The number of violent crimes fell in 2017 compared to the year before in areas patrolled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, with the sharpest decrease seen in homicides, according to preliminary data released Thursday. During a year-end news conference in downtown's Hall of Justice, Sheriff Jim McDonnell attributed the 20.5 percent fall in homicides this year compared to 2016 to efforts by deputies, detectives, community outreach workers, as well as programs that kept gang activity low. In 2016, for example, there were 137 gang-related homicides. So far this year, that number fell to 100, McDonnell said. In all, there were 167 homicide related deaths so far in 2017 compared to last year.
