Man injured in officer-involved shooting in Encino was armed with knife, replica handgun, LAPD says
An hours-long standoff that led to an officer-involved shooting with a man who may have been holding a fake gun in Encino late Saturday prompted streets closures, evacuations of nearby residents and a response from a Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team, officials said. The shooting occurred in the 5200 block of Shoshone Avenue at around 9:20 p.m., said Officer Mike Lopez, an LAPD spokesman. That's where LAPD officers on patrol encountered the man, who they said was armed with a knife. When they approached him, the officers said he pulled out what looked like a handgun. Shots were fired and the man fled into a nearby neighborhood, police said. Lopez did not say who fired the shots, or whether they were fired by officers. Detectives later determined that the gun was a replica. Both the gun and the knife were found near the scene of the shooting, Lopez said. Los Angeles Daily News

Weeks after the Thousand Oaks shooting, country bar's regulars reunite for a two-step and that old Borderline warmth
Borderline Bar and Grill was a place you could go to dance away your worries. Even after what happened there last month, regulars still wanted to do that together — so they met up and danced in parking lots, in backyards, in a barn, at the mall. On Thursday, more than a thousand people — including many survivors and parents of some victims — gathered in their cowboy boots for the first night of line dancing Hynes had organized since his bar closed. The event was held eight miles east in Agoura Hills, in a bar called The Canyon. But as the music played and the room filled, many felt the old Borderline warmth. Los Angeles Times

Lines Drawn in Fight Over Historic Unsealing of Police Records
When a landmark police transparency law was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in September, civil liberties groups and advocates hailed the victory, citing a history of previous failed attempts to bring light to California's entrenched secrecy around police misconduct and use of force. But the new law may turn out to be just part of a longer legal war. The next battle, over whether Senate Bill 1421 applies to past or only future misconduct, has already started — even before the law takes effect on Jan. 1. Attorneys representing police unions throughout the state filed a petition with the California Supreme Court on Tuesday, asking for an order or other "extraordinary relief" before New Year's Day to block police agencies throughout the state from turning over any existing records. Gov. Jerry Brown sets record for pardons, commutations in California
When Jerry Brown was governor from 1975 to 1983, he pardoned 404 convicted criminals, removing the convictions from their records, and granted one commutation, shortening a prisoner's sentence. But during his past eight years in office, he has granted 1,189 pardons and 152 commutations, far more than any other governor in modern California history. “The atmosphere, the gangs, the hopelessness, sentences that are so long ... the no-exit attitude has made it virtually impossible to have any strong rehabilitative atmosphere,” Brown said in an interview. “This has given me the interest, where I can, in instilling hope.” San Francisco Chronicle

Camp fire survivors trickle back into Paradise and surrounding communities. Some never left
For more than a month after the wildfire, Matt Miller and his wife slept on an air mattress at a friend's house in the small town of Durham, west of Paradise. The evacuees shared the home with their displaced elderly neighbors, who also fled the Camp fire's flames on Nov. 8. As the days dragged into weeks, the Millers weren't sure what they'd find when they finally went back home to Paradise. Last Saturday, the couple returned to their home off Neal Road. There's some property damage and the gas hasn't been turned on yet, but they are happy to be back. Los Angeles Times
