks
A Boyle Heights recycling center is overrun with piles of trash two stories high and poses a health hazard to nearby businesses and the public, the Los Angeles city attorney's office claims in a lawsuit filed Wednesday. Seeking to put the Clean Up America property at 2900 E. Lugo St. into receivership following a smoldering fire in September that took weeks to put out, the city attorney's office says the property owners have shown “blatant disregard” for environmental and city regulations.

Measure S supporters file lawsuit over 'misleading' voter guide
Opponents of Measure S, an initiative that would block some large-scale real estate development in Los Angeles, have been accused in a lawsuit of submitting inaccurate statements for a city voter guide. L.A. resident Grace Yoo, in the suit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, said the ballot information cited “independent economic studies” showing lost jobs and tax revenue if Measure S were to pass.
