We support peaceful assembly, but attacks on law enforcement must end
Recently, we denounced the actions and beliefs of Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, anti-Semites and the Ku Klux Klan. There is no place in our country for these hateful individuals and their organizations. The repugnant rhetoric spewed by these individuals and their organizations should be met with strong and peaceful opposition. As police officers, we are duty-bound to protect anyone who peacefully assembles to exercise their constitutional rights to express themselves. Unfortunately, some individuals are exploiting the protection that law enforcement is providing to keep the peace as an opportunity to physically attack police officers. This must end now.

Judge Halts L.A. Gang Injunction Against An Echo Park Man Who Denies Being In A Gang
A federal judge on Thursday temporarily barred Los Angeles police and prosecutors from enforcing a gang injunction against an Echo Park man, saying she believed he would likely prove his rights were violated when he was swept up in the order. The 29-page order stems from a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups last year. The suit accuses police of violating Peter Arellano's due process rights — and those of thousands of other people — by serving them with gang injunctions without allowing them to first contest the orders in court.

A state appeals court panel Thursday upheld a man's conviction for fatally stabbing his live-in girlfriend's 11-year-old son in front of the boy's younger brother in Los Angeles more than four years ago. The three-justice panel from California's 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected the defense's contention that Rineson Curtis Adams' conviction for the May 27, 2013, stabbing of the boy — identified only as “Jai L.” — should be reduced from first-degree murder to second-degree murder.

California Colleges Vow To Press On Against Sexual Assault Despite Any Federal Rollback In Protections
California educational leaders vowed Thursday to press on with aggressive action against campus sexual assault despite any future rollback of the federal guidelines that have prompted universities to crack down on the problem. In a speech Thursday, U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos lambasted Obama-era guidelines as unfair and coercive and announced plans to review them. Later, in an interview with CBS News, she said she intended to rescind the 2011 guidelines, which laid out how campuses should investigate sexual assault cases and lowered the standard of proof needed to find the accused responsible.

Purposely Exposing Someone To HIV Could Go From Felony To Misdemeanor In California
California lawmakers have voted to reduce the penalty for intentionally exposing someone to HIV from a felony to a misdemeanor. Supporters say existing laws are relics of the decades-old AIDS scare. The bill passed Thursday by the Assembly, 44-13, would treat HIV like other communicable diseases under federal law. It requires final Senate approval before heading to Gov. Jerry Brown. Assemblyman Todd Gloria says current laws discriminate against people living with HIV and deter people from being tested.
