Woman Dies In Highland Park Shooting; Gunman Sought
A woman died Wednesday after succumbing to injuries she sustained in a shooting at a Highland Park intersection.  Authorities said the shooting happened at the intersection of Avenue 54 and Monte Vista Street around 11 a.m. They said a man shot the woman once  It was unclear if the shooting was gang related or if the woman was targeted.

Man shot, killed at Los Angeles High Memorial Park
A man was gunned down at Los Angeles High Memorial Park in the Mid-City area early Wednesday. The fatal shooting occurred about 3:30 a.m. near the 4600 block of West Olympic Boulevard, according to Los Angeles police. Officers from the LAPD's Wilshire Division responded to a “shots fired” call in the park and found the man on the ground, unresponsive and unconscious, with gunshot wounds.

Burglar who pointed gun at dog in El Sereno home sought
Authorities Thursday were seeking a burglar who forced his way into an El Sereno home and pointed a gun at a dog that confronted him inside the residence. The suspect — a man between 25 and 35 years old — entered the home in the 4900 block of Twining Street on Dec. 21 and took unspecified property, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Ore. trooper critically wounded in shooting on 'good trajectory'
The Oregon State Police trooper injured in a Christmas Day shooting had his third surgery Wednesday morning and remains in critical condition, police officials said. Trooper Nic Cederberg's latest operation went as expected and he's "on a good trajectory considering the trauma he suffered," state police officials said in a Facebook post.

Barricades, Bomb-Sniffing Dogs Part of Rose Parade Security Plan
With hundreds of thousands of people expected along Monday's 5 1/2-mile Rose Parade route, law enforcement agencies "cannot do it alone" when it comes to security and anti-terrorism efforts, officials said Wednesday. A team of agencies will assist Pasadena police in providing security for the parade and Rose Bowl football game, including the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

150th Baby Safely Surrendered Since LA County's Program Began in 2001

For the eighth time this year, a newborn baby was safely turned over to authorities under the Los Angeles County Safe Surrender Program, Supervisor Janice Hahn announced Wednesday. The baby boy was surrendered Tuesday at a hospital in Pomona, according to Hahn's office.

This Manson family member is the longest-serving woman in California prisons. Will she get parole?
Confined to a California prison since 1971, former Manson family member and convicted murderer Patricia Krenwinkel is now the longest-serving female inmate in the state's correctional system. On Thursday, the 69-year-old will have a chance at freedom when a review board considers whether to recommend her for parole.

DMV licensed 800,000 undocumented immigrants under 2-year-old law
Two years after the implementation of AB 60 on Jan. 1, 2015, an estimated 806,000 undocumented residents have received driver's licenses, according to Department of Motor Vehicles statistics this month. About 14,000 of these licenses were issued in November alone, the DMV said.

As we leave more digital tracks, Amazon Echo factors in murder investigation
Amazon's personal assistant device called Echo was one of the most popular gifts this Christmas. But this week, the device grabbed headlines for another reason: Police in Arkansas are trying to use its data in a murder investigation. As the police were investigating the crime, they found a number of digital devices in the suspect's house, including an Amazon Echo device that was in the kitchen. They have since seized the device and have apparently gotten some information from it, but what they want to check is what — if anything — the device may have recorded around the time of the murder.

How the perceived 'war on cops' plays into politics and policing
"There has been an increase in the total number," says Seth Stoughton, a former cop who is now an assistant professor of law at the University of South Carolina. Stoughton been tracking premeditated murders of law enforcement officers — what he calls police assassinations — and he says the number of police killed like this jumped from five or six last year, to somewhere in the neighborhood of eight to 12, this year.

'My babies are inside the house': Twin boys die in South L.A. blaze
Neighbors and firefighters hammered at the burning home with axes and a sledgehammer and struggled to pull the red-hot security bars off the windows, but in the end they were too late to save the boys. Hours after fire consumed a home in the Green Meadows neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday night — leaving a pair of 2-year-old twins dead and their father in critical condition — a witness recounted the chaotic scene as would-be rescuers broke windows and doors in a desperate attempt to reach the toddlers.

1 Dead After Vehicle Plummets From Overpass Onto 110 Freeway In Downtown LA
A person was killed Thursday morning when a car drove off an overpass in downtown Los Angeles, overturned and landed on the 110 Freeway below, authorities said.  All northbound lanes were temporarily closed after the 4 a.m. crash, which occurred at Third Street and prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a SigAlert.

Political donations flow as Rick Caruso seeks approval for a 20-story tower near the Beverly Center
Real estate developer Rick Caruso has been a reliable benefactor at Los Angeles City Hall, giving donations big and small to the city's politicians and their pet causes. Caruso, known for the Grove and other shopping destinations, has donated to all but one of the city's 17 elected officials. His charitable foundation provided $125,000 to a nonprofit set up by Mayor Eric Garcetti. And his companies recently gave $200,000 to the campaign for Measure M, the sales tax hike Garcetti championed in last month's election.
