2 LA Police Officers Go Above, Beyond For Woman Who Loses Mother
In October, Orina Dallas' mother, her only family, suddenly died – leaving her alone in their Highland Park apartment. “I was shocked. I was not expect this to happen,” said the 44-year-old woman, who has developmental and intellectual disabilities. After a neighbor called 911, Los Angeles police officers Stephanie Hodgden and Vanessa Prentice from the LAPD's Rampart Division responded.

Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Shooting Woman In Sherman Oaks
A man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting a woman in Sherman Oaks, police said Monday. The shooting was reported shortly after 5 a.m. in the 15200 block of Valleyheart Drive near Sepulveda Boulevard. Officers responded to report of a woman screaming for help in the area. Upon their arrival, authorities located two shooting victims.

2 hospitalized after suspect opens fire on them in Wilmington
Authorities are searching for a suspect who opened fire on two people at an intersection in Wilmington Monday afternoon. The incident happened around noon at the intersection of Broad Avenue and Anaheim Street. Police said a suspect pulled up and opened fire on the victims who were in a car at the intersection. Both people were shot and taken to a hospital. The driver was listed in critical condition, while the passenger was in stable.

Man Killed In Mid-City Car Crash
A man in his 50s died Christmas Day after a crash in Mid-City. The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of San Vincente and Venice boulevards. Authorities said the man, who was driving a Toyota Prius, crashed into a Kia at the intersection. The Prius driver then hit a parked car and stopped near a Bank of America. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Feds had a win streak in L.A. jails scandal. Then they took on the former boss
The team of federal prosecutors was on a roll. For nearly five years, the Public Corruption and Civil Rights section of the U.S. attorney's office had been building and winning cases against a group from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department accused of carrying out a plan to obstruct a federal investigation into allegations of inmate abuse at the county jails.

The pressure is on for Jackie Lacey, L.A.'s first black district attorney, after high-profile police killings
In her latest test, Lacey has to decide whether to file charges in two high-profile killings of black men by police, including one in which Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck has publicly urged her to prosecute the officer who shot an unarmed man in the back near the Venice boardwalk last year. The decisions, and the larger issue of how prosecutors deal with police force, weigh heavily on the otherwise popular Lacey, who this year became the county's first district attorney to win reelection without a challenger in 60 years.

Too Much to Drink? Metro's Offering Free Rides During the Holidays
Too much to drink on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve? Instead of driving, take a free bus or train instead. Metro will offer free rides on its bus and rail lines from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Fare gates at rail stations will be unlocked during those hours, and there will be no need to tap a TAP card. Anyone who mistakenly does so will not be charged, according to Metro.

LAX worker arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle gift-wrapped heroin on plane
A Los Angeles man who works at Los Angeles International Airport is facing federal drug trafficking charges, accused of trying to smuggle around two pounds of heroin wrapped in Christmas paper onto a jetliner. James Mitchell, who lives in the Pico-Union neighborhood, was arrested Wednesday by special agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration after prosecutors filed a criminal complaint in Los Angeles federal court, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris files new pimping and money-laundering charges against operators of Backpage.com
Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris announced new criminal charges Friday against the operators of classified ad website Backpage.com, accusing them of laundering earnings from escorts as well as pimping children and adult women on their websites. The charges come two weeks after a Sacramento judge threw out pimping charges against the same three men, ruling that websites such as Backpage.com — which Harris had condemned as the “world's top online brothel” — are protected from lawsuits when they publish speech posted by other people.

New California laws bump up minimum wage, tighten gun laws
Lawmakers passed a package of bills to strengthen California's already tough gun laws then voters reinforced them by passing even more measures. People who own magazines that hold more than 10 rounds will be required to give them up starting Jan. 1. Buyers must undergo a background check before purchasing ammunition and will be barred from buying new weapons that have a device known as a bullet button.

Cell-tracking case appealed to full US 7th Circuit Court
A dissenting opinion by a federal appeals court judge on police use of secret cellphone tracking technology has convinced a Milwaukee man to take his case a step further. Attorneys for Damian Patrick filed a petition this week asking for a rehearing in front of the full U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, after losing a split decision in November to the court's three-judge panel. It's the first time the use of cell tower simulators, known as stingrays, has reached a federal appellate court, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Brawls Break Out Between Hundreds of Teens at Malls Across U.S.
Disturbances that included gunfire, massive brawls and food-court fights played out at more than a dozen malls across the country in what proved to be a chaotic day after Christmas. The disturbances, some of which were captured on social media, prevented some shoppers from clearing off clearance racks and returning Christmas gifts as they intended.

LAPD investigating possible threat, security breach at City Hall
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it is investigating a potential threat against several City Council members and a security breach at City Hall. The investigation began after a serrated, metal cutting tool was found in the council chamber sitting on top of an agenda form with some of the council members' names underlined, and with dates written next to them.

Chargers Take Another Step Closer To LA
Since the San Diego Chargers have a “1-year option” to join the Rams in 2019 at the Inglewood Stadium, the team on Friday signed a tentative agreement to lease a building and about three acres of land in Costa Mesa . Chargers owner Dean Spanos is expected to make a decision on the move next month.
