Man Who Shot And Killed NY Trooper Granted Parole
John Ruzas, a man who shot to death New York State Trooper Emerson Dillon on the Thruway near Canastota in 1974, has been granted parole, a state corrections department spokeswoman said Monday. Ruzas, who was 32 at the time and is now in 74, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. NYS State Police Benevolent Association President Thomas H. Mungeer today called the parole board's decision "a travesty of justice."

Footage released Thursday shows a suspect fire a shotgun at a Minnesota police officer w during a traffic stop. WXOW reports that on July 31, La Crescent Officer Ryan Quanrud and Officer Christopher Frick pulling over a vehicle after they saw two men behaving suspiciously.

NY Deputy Dies Suddenly While Training For Triathlon
A New York deputy collapsed and died suddenly while training for a triathlon on Sunday. WRGB reports that Deputy Sheriff John Brown, 45, was running by himself near his home when he suddenly collapsed. Police said he was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

15-Month-Old Boy Missing After Being Taken By Father In Boyle Heights: LAPD
Police are asking for the public's help finding a "critical missing" 15-month-old boy who hasn't been seen since he was taken by his biological father from the family's home in Boyle Heights on Tuesday afternoon. About 4 p.m., officials with the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services responded to the residence in the 2200 block of East Fourth Street to remove the child from his parent's home and place the boy into protective custody, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Brush Fire Burns Roughly 5 Acres In Sylmar; Person In Custody On Suspicion Of Starting Blaze
A fire that may have been intentionally or carelessly set burned around five acres of brush in Sylmar Tuesday afternoon. More than 93 firefighters, including from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Angeles National Forest, joined the battle amid concerns the flames had the “potential to make a run,” according to Stewart.

Reports Of Rape, Assault And Dating Violence Spiked At UCLA In 2016, Data Shows
Rapes reported in UCLA's jurisdiction doubled in 2016 while reported aggravated assaults tripled, according to an annual crime report issued by the university. There were 31 alleged rapes reported last year, up from 15 reports the previous year and 25 reports in 2014, according to the 2017 UCLA Annual Security and Fire Safety Report  released last month.

Deputy Shootings In LA County Decrease, Inmate Deaths Pose Serious Problem
Deputy-involved shootings during the first nine months of the year were down significantly from the same period four years ago, Los Angeles County's inspector general said Tuesday. The 15 shootings that occurred between January and September represent a more than 50 percent drop from the same period in 2013, when 33 deputy- involved shootings were reported.

San Jose residents next year can buy marijuana at any of the city's 16 licensed medical pot shops, the City Council decided in a unanimous vote on Tuesday. Rancho Tehama Shooting: At Least 4 People Killed At Multiple Locations
A shooter in Northern California has killed at least four people in a violent rampage that began at a home and ultimately included seven locations, including an elementary school, officials say. The shooter was killed by police, bringing the total death toll to five. Ten people have been hospitalized, authorities say.

Should Brick-And-Mortar Shops Be Able To Veto Sidewalk Vendors?
When pushcart vendors try to set up shop in front of his East Hollywood gas station, Jacques Massachi tells them to leave. “I don't allow them. I just don't allow them,” Massachi said. The sidewalk sellers can end up obstructing traffic in and out of the gas station, he complained. And if they hawk hot dogs, ice cream or anything else sold at his Ampm store, he sees them as rivals. If someone can walk up and buy a hot dog out front, Massachi said, “why would he buy a hot dog from me?”

L.A. County May Begin Routine Inspections Of Massage Parlors For Signs Of Sex Trafficking
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn previewed a proposal Tuesday to have massage parlors routinely inspected by health officials looking for signs of sex trafficking. “Human trafficking is not constrained to sex trafficking, but also for people who might be forced to work or people who might not be receiving appropriate payment for their services.
