Baltimore Police Detective Shot In The Head Dies
A Baltimore homicide detective died Thursday less than 24 hours after he was shot in the head while working in a neighborhood of vacant lots and boarded-up row houses. At a news conference outside a hospital, Police Commissioner Kevin Davis told reporters that 43-year-old Sean Suiter, an 18-year veteran of the department, was pronounced dead shortly after noon.

Ohio Cop In Critical Condition After Being Shot In The Face Police in Ohio say an officer is in critical condition after being shot in the face during a drug raid at a home in Toledo. A police spokesman describes the officer's injuries as "very serious," but not believed to be life threatening. Toledo Police Chief George Kral says the officer was standing about 30 yards away when SWAT officers knocked on a door and tried to enter the home early Thursday.

2 Children Dead After On-Duty Deputy Vehicle Strikes 5 Pedestrians In Boyle Heights Area Two children were killed, and three others were injured when several pedestrians were struck during a multi-vehicle crash involving an on-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputy vehicle Thursday night in the Boyle Heights area, authorities said.The deputies were responding to an emergency call of a gunshot victim and traveling southbound on Indiana when a three-vehicle collision took place near Whittier, LAPD Captain Alfonso Lopez said at a late-night news conference at the scene.

White Supremacist Hate Crimes, Violence Against Transgender People Surge In LA County, Report Finds
Nearly a quarter of all hate crimes reported in Los Angeles County last year were based on sexual orientation, making gay men, lesbians and LGBT organizations the group most frequently targeted for the first time in many years, according to a new report. The last time the number of homophobic hate crimes exceeded the number of anti-black crimes was in 2002, according to the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations.

Who Killed Michael Jordan Strom? Oregon Man Run Down By Hit-And-Run Driver In South LA
Police sought the public's help Thursday finding a hit-and-run driver whose vehicle struck and killed a 26-year-old Oregon man who was visiting family in South Los Angeles. Michael Jordan Strom of Salem, Oregon, was in Los Angeles visiting his father and brother when he was struck about 7:50 p.m. Oct. 22 as he crossed Slauson Avenue west of Western Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Convicted Murderer Confesses To Slaying Girlfriend, Infant Son Who Went Missing In LA
A man imprisoned in Oregon has confessed to killing his girlfriend and the couple's infant son, who were reported missing in 2009 in Los Angeles, CNN reported Thursday. Thomas Riffenberg, 31, who is serving a life sentence for stomping a cellmate to death, confessed to suffocating 23-year-old Jennifer Anne Walsh and her 16-month old son, Alexander, in a letter to an Oregon Department of Justice agent, who Riffenberg later met face to face and provided hand-drawn maps showing the supposed locations of the buried bodies, according to the CNN report.

Human Trafficking Sting In Compton: Task Force Rescues Teen, Arrests 39
A human trafficking sting in Compton resulted in 39 arrests and the rescue of a 13-year-old girl, authorities said. The girl was released to the care of the Department of Children and Family Services at the conclusion of the human trafficking operation, which was conducted Wednesday by the Los Angeles Regional Human Trafficking Task Force, along with deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Compton Station.

L.A. County Leaders Make A Plea To Feds In Push To Keep Funds For Homeless Veterans
Officials at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs decided in September to put local VA officials in charge of $264 million that had previously been set aside for specific programs to help homeless veterans. VA officials in Washington say the directive will help the agency's medical directors around the country respond to the changing needs of veterans as it seeks to improve medical care and prevent suicides.
