CHP Officer Dies After Suspected DUI Driver Slams Into Back Of Patrol SUV On Bay Area Highway
A California Highway Patrol officer was killed and a second injured late Sunday night when a suspected DUI driver slammed into their patrol SUV as it was parked on the side of Highway 880 near Hayward, authorities said on Christmas. Officers responded shortly before midnight to reports of a collision in the southbound lanes of Interstate-880 just north of Highway 92 involving a red car and a CHP vehicle, Bay Area television station KPIX  reported.

A 6-year-old girl is dealing with her first Christmas without her mom after she was killed in a hit-and-run this summer. As part of the Los Angeles Police Protective League's Blue Christmas program, LAPD officers are trying to lessen the family's pain during the holidays.

LAPD Officers Help Woman Deliver Christmas Baby
Los Angeles police officers helped deliver a very special Christmas present for one local woman: a healthy baby girl. Officers from LAPD's Central Area were called to a Main Street building Monday afternoon for what initially came in as a woman screaming. They arrived to the building, went up to the fifth floor and found a young woman who was indeed screaming - because she was pregnant and clearly in distress.

Man Wielding Machete Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting
A man armed with a machete was shot dead by LAPD officers after he began to attack a local resident in Canoga Park Saturday night. It happened after 7:00 p.m. in the 8100 block of De Soto Avenue, police said. Police shot at the attacker as they arrived on scene. The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. No officers were injured.

Woman Left To Die After Being Struck By South L.A. Hit-And-Run Driver On Christmas
A woman was left to die after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw neighborhood of South Los Angeles on Christmas Day. The crash occurred about 9 p.m. in the 4100 block of South Crenshaw Boulevard. A black four-door Nissan Murano struck a woman in her 50s and left the scene without the driver rendering any aid to the victim, Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Adams said.

North Hills Drive-By Shooting Leaves Man Wounded
One man was shot and wounded Sunday night in a drive-by attack in North Hills, a police sergeant said. The shooting took place in the 9200 block of Burnet Avenue about 9:40 p.m., according to Los Angeles police Sgt. Andrew Kukla. “The victim was standing outside when a car drove up and someone fired a number of shots at him,” Kukla said.

To be vigilant and engaged is the focus of Los Angeles law enforcement during this peak holiday travel rush, but they want to remind everyone there are no specific threats in Southern California. Australia's car attack is just the latest example of terror focused on large crowds, and large crowds are a common occurrence in L.A. this time of year.

Possible Arson At Sylmar Auto Dealership Under Investigation
Authorities are investigating a possible arson at an auto dealership in Sylmar where at least four vehicles caught fire Monday morning. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene in the 12400 block of North San Fernando Road at 5:05 a.m., said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

FBI: Man Wanted To Attack San Francisco's Pier 39 On Holiday
The FBI said Friday that it found a martyrdom letter and several guns in the home of a former Marine who said he wanted to carry out a Christmas Day attack on San Francisco's Pier 39, a popular tourist destination. Everitt Aaron Jameson, 26, a Modesto tow-truck driver, was charged Friday with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Man Charged With Attempted Murder After 2 Virginia Deputies Shot
A Virginia man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he shot two sheriff's deputies on Christmas Eve . The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office says 39-year-old Douglas V. Johnson Jr. was arrested Sunday night after a domestic incident in Sterling, Virginia, about 30 miles northwest of Washington.

Creek Fire In Sylmar Expected To Be Contained By End Of Day Saturday
Fire officials said they expect full containment of the Creek fire, which has scorched more than 15,000 acres east of Sylmar, by the end of the day Saturday. The blaze has been 98% contained since Thursday, with 37 firefighters still working on suppression repair on Saturday morning, officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. Around 1,700 firefighters were involved at the peak of the battle.

Los Angeles Won't Be Selling Weed Jan. 1
California kicks off recreational sales on New Year's Day, becoming the largest state in the nation with legal marijuana. But Los Angeles officials announced Friday that dispensaries in the city won't be part of the celebration. The city won't begin accepting applications to sell legal recreational pot until Jan. 3, and it could take weeks before those businesses are properly licensed with the city and state and open their doors.

L.A. And Its Trash Haulers Are Quarreling Over Customer Bills In The City's New Recycling Program
The honeymoon could soon be over between Los Angeles and the trash companies picked to carry out the city's huge new recycling program. Over the last three months, the city's Bureau of Sanitation and the refuse haulers have been at odds over the hefty new fees showing up on customers' bills — including one being charged when trash truck drivers use a remote control to open a gate.
