Another Procession To The Morgue, This Time After 2 Chicago Officers Struck And Killed By Train
A long procession of police cars, blue lights flashing, escorted ambulances carrying the bodies of two Chicago police officers to the morgue early Tuesday, hours after they were struck and killed by a South Shore train while answering a call of shots fired on the Far South Side. As the ambulances turned into the parking lot, they drove under a large American flag hoisted by a firetruck — a scene that played out just a month ago when another Chicago police officer was killed in the line of duty. In the latest tragedy to hit the Police Department, Officers Eduardo Marmolejo, 36, and Conrad Gary, 31, were conducting surveillance after a ShotSpotter sensor picked up gunfire near 103rd Street and Dauphin Avenue around 6:20 p.m., police officials said. North Carolina Officer Dies After Being Hit While Investigating Crash
A Lumberton police officer has died after being struck by a car while investigating a crash on I-95 early Saturday morning. WTVD reported that Officer Jason Quick was responding to a wreck on I-95 Northbound near Exit 22 just after 6 a.m. Officer Quick was hit by a car shortly before 7 a.m., according to authorities. Quick was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center where he died. The North Carolina Highway Patrol and the Investigator for the Robeson County District Attorney's Office are investigating the crash scene. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Officer Jason Quick,” the Lumberton Police Department said on Facebook. Man Shot And Killed Inside Vehicle In Westmont Neighborhood Of South L.A.
A man was found slumped over in his vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds that proved fatal in the Westmont neighborhood of South L.A. late Friday night, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. First responders at the scene near Grand Avenue and West 93rd Street tried to revive the victim around 11:30 p.m. but he died from his wounds, police said. Detectives were canvassing the area in search of evidence and witnesses but no suspect is currently in custody, according to LAPD Lt. Byron Roberts. 42-Year-Old Man Shot, Killed While Changing Tire In North Hollywood
A 42-year-old man was shot and killed while changing his tire in a North Hollywood parking lot Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The man was shot at approximately 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Valley Park Recreation Center on the 12200 block of Archwood Street in North Hollywood. "No one thinks when they pull over into a parking lot to find a safe place to change their tire are going to be accosted and shot," said LAPD Homicide Lt. Michael Kozak. The victim was found shot next to his 1993 Cadillac and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. NBC 4 |

Police: Driver Under The Influence In Woodland Hills Crash That Killed Woman
A woman was killed early Monday after her sedan was T-boned by a pickup truck driven by a man police say was under the influence. The crash happened just before 2 a.m. on Topanga Canyon Boulevard at De La Osa. The woman, believed to be in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the woman was pulling out onto Topanga Canyon from De La Osa when the truck smashed into the silver Honda Fit. The driver was believed to be under the influence of alcohol and marijuana and going 60 mph in a 40 mph zone. The pickup truck driver, who has since been taken into custody, was taken to Woodland Hills Hospital and is expected to recover. CBS 2 |

‘I'm Pleading Insanity,' Suspect In Trader Joe's Shootout Tells Judge
The man charged with holding customers hostage inside a Trader Joe's this summer insisted in court Monday that he was insane at the time of the incident. Gene Evin Atkins — who is accused of engaging in a gun battle with Los Angeles police that ended with the shooting death of a store manager — arrived in a downtown courtroom not only as a criminal defendant but as his own attorney. “I'm pleading insanity,” said Atkins, 28, who faces 51 criminal counts, including murder, attempted murder of a peace officer and kidnapping. Police say that on July 21, Atkins shot his grandmother, kidnapped his girlfriend and fired a gun at police officers from his car during a chase from Hollywood to Silver Lake. Los Angeles Times |

Father Of 4-Year-Old South LA Girl Pleads Not Guilty In Her Death
A South Los Angeles father has pleaded not guilty in the death of his 4-year-old daughter earlier this month. Prosecutors have charged Charles Richard Lee, 23, with one count of assault on a child causing death. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Officials say Lee is responsible for the death of his daughter, Zaraellia Thompson. Paramedics were called to the South LA home Dec 2, where she was found unresponsive in the bathroom with some type of trauma. She was brought to a hospital and later pronounced dead there. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested Lee two days after his daughter's death. ABC 7 |

Illegal Street Racing, Alcohol Blamed In Crash That Injured 4 In Porter Ranch Earlier This Month, LAPD Says
A solo car crash that left four men injured in Porter Ranch earlier this month was the result of drunk driving and an illegal street race with another vehicle, police say. The incident occurred on Tampa Avenue at Nashville Street at about 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 8, said Sgt. Gregory Fuqua, in charge of the Valley Traffic Division's special-enforcement team for the Los Angeles Police Department. The driver of a Mustang GT with three passengers was traveling north on Tampa, south of the 118 Freeway, when he lost control and struck a tree in the center median. LAPD, LAFD Participate In USC Active-Shooter Drill With Simulated Gunfire
USC public safety officials conducted a multi-agency security exercise Monday in the University Park Campus. The exercise took place at McCarthy Quad, Argue Plaza and Fertitta Hall and included participants from USC campus police, the LAPD, the Los Angeles Fire Department and other emergency responders. The drill simulated an active shooter situation, and there were visual and audio effects, including replica weapons, actors with makeup “injuries,” and simulated gunfire. Los Angeles Daily News |

Pasadena Man Gets 13 Years For LAX Drug Trafficking Scheme
A Pasadena man who ran a drug-trafficking ring that used couriers to hide heroin and cocaine in luggage on flights from Los Angeles to Detroit was sentenced Monday to 13 1/2 years in federal prison. Kevin “Wood” Blair, 46, pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine. Prosecutors said Blair was the “organizer or leader” of the scheme, which involved four defendants and began on an unknown date and lasted until law enforcement moved in last year. Napping Firefighter Was Run Over By Civilian Pickup Truck During Woolsey Fire: Cal Fire Report
A firefighter who was run over by a pickup truck during last month's deadly Southern California wildfire was sleeping in an unmarked area but received prompt care for his minor injuries, a new state fire report said. South Kitsap Fire & Rescue Lt. Terry Geiselman, 46, was with a team from Washington state that had arrived to help battle the Woolsey Fire that ripped through communities west of Los Angeles from Ventura County southward to Malibu. The fire that began on Nov. 8 burned 1,500 homes and other buildings and killed three people. Geiselman, of Gig Harbor, was identified by his local fire department after the accident. KTLA 5 |

Woolsey Fire Deadline Extended To Sign Up For LA County's Free Fire Debris Removal Program
Los Angeles County announced Sunday that it was extending the deadline for residents affected by the Woolsey Fire to sign up for the county's free Fire Debris Removal Program to Jan. 28, 2019. Phase I of the Woolsey Fire debris removal process is hazardous material inspection and removal, and no forms and no appointments are necessary for the free service. Officials will tag homes red or yellow if the home threatens public health. Officials will post a yellow clearance placard on the property to indicate that it is safe from hazardous materials. Sun Valley Canyons Get Traffic Safety Changes, Bike Lanes Installed On Popular Road
Traffic safety measures and bike lanes have been installed along La Tuna Canyon Road in the northeast San Fernando Valley where residents have long complained of speeding motorists. The announcement of the improvements on several miles of road running through Sun Valley, Shadow Hills and Tujunga came more than a year after bicyclist, Keith Jackson, was seriously injured in a hit-and-run collision on the street. Jackson was at an event Friday to unveil the changes. “I am thankful to be here and glad to see all of the changes on La Tuna Canyon Road to make it safer for the pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and equestrians,” he said.
