Rebuking Reforms, San Jose Police Look To Feds To Prosecute Gun Crimes
In what the region's top FBI official said could serve as a model for other agencies, San Jose police are sending more gun crimes to federal court to obtain harsher sentences for violent offenders they say benefit from soft spots created by California's criminal-justice reforms. Under the new approach, believed to be the only one of its kind in the state, San Jose detectives, working with local prosecutors and the FBI, will more routinely consider certain crimes when a gun is used — regardless of whether it's fired — for federal prosecution. At the federal level, mandatory minimum sentences are significantly longer, and served in out-of-state detention facilities. Mercury News

Gun Deaths At Record High Gun deaths are at a record high.

Nearly 40,000 people in the United States died by guns last year, 10,000 more than a decade ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Los Angeles County has seen a similar rise after many years of declines in gun deaths. "The statistics are clear on this -- as gun laws go, so goes gun violence," LAPD Chief Michel Moore said. Despite the strictest gun laws in the nation, California and LA County are not immune from violence and deaths. The I-Team found after nearly 800 gun deaths in 2010 followed by a decline and then an uptick a few years ago, according to data provided by the LA County Department of Public Health. In 2016, 792 people were killed by gunfire. The majority of the deaths over the six year span were men and 26 percent were African-American people. That group only accounts for just about 9 percent of the county's population. NBC 4

City Officials Break Ground On South LA Housing For Homeless Veterans
City officials on Friday broke ground on a $32 million-apartment complex in South Los Angeles for the homeless, with a focus on serving homeless veterans. The complex is located near South Figueroa and Flower streets. The community will offer 57 affordable units in all, 42 specifically for those who have served the country. Officials said it will be a supportive housing community offering more than just a place to sleep. "In the past, we used to serve people on the street, keep them alive, but they weren't indoors where if we got them an apartment. If we didn't give them the mental healthcare they needed, physical healthcare, anti-addiction services, child care, they'd fall back onto the streets, so this is a formula that works," said L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti. ABC 7

Empty Venice Bus Depot Approved By City Council For Temporary Homeless Shelter

The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to turn a vacant Metro bus depot in Venice into a temporary homeless shelter, over the objections of some local residents and community leaders. The site is one of dozens that have been proposed for Mayor Eric Garcetti's "Bridge Home" program, which aims to install temporary shelters in each City Council district. Although most of the sites are under consideration without controversy, the Venice location is one of several in the city that has seen significant opposition. Dozens of people on both sides lined up to speak to the council, with some critics arguing it was too close to homes, schools and businesses. NBC 4
