LA Sheriff's Body Cam Plan Would Permit Release Of Some Video
After two years of study, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has prepared a proposal to equip nearly 6,000 deputies with body cameras, and to enact a policy that permits the release of at least some video shot by officers. The L.A. County Board of Supervisors needs to approve the plan, which, when fully implemented, would cost $55 million dollars a year. Sheriff Jim McDonnell's proposal calls for releasing body cam video to the public upon request unless it involves incidents still under investigation or would violate someone's privacy, according to Dean Gialamas, the department's director of technology services.

After Bay Area Violence, California Debates Classifying 'Antifa' As A Street Gang
Not long after dozens of black-hooded protesters were filmed pummeling people on his city's streets, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin made clear his disgust for the self-stylized vigilantes. “Antifa,” he said, is no different than a street gang, and police should start treating protesters in the anti-fascist movement accordingly. Later that day, legislators in Sacramento advanced resolutions that would treat violent acts committed by antifa movement's enemies — white nationalists and neo-Nazis — as terrorist acts under state law. Criminal Justice Reform Push Losing Momentum
Not only has it been a disappointing year for the lawmakers and civic leaders behind the recent push for sweeping reforms of California's criminal justice system, their achievements are under harsh fire in Los Angeles County. Last December, Assemblyman Rob Bonta, D-Oakland, and state Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Los Angeles, proposed to largely scrap cash bail on the grounds that it wasn't essential to getting people to show up for their trials, was destructive of individuals' lives and would sharply reduce costs and crowding at county jails.

California Senate Bill 384, known as the LOCAL Act, did not make it through the Assembly Appropriations Committee Friday. Authored by state Sen. La Tuna Fire In Los Angeles Grows To Thousands Of Acres, ‘Largest' Brush Fire In City History
A rapidly intensifying brush fire blazing 5,000 acres in the Los Angeles area Saturday forced hundreds of evacuations — just as firefighters contend with record high temperatures scorching across the state. At a morning news conference, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said the city has never witnessed an inferno of this magnitude in terms of acres, calling it the "largest fire in the history of Los Angeles," and that it had been 45 years since one has occurred in the area, allowing for "plenty of fuel to burn." Law enforcement was assuring individuals who are leery of evacuating that police would remain in the area to protect and secure their homes. "We have sufficient resources to make sure safety is first and foremost," said Los Angeles police Cmdr. Jorge Rodriguez, adding, "We are here to make sure their property is safe if they evacuate."

Kendall Bryant was sitting at her desk in Virginia when she got the plea for help from South Los Angeles. A woman had found an injured poodle in an alley, its white fur matted and dirty, and its small body shaking and circled by flies. She feared that if she moved the dog, she might hurt the animal even more. She had tried to call the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services for help. But over and over, the woman said, she got disconnected. So she emailed Bryant, who works for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. “I don't know what to do,” the woman wrote.
