26 Killed In Church Attack In Texas' Deadliest Mass Shooting
A man dressed in black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside a church in a small South Texas community on Sunday, killing 26 people and wounding about 20 in what the governor called the deadliest mass shooting in the state's history. The dead ranged in age from 5 to 72 years old.

LAPD Captain Accuses Department Of Twisting Crime Statistics To Make City Seem Safer
Los Angeles Police Department captain has accused high-ranking members of the force of misclassifying violent crime and misleading the public about the true state of lawbreaking in the city. Capt. Lillian Carranza, who oversees the LAPD's Van Nuys station, alleged in a claim filed against the city last week that she began notifying superiors in 2014 about the underreporting of crime in the Foothill area, which includes Pacoima, Sunland and Tujunga — but no action was taken.

Idaho Jury Votes For Death Penalty After Officer Killed
A jury has unanimously decided that a 29-year-old man who shot and killed a northern Idaho police officer should be sentenced to death. The 12-member panel reached the decision Saturday morning. The same jury last month found Jonathan Renfro guilty of first-degree murder for the May 2015 killing of Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore.

Man Who Shot NJ Cop At Point-Blank Range Charged With Attempted Murder
A New Jersey man was charged Thursday with shooting a police officer in the thigh at close range after a struggle while he was trying to run away from him. Camden County police say the officer approached three people who were acting suspiciously just after 10 p.m. Wednesday in Camden when one ran away.

Texas Trooper Dies In Fiery Crash While Conducting Traffic Stop
A State Trooper died Saturday in a fiery crash after he was conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 35 in Temple and was struck from behind, authorities said. Thomas Nipper, 63, was on the southbound shoulder of I-35 about 3:05 p.m. when he was struck by a Chevrolet pickup, authorities said in a news release.

Illinois Cop, Another Person Dead After Traffic Stop
A Rockford Police officer was found dead near a traffic crash and a person was dead in a vehicle early Sunday following a possible shooting, police Chief Dan O'Shea said. Jaimie Cox, 30, made a traffic stop near East State Street and Dawn Avenue in Rockford about 1 a.m. Sunday before making a "brief radio transmission indicating he needed assistance," O'Shea said at a news conference.

Baltimore Police Say Off-Duty DC Officer Fatally Shot
Authorities say an off-duty Washington, D.C., police sergeant was fatally shot while sitting in a parked car in Baltimore and a woman with him was injured. Baltimore police said in a statement that officers found 40-year-old Tony Anthony Mason Jr. with gunshot wounds early Saturday morning. He died of his injuries at a hospital.

California Man Arrested In Alleged Plot To Ambush, Kill Police Officers
A California man is behind bars Sunday after police say he was actively planning to ambush and kill police officers. Police arrested 39-year-old Oscar Rene Parra Rincon and booked him on suspicion of attempted murder, among other charges.

Pair Of Sexual Assault, Battery Cases In Valley May Be Connected, LAPD Says
Two cases nearly five months apart — a sexual battery in Valley Glen and sexual assault in Lake Balboa — are believed to be connected, authorities said this week. The sketches and description of the man wanted in the Oct. 26 Valley Glen and June 1 Lake Balboa cases appears to point to a single suspect in both crimes, said Los Angeles Police Department Detective Ninette Toosbuy.

DUI Suspected In Single-Car Crash That Injured 3 In Studio City Area
A solo vehicle crash off the 101 Freeway in the Studio City area early Sunday, Nov. 5 resulted in three people treated at local hospitals for serious injuries, according to Los Angeles police. A vehicle exited the 101 Freeway and instead of turning right or left, continued straight onto the roadway and crashed into some type of stationary object, LAPD Officer J. Guzman of the Valley Traffic Division said.

A man led police Friday on a chase in a stolen car from Los Angeles to Alhambra, where he ran onto the campus of Mark Keppel High School and was arrested. Los Angeles Police Department officers began chasing the Honda in their jurisdiction late this morning.

Police Arrest 2 Suspects In Gang-Related Wilmington Slayings
A teenage gang member has been arrested in the slaying of a 19-year-old Banning High School graduate killed outside a weekend Halloween party in Wilmington, police announced Friday. In addition, police said a teen also has been arrested in the unrelated slaying of a Narbonne High School student killed in Wilmington just days before graduation in June.

Police in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles are hoping the public can help them find a missing man. Brett Matthew Escalera Jr. is a resident of Santa Barbara but was last seen in LA at an event. Escalera Jr. 20, is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, about 160 pounds, with brown hair and eyes.

In Formal Vote, L.A. Replaces Columbus Day With Indigenous Peoples Day
The Los Angeles City Council approved an amended ordinance Friday replacing Columbus Day in October with Indigenous Peoples Day as an official L.A. holiday. The council already debated the issue in August, when it asked the city attorney to draft the ordinance, so the vote in approval of the language of the ordinance was, in essence, a formality.
