Kansas Officer Shot With Own Gun, Suspect Killed
Two Kansas City officers were hurt late Sunday responding to an indecent exposure call that ended with one of the officers shooting and killing the suspect. It happened around 11 p.m. near North 18th Street and Orville Avenue. As of 6 a.m., that intersection was still shut down. According to police, responding officers found the suspect and began talking with them. During that conversation there was a struggle between one of the officers and the suspect. DTLA Residents On Edge After Attacks Near Red Line Station
People in downtown LA were on high alert Thursday night after two violent and unprovoked attacks in two weeks. On Wednesday a 14-year-old boy was shoved off of the platform at the Pershing Square Metro station by a man police say may have been homeless. “That could have been my husband. That could have been me,” said Sara Hernandez, co-founder of DTLA Strong. “It was extremely chaotic. It was very distressing. People were just trying to get him off he tracks because a train was coming. People were just trying to find law enforcement. Stressful situation,” said Marcus Lovingood, a witness to the incident. Good Samaritans pulled the boy to safety just in time. The suspect ran and moments later fought with a construction worker nearby. While police were arresting him the man had a medical emergency and died. CBS 2

Brown Sues To Save California Sentencing Laws
Outgoing Gov. Jerry Brown sued Thursday to protect one of his signature actions in office, a voter-approved measure that allows most prison inmates to seek earlier release and participate in rehabilitation programs. His administration filed a lawsuit challenging a pending 2020 initiative that seeks to toughen criminal penalties as part of an effort to roll back reforms adopted by voters within the past decade. Brown's lawsuit in Sacramento County Superior Court contends the measure lacked enough valid signatures to overturn a previously approved constitutional amendment. Associated Press

California Will Soon Require More DUI Offenders To Pass A Breathalyzer Test Before Starting Their Car
More Californians convicted of DUI offenses will be required to pass a breathalyzer test to start their vehicles under a new law going into effect Jan. 1. SB 1046 by State Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, expands a pilot program already in place in Sacramento, Alameda, Tulare and Los Angeles counties to the entire state. The bill received unanimous approval in the Legislature. It requires drivers convicted of first-time DUI offenses that lead to an injury to pass a breathalyzer connected to their vehicle, called an ignition interlock device or IID, each time they start their car for six months. The devices also require random tests while in motion, to prevent the driver from drinking after they've passed the first test. Repeat DUI offenders must install the devices for a year or longer. Senate Unanimously Approves Bill To Make Lynching
A Federal Hate Crime After nearly 100 years of failed attempts, the Senate on Wednesday unanimously approved legislation to make lynching a federal crime. Sponsored by the Senate's three African American members, Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.), the bill would ensure that lynching triggers an enhanced sentence under federal law like other hate crimes. “This has been a long arc, a painful history and a shameful history in this body,” Booker, who has been mentioned as a possible 2020 presidential candidate, said on the Senate floor. “At the height of lynchings across this country affecting thousands of people, this body did not act to make that a federal crime. .?.?. At least now, the United States Senate has now acted. One hundred senators, no objections.” Washington Post
