Police In LA's Central Division Put Special Twist On Toy Drive For Kids Who Need Them Most
Three years ago, several LAPD officers decided a toy drive simply wasn't enough. It's a toy drive that lets the children meet the men and women who are giving them the presents.. Christmas came early for 150 kids at the Union Rescue Mission Thursday. Pico-Union Man Accused Of Trying To Smuggle Heroin Through LAX In Christmas Wrapping
Authorities said a Pico-Union man and airport employee has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle heroin through LAX wrapped in Christmas packaging. James Mitchell, 25, was arrested Wednesday by special agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration after prosecutors on Tuesday filed a criminal complaint in United States District Court.

Man Injured in Northridge Home Invasion
A man suffered a graze wound to the ear while fighting off one of three intruders during a home invasion robbery at his home in Northridge, police said Thursday. The incident occurred at 10:57 p.m. Wednesday at 9102 Encino Ave. where police said the victim and his wife were in their living room when three masked men entered through the unlocked front door. The man confronted one of the robbers, who was armed, and tried to rip off his ski mask, said Sgt. Gabriel Colon of the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Division.

Police Hunt Hit-And-Run Driver That Left 51-Year-Old Woman Dead
Detectives with the LAPD's Central Traffic Division are looking for a hit-and-run driver that left a 51-year-old woman dead. The crash occurred Thursday around 6:20 am. at Avalon Boulevard and 43rd Street. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the location. The woman — a 51-year-old Latina and resident of Los Angeles — was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is withheld pending notification of her next of kin.

No charges for government critic who penned racist comments and images about L.A. City Council member
Prosecutors have declined to file charges against a vocal critic of the Los Angeles City Council who submitted a card during a public meeting with racially incendiary drawings, including a burning cross. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office said the card submitted by Encino attorney Wayne Spindler, which labeled City Council President Herb Wesson with a racial slur, was “deeply offensive, morally wrong and socially reprehensible,” according to a memo released Thursday.

Mistrial Declared After Jury Deadlocks in Ex-Sheriff Lee Baca's Federal Obstruction of Justice Trial
A mistrial has been declared in the federal obstruction of justice case against former Sheriff Lee Baca, who led the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for more than 15 years, after the jury deadlocked Thursday. The jury of six men and six women, meeting in the federal courthouse in downtown L.A., began deliberations Monday. The trial began Dec. 7.

SF police commission votes to prohibit shooting at moving vehicles
The San Francisco Police Commission approved a use-of-force policy Wednesday that would prohibit the city's police officers from shooting at moving vehicles or using carotid restraints. The policy passed unanimously despite several hours of heated debate and harsh words from members of the public — as well as a lawsuit filed by the police union on Tuesday over the stalled negotiations regarding those two specific sections of the policy.

NYPD: Record drop in shootings, serious crimes projected
New York City will likely end 2016 with the lowest level of shootings in modern history and could come close to dipping under 100,000 serious crimes, also a record, NYPD officials said Wednesday. The crime numbers are shaping up to make 2016 a “stellar year” for the city, said Dermot Shea, chief of crime control strategies for the NYPD, during a briefing with reporters.

Man Who Took Pleasure In Cop's Death Held On Threat Charges
An 18-year-old who once went on a profanity-laced tirade in a Massachusetts police station lobby to express pleasure at an officer's death has been held without bail on accusations that he threatened to "shoot up" his former school. Marcus Rodriguez was held as a danger to society at a court hearing Thursday.

Texas cop receives hateful message on restaurant receipt
A uniformed officer who stopped to grab lunch at a local Schlotzsky's recently was surprised when he saw a special message on his receipt. The deputy pulled through the drive-thru and looked down at his receipt to see the message “Fck U,” according to the department's Facebook page. The officer called the restaurant to report the incident, and the employee has since been fired, KHOU reported.

Three skyscrapers planned near L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles by Chinese developer
Chinese developer City Century filed an application with city officials this week to build three residential towers across from L.A. Live as breakneck growth rolls on through downtown Los Angeles. The complex, called Olympia, could cost as much as $1 billion and house as many as 1,367 apartments or condominiums over shops and restaurants along Olympic Boulevard.
