Officers killed in the line of duty rose in 2016
The number of police killed in the line of duty rose sharply in 2016, driven by shootings of police around the country, most notably ambushes in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. From Jan. 1 through Wednesday, 135 officers lost their lives. Some died in traffic accidents, but nearly half were shot to death.

Black Lives Matter Activist Hit With Restraining Order From L.A. Police Commissioner
The president of the Los Angeles Police Commission has filed a request for a temporary restraining order against a prominent member of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, alleging a pattern of stalking and violent threats. According to the order, the commission president feared for his life and the safety of his family.

LAPD Steps Up The Hunt For Missing Couple
Detectives with the LAPD's Missing Persons Unit are hoping the public can help them track down a missing couple. Olivia Hannah Gonzalez and Brian Fernandez were last seen on Friday, December 23. The couple left for a weekend trip to Big Sur and were expected to return home on Christmas Day. The couple's families have not heard from them and are concerned about their welfare.

Girl, 6, Kidnapped In Stolen Vehicle Reunited With Family
A 6-year-old girl kidnapped in a stolen car was reunited with her mother, who held her baby tight after the scare Thursday in South Los Angeles. The girl's mother ran into the laundromat located in the 7800 block of Broadway in the Florence area at 2 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department said. She had gone in and left the keys in the ignition and car running, with her daughter apparently inside, police said.

Woman shot to death on Highland Park street corner is identified
A woman who was shot to death while standing on a street corner in Highland Park on Wednesday afternoon was identified by the Los Angeles County coroner's office Thursday as 23-year-old Jessica Andrea Rocha.Rocha was standing near North Avenue 56 and Monte Vista Street shortly before 11 a.m. when a person walked up and shot her, according to the coroner's office and Det. Martee Miyakawa with the Los Angeles Police Department's Northeast Division.

Teen Victim Rescued After Alert Uber Driver Leads Police to Sex Trafficking Arrests Near Sacramento
Police are crediting an Uber driver with helping rescue a 16-year-old girl from alleged child sex traffickers in Elk Grove, outside Sacramento. The driver, Keith Avila, gave a ride to the alleged teen victim and two suspect older female pimps on Monday night. He figured out something might be wrong shortly after picking them up in Sacramento.

California needs a specific ban on smoking pot while driving, these lawmakers say
Two state legislators say Californians might think it's illegal to smoke marijuana while driving, but that there's no specific ban on the practice in state law. Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell) and Sen. Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) said Thursday that they'll introduce legislation to close what they call a loophole.

Celebrating New Year's Eve with gunfire can get you arrested, police warn
Ahead of New Year's Eve, Long Beach police warned revelers not to let loose any gunfire as part of their celebration. Shooting a gun into the air can be deadly when the bullet comes back down, the department said in a news release. “In most instances when a falling bullet strikes a person, it does so in the head or upper body and is likely to cause serious injury or death,” police said.

Decision on former Manson follower Patricia Krenwinkel's parole postponed after attorney makes new claims
State parole officials Thursday postponed a decision on setting free Patricia Krenwinkel, a follower of Charles Manson and convicted killer, after the woman's attorney made new claims that she had been abused by Manson or another person. The two-person panel from the the Board of Parole Hearings “felt information discussed at the hearing was cause for an investigation,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.

Metro Rail, Bus Lines Will Run for 24 Hours Over New Year's Holiday; No Fare Will Be Charged Overnight New Year's Eve
Metro will offer 24 hour service on rail and bus lines over the New Year's holiday and no fare will be charged from 9 p.m. New Year's Eve until 2 a.m. New Year's Day, officials said this week . The lines will run on regular Saturday schedule on New Year's Eve in addition to the 24-hour service, but on the holiday/Sunday schedule on New Year's Day.

Mother Talks About Losing 2-Year-Old Twin Boys In Watts House Fire
A vigil was held Thursday night for 2-year-old twin boys who died in a house fire in Watts, and their mother talked about her loss. "They're very beautiful...just full of love and joy," Charlotte Fortson said. "I would do anything just to have that back. Anything just to have them come hug me in the morning and say, 'Mommy.'"

Koretz pulls his support for Caruso's proposed 20-story tower, calling it 'too tall'
Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz, under fire from an opponent in the March election, said Thursday that he has pulled his support for a controversial 20-story residential tower proposed near the Beverly Center. Koretz, standing on La Cienega Boulevard near the project site, said he now thinks the planned apartment building is “too tall” — and wants real estate developer Rick Caruso to enter into additional talks with a homeowners group.

LA councilman defends proposal on banning single adults from playgrounds
Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell Thursday defended his proposal to limit access at playgrounds to children and their accompanying parents or guardians. Under a motion introduced by O'Farrell at a City Council meeting on Dec. 14, the city attorney, with the assistance of the Department of Recreation and Parks, would be directed to prepare and present a draft ordinance on the issue .
